What does mental illness have anything to do with how someone is raised. Those two things are completely unrelated. Look up “mental illness”
@ShilohJulia

I know we can’t always blame parents for the actions of their children, but TWO murderers for sons?! I definitely think Austin had severe mental health issues combined with substance abuse. He should not have been let out on bail. The older brother, may not have shown as overt of signs, but was also clearly mentally unwell.

if its mental illness you really can't blame the family... mental illness can happen to anyone. they even tried to get help for the other one but it seemed like it wasn't helping at all. they did as much as they could. if anyone is to blame its the police for letting austin run about. he only got a restraining order and 30 days in a mental hospital for SIX charges. that does absolutely nothing.

I agree, the moment I heard Matthew got involved I felt like the parents for sure antagonized the neighbors instead of putting responsibility on their son. It’s a big leap for him to blame the neighbors even if he did have undiagnosed mental health issues too, sadly I have seen many families that become defensive even if they swear they’ll get their family member help.

Best advice I can give as a realtor, door knock in the neighborhood , visit at diff times of day and random days. Search for offenders , crime rate in neighborhood , crimes by address. If there’s schools near by, talk to anyone in the office as well to get a feel for the area. Neighbors were a deal breaker for a home I wanted to purchase earlier this year.

Or maybe attacking police officers breaking one of there jaw should get him more than 2 F'N weeks in jail and that's it!! Try and deny it but him being a mentally ill white man in a middle class neighborhood is why he got no time. People on here say shooting a black man in the back was justified because he ran away. I NEVER seen a black guy get 2 weeks for attacking a cop. That doesn't happen. Pretending it doesn't exist doesn't make it go away.

A couple things I wanted to add - there actually is another Lanz child, a daughter who is older than the two brothers. Her name is Alexandra and there’s obviously not much of her online except her LinkedIn. I’m pretty sure she moved out of the home to Atlanta in 2018 and got married, so I don’t think she was around when any of these things happened. The house where this happened was originally owned by Phillip’s grandparents since it had been built, and Phillip’s sister Michelle was the realtor who sold their grandparents’ house to Justin and Amber. The grandparents still owned the house, but were no longer living there, when Phillip and Eliza moved in. I am not really close with the Brents (just have a lot of mutual friends), but from what I know I truly don’t think they thought to alert Justin or Amber to the history of the house because all of the issues were with Austin, who was no longer part of the equation by the time the Hicks family bought the home. I was shocked to see this story come up on your channel, I love your videos and how you describe events and you did such a great job covering this! Edited to add my sources - I’ve known the Wells family for years and have a lot of mutual friends with the Brents. Im not really close with any of them, but used to attend church with them in the past. My best friend’s sister worked as an audiologist in the same office as Amber, and I also have mutual friends with her. She was unanimously known as a truly sweet, caring individual and you did a great job highlighting how honestly good hearted Justin and Amber Hicks were.

As somebody who suffers from psychosis and has had homicidal ideation in the past I do think if he actually went to a facility and got treatment - possibly meds (they worked wonders for me honestly) - that officer wouldn't have lost his life. Austin was scared and likely felt cornered and all he needed was somebody to push him towards reality. It would have likely saved both the original couple from torment and that officer's life. For Matthew, all I have to say is mental illness is usually a seed planted by genetics and watered by circumstance. The loss of his brother may have set something off. Hopefully the trial was postponed for further psychiatric evaluation and we'll learn more after it all goes down. This obviously doesn't excuse either of their actions and they both need/needed to face consequences, a lot of lives could have been saved had Austin gotten help before it escalated. If he was displaying signs of psychosis he should have been taken for a psych eval before he even looked through his neighbors' windows. He was obviously not in a mental state to be responsible for his choices so somebody should have stepped in for him before anyone else even got involved.

It's so unbelievable that both the authorities and the parents of these sons didn't do more. This didn't need to happen. While an ill-equipped mental healthcare system and mental illness stigma certainly played a role here, it's inexplicable that Austin was allowed out on bond _and_ that his family continued to tolerate his behaviour. Both Austin and Michael would have been showing signs of ill-health and violent tendencies for MONTHS if not years prior to the incident.

you must not know how incredinbly hard it is for families in this country to get help for children or family members with severe mental illness, that is why their as so many homeless people. because hospitals will only keep them a certain amount of time before placing them back into the families hands. and families aren't eqquiped to deal with an adult with severe mental illness. may you never know what it feels like to have a family member with severee mental illness, who refuses to get help and take medicine. then you will see how little you can do.

You can't parent away psychosis. The parents should have gotten him the treatment he needed before he even started looking through his neighbors' windows. It should have been enforced. I don't think he was innocent by any means but he was obviously in no position to be considered responsible for his actions and the people living with him should have noticed that and made some.

My suspicion is that something extremely wrong happen in that family in order to push 2 of the siblings tray and even accomplish horrendous murders. Also, there might be a case of MH history on the family. I really struggle to understand why anyone would intentionally harm others. I do struggle with clinical depression and mixed anxiety myself, on top of a couple of other hidden disabilities, and I have been a victim of all kinds of child abuse and torture for around 20 years. Still, I could never hurt a human being, not even my abusers, never mind random strangers. These brothers were both very ill/ sick, and I feel that with the right help these tragedies could have been prevented. My heart goes to the families and their loved ones, and possibly the loved ones of the murderers and even themselves. I fail to understand how a regular person would be capable of inflicting such pain on anyone, for whatever reason. Being hurt deeply and tortured for over 20 years, I can deeply sympathise with abuse victims, but I would never lash out at my tormentors, even less to innocent strangers

How do you have two children grow up and murder people? The parents obviously didn’t teach them to forgive and love people. This is all about vengeance and a lot of anger.

Bad parenting doesn’t make a murder .. if you already have it in you to kill that your parents not teaching you forgiveness “makes you a killer” ….you were already a killer at heart .
