Nice trick! I've been in a similar jam and I melted a few drops of Babbitt into the socket. It's soft enough to allow you to conform to the spark plug but hard enough that it will twist it out without stripping

My spark plug shell came out (part with the hex) but the plug is still in the hole. 5.4. How do I take it out?
@michaelszczys83164 ай бұрын
Just did one of these that was a flat gasket type plug with a lot of torque against the head but not jammed on the threads. I was lucky in that the porcelain all came out. I used a part of a cigarette filter to plug the hole so chips would stay out of the cylinder and drilled the head part off so that it released the tightness and used easy-out to get the threaded part.

Interesting solution. I will have to keep it in mind if I ever need it down the road. Just curious, what brand socket was that?
@smalltownmachineshop68602 жыл бұрын
It was a craftsman, I have tons of them from auctions and such, cheaper sockets would work to but iv had them split sometimes doing this, the craftsman’s never do. Never a proponent of tool abuse but it works when you really need to get a plug out
@bane64867 ай бұрын
Just had this exact situation happen on my Mercedes. Shop tightened the spark plug so hard the hex nut was almost as round as a ring. Took a smaller socket, heated it, and tapped it on with a hammer, let it cool and now it’s out! You are a legend for this video and saved me so much money.

This would have been my last choice but I got a deep well bolt extractor kit but only needed the one in 5/8 and it worked ridiculously well. I seriously popped the plug loose so easily that I wasn’t quite sure at first if it was even loose. I ordered a set of “Irwin” brand ones from Amazon but they were delayed so I went to the local auto parts shop and got a “Die Hard” brand kit
@smalltownmachineshop6860 Жыл бұрын
Yes this is for sure a last ditch effort way to get them out, I’ll have to check out that kit you described

Just wondering where you are located? 05 ford f150 5.4, exact same plug hole. The only part of spark plug remaining in hole is the very bottom. The lisle extractor is not grabbing the electrode. Suggestions please!!!

It should push the electrode down a bit and bite into the metal body of the plug

I have the straight 6 on the 04 Envoy and it was hard to get that back spark plug out and I finally got it after a couple hours But when i got it out a couple pieces of the porcelain was broke off which I hope I got all them out. But after getting the new plug in I can't get the sparkplug socket out. Any ideas? It feels like the tip of the sparkplug is to far up which the extension hits the tip so it dont connect with the socket. Any ideas on how to get the socket out? Also when i pulled the old plug out it had a black rubber piece on the stem of the plug. It looks like it could be a section of the rubber piece thats in the socket

Oh man. I have a socket tip end that stuck in the hole. I’m trying glue over night. I grabbed the wrong socket. Tips on removing the stuck socket. I think it’s wedged. I don’t have an impact wrench. I’ll try hammer and glue in the morning. Thanks.

@smalltownmachineshop686011 ай бұрын
I would find a way to remove the oil first like like shoving absorbent paper towels down there first and Mayby follow up with some cleaner after a majority of the oil is out. You want to remove as much flammable liquid as possible before trying this technique

some of my plugs came out with 5/8 socket, but then I got to the ones that looked older. I broke off the tip with needle nose pliers. I think ill try the 9/16 to see if it works.

Did you just say SPARK PLUG and IMPACT WRENCH in the same sentence?!! I have torture devices in my backyard just for idiots who use impacts on spark plugs. Whoever is practicing this technique needs to be drawn in quartered. Cannot tell you how many engines have been nearly ruined because someone needed to take a impact to a spark plug. I have been servicing cars for over 20 years and have never seen a spark plug come shooting out of the cylinder, so no idea why folks use impacts on plugs.
