It makes me really happy to see the parents not stick up for their child for once. I’m glad they apologized to the families and made it clear that they wouldn’t let him be favorited.

My aunt was dating a guy with schizophrenia and yeah, when he was on his meds, he was fine. But then he would decide he didn't need them any more and quit taking them and start acting out again. He would do things like throw all my aunts belongings in the dumpster for no reason or go to church with my grandparents and growl at people. So how does anyone know that Matthew is going to continue to take his meds if he is released? Is there going to be someone who monitors him every day b/c if not, he needs to stay where he is.

I think you should start linking sources in the description where we could possibly donate to the families who have lost their loved ones in these tragic incidents, gone missing, etc. I think it would be very helpful for them!! love your videos Hailey

It's fucking weird seeing True Crime videos about people you actually knew. Most of this shit is in America and I can detach from it but I had mutual friends with Josh (danced with him a few times at parties) and went to school with Zack. The fuck. This whole thing still doesn't feel like it actually happened.

Thank you SO much for calling out the bs. YES, this person may not have been able to discern right from wrong, but 5 people still tragically died. The fact that he is given so much credit when lives could be at stake if he even thinks about stepping off of his meds it’s mind blowing.

My brother can not skip medication in 1day, he'd relapse and will kill me and everyone else, it started when he was 21yo and he is now 45 yo. He is a very loving and helpful brother and son. He did not get narried and he was just helping around the house and help me with chores that I have no time of doing anymore. Like gardening the entire 800sqm backyard that I bought, planting veggies and raising goats and chickens. He needs supervision with taking meds coz they have this tendency to notbyake it and when this happens I panic ... we're in the philippines. btw. Thank you

I’m diagnosed with schizophrenia and have researched it a bunch. If you kill someone, even if you have schizophrenia or anything else, I genuinely believe you should not be allowed out of professional supervision, best case in a facility or group home. You should be held accountable for what you did no matter what one way or another as well. If that’s what you’re capable of off your meds, you need to have someone make sure you are taking your medication, WATCHING you take it and checking after you didn’t hide it under your tongue or something. Also, keep in mind the average age of onset for schizophrenia is around 18, and can hit you like a truck out of nowhere with nothing but maybe a history of depression and mood swings. Psychosis also usually doesn’t just hit and last for a few hours then go away, it’s more like it lessens or worsens at times, and it can be made a lot worse in response to stress. Though it IS possible, I don’t believe it’s the norm for people like me unless some severe stress or anxiety hit you at that time. It’s entirely possible for him to have been in psychosis even earlier and not premeditated in a sane mind, or it could have been even going on for weeks unnoticed until that night. Schizophrenia can go undiagnosed very easily because it can be easily masked or just passed off as someone being a bit odd, my parents had no idea and I had been hearing and seeing things (on a lesser scale until it really hit me years later) as young as kindergarten from what I remember, but I thought it was normal because I wasn’t necessarily “hearing voices” like you see depicted in media. It was more like stuff most people would say is paranormal or explain away as ghosts. Whispers, someone calling your name when no one is there, shadows in the corner of your eyes etc. Also just want to note that people with schizophrenia are statistically more likely to be victims than perpetrators. We’re more likely more scared of others than anything. TLDR schizophrenia is not what the media says, if you kill someone in psychosis you shouldn’t be allowed unsupervised, GIVE THERAPY AND BETTER TREATMENT TO VICTIMS WTF IS WRONG WITH THE COURT like shit yeah we need help but if you hurt someone THEY NEED IT MORE. Just like with the Tim McLean case,, I think these guys should get help but not ever be out in society. Supervised city trips, I'm here for it. Complete freedom?? Wtf? Look, if I ever have some kind of psychotic break where I MURDER someone, I don't need to ever walk the streets alone again. Prison is too harsh, it's not like people can control if they have a breakdown or not but that's exactly why they shouldnt be walking the streets. What if they forget or neglect to take their medicine?? The public is at risk

Was going through some Reddit threads at r/Calgary and it’s really sad how all the victims (and even the perpetrator) were described to be genuinely kind people who were liked by everyone. I can’t even begin to fathom what it was like to not only lose your friends but find out their murderer was also someone close to you and who you’d never suspect. Five people died that day but for some they lost six and I can’t imagine how confusing and difficult those feelings are.

