Hey, that's right in the time when I worked the engine room on GW. During work-ups in late 1993, we had an idiot LCDR who was standing EOOW. During flight ops, we had a very minor reactor plant casualty, the EOOW ordered the wrong corrective actions, and it caused both reactors to shut down. We went dead-in-the-water, planes already airborne had to divert to Oceana, and we had a 4-star admiral aboard who was PISSED. Our ship got a standing order to not let him stand EOOW anymore and his career was in the doghouse after that. He was dreaming of being a ship captain and he wound up getting out without even making CDR. I think it's funny (funny what happened to him, the interruption of ops was not funny), that guy was an asshole.

Which carrier? My Uncle served on the Forrestal and I was fortunate enough to serve on the Stennis that utilizes the Forrestal anchors.

Ill agree, except for that last bit. With todays tech the pilot can be more of a pilot, and the plane can be more of a plane. I get what you're saying though, its like comparing the Tesla breaking the world record on the Nürburgring while barely breaking a sweat, to an Isle of Man rider running on sheer instinct, hard mechanical feedback, and the very real and visceral threat of instant death.

I did 2 cruises with Connie (cv-64) V1 division. Nothing beats the tomcat. The noise was always distinct. Completely different from the rest of them. Love to see afterburners at dusk!

It wasn't that the TF30 was a bad engine it's that the Tomcat wasn't designed to work well with it and the bad intake design would create compressor stalls consistantly

i heard that the old engines were far superior engines at high speed high altitude though

Man that F14 spit so much hydraulic fluid and a headache to maintain. But man was she one deadly kick ass plane. Day/night, long range, all weather and can carry so much weaponry it could outfight anything in its day.

Just because one does not serve in the military does not make one less patriotic. There are many great working class Americans that never served who provide the raw materials and food to make all the equipment the military uses. From the oil fields to the mines and farmer's fields, etc., etc ... there wouldn't be much of a military without these fine people.

I agree. I was with VF-41 from 70-74 aboard the USS FDR (CVA-42) and I spent every free minute I had on the 07 level watching air ops. I was not remotely qualified to be a Naval aviator but my heart and soul was always with them and it still is.

I hate getting on the roof of my house, and even when I watch somebody on tv in a high place I can feel it in my stomach. What's really weird is I do have a pilot's license and I go out twice a month and do aerobatics in my Cessna 152 aerobat. For some reason flying my airplane doesn't bother me but flying in a commercial airline scares the crap out of me.

When I get on a commercial plane, me and a couple hundred others are walking into an aluminum tube with wings without vetting the pilots or knowing the maintenance history of the aircraft. Although the statistics on crashing in a plane are low. I am sure the thousands that have died in plane crashes were counting on those same statistics as they boarded their flight.

Gary Grandy that's one of the two main reasons they were retired. The sheer amount of deck space needed was pushing the size of the carriers into an untenable size and cost. Then there was the whole matter of increasing cost of maintenance per flight hour. Upgrading the platform in a similar way that the F-15 received would have been prohibitive. They were better off starting with a clean sheet of paper. They were damned pretty birds though. Awesome.

@B 132 The matter of reduced RCS has been a bit of a sacred cow in a way. Designers seemed to need to pay homage to the idea rather than actually execute it in a large way. The goalposts were stretched a bit as I understand for what began as the JSF project which politically morphed into the current F-35. RCS was addressed mainly in the forward track of the airframe and that was supposedly enough to deliver the first-shoot-first-kill advantage. Fads in the MIC for airframe design concepts are very expensive when they carry over too far into areas where they may not be best suited. The old Soviet bureaus were apparently tasked to explore specific concepts for small batches of aircraft with no loss of political cred in their system it seems. Of course in a competitive profit based environment, everyone wants to crank out 3000+ units of any airframe they invest years and billion developing no matter how stupid the white elephant might become. I loved the F-35 as a proof of concept but I don't (didn't) want to pay to put it into full production in multiple roles and tasks at such a ridiculous extravagance by stretching goalposts and redefining mission parameters to suit that product and nothing else where needed. Another F-35A jet was just lost in the desert days ago during an aerial probe & drogue (daytime) refueling exercise. The KC-130 tanker captain was able to get his bird down on one and a half remaining engines but there's no such option for the combat fighter - they had to punch out. Everybody is alive thankfully. Imagine how many times the Naval version will struggle with the refueling process in the pitch dark of night over rough seas while awaiting a landing slot on the lone carrier deck for a thousand miles. I curse the string of political and biased business decisions that got us there over the decades.