As a schizophrenic this is my biggest fear. Going into a psychotic episode and I’m not aware of reality. I’ve had two before I knew what was happening and it all seemed too real

I was attending the University of Calgary at the time and grew up in Calgary. The part where you were explaining how the parents of the victims found out and the aftermath of the massacre gave me goosebumps because these are people in my community and it just hits so close to home.

wow. after hailey's description of the victims, i was very touched and went to google them and how their families are doing. i started sobbing a lot, especially after a few specific sentences from Marlene Hong (Lawrence Hong's mother) when she was doing a press conference. i just felt this immense grief and sadness for these people i never met. i can't imagine what the families went through, and what they are still going through. i appreciate and respect hailey immensely by starting off with describing the victims, and how they lived. it is so many times better than focusing solely on the killer. these 5 people were real, breathing humans with wonderful futures, with real families who were torn apart after the incident. it is just so upsetting. i pray for the families healing processes.

Been watching hailey’s videos consistently for a long time now and im so happy for her success because she is truly one of the best true crime youtubers!! She doesn’t glorify the killer, she glorifies how great each individual victim was!

Matthew should definitely be monitored for the rest of his life to ensure he takes his medication. And also whilst yes it would have been ideal if his parents had gotten him help this is actually really difficult to do if the person isn't willing. You can't force someone into treatment unless they've harmed someone or themselves. And it isn't easy to tell whether someone suffering psychosis is a danger either. The murders are tragic.

I feel like his parents definitely would have known something was wrong. I’ve had two psychotic episodes and you don’t just get this crazy all at once. It takes time for delusions like this to develop. Possibly a case of the big boss cop not wanting a kid in therapy. It’s terribly sad that he did not get help BEFORE lives were taken.

And didn't they check his web browsing history and emails to figure out what order he was following?

The way you explain these tragic situations really helps get the info out there without completely traumatizing your audience, giving us the chance to learn and do our best to seek justice for those immediately impacted. Personally I think if you are considered not guilty due to reasons of insanity you shouldn’t be given the opportunity to get out at all. A murder is a murder. And I understand mental illness is a big factor but his parents or ANYONE should of been able to notice some signs. We can’t keep letting innocent people pay the consequences and end up dead because these people aren’t seeking help ahead of time so things like this don’t happen.

I went to highschool with some of the victims family members. There was a large belief he was given leniency because of who his dad was, even though his dad showed public disgrace and shame. I want to believe it was just a case of negligent parents not paying attention to his mental & other issues and/or a psychotic break.. however it's hard to not feel his being released into a group home as of 2021 after brutally killing FIVE WHOLE PEOPLE is a case of privilege, being coached by an expensive and talented legal team, and another example of the weakness/breakdown in the Canadian Justice System. 😞

this literally happened in my hometown. he went to uni with my cousin. i remember hearing ab this on the news. the vibe in the room changes and i swear you get chills any time matthew degrood or the case is brought up in calgary. there’s still so much outrage over this case with the mental health claims and his parole situation. everytime i hear about the details of this case it brings me to tears but thank you for covering such an important case to the YYC community.

This is such an interesting topic especially taking the focus on rehabilitation for inmates and those who have committed major crimes. While it could be considered social change, which it should be important for governing bodies to focus on a rehabilitation for inmates, it is also important to consider the circumstances. While he may have been in a manic psychosis episode there’s no way to really assess his capacity to be compliant once released. Living in a group home there is only so much that staff can do but also who is to say the capacity for him to be rehabilitated isn’t there? I think more research and better understanding for these topics is really needed before decisions can be made. I would likely think that he would need immense monitoring due to the nature of his crime and how severe it was. He may be medicated and doing well but he is also mandated to do so while living in a mental institution. I appreciate your content so much Hailey!! Love the thought provoking questions at the end especially for tough cases such as this
