Thank you for the great review sir! You should do more i think :) - The only thing that i like when review tripods, and most reviewers seem to forget this, is to show somewhat of the stability of them ... at the end it is one of the most important things about a tripod i find. Again great video, thanks for sharing !

at the moment I'm torn between the Mountaineer and the Traveller tripod you showed briefly. I have a Fuji X-T2 on preorder and I can't decide which of the two will be most suitable. I think I'd like the Mountaineer for extra rigidity and support but wonder if it's overkill for the Fuji. And even within the Traveller range, debating between series 1 and 2. I'd like it to be light enough to carry around but not at the expense of rigidity. Unfortunately there aren't any local stores I can go to try them out.
@Speedster2707
@Speedster2707 8 жыл бұрын
So you have to look at the weight specs of your gear, Shakleel. The X-T2 (body only) weighs just over a pound. The Fuji 18-55 lens (as an example) weighs just over 1/2 pound. So now you're looking at about 2 pounds on the tripod, and then include the weight of the type of tripod head you will attach to that. I'm sure that will come WELL under the 22 pound load limit of the Series 1 Traveler. Even with some heftier lenses, you should still be good w/the Series 1. Where it could potentially (and still probably not in this circumstance) become a problem, is in windy conditions. In which case you could attach the weight of a camera bag or similar item to the tripod to help steady it. The Traveler Series 1 is a well made tripod. Feel secure in the fact that it can handle the load. If you still are unsure and are willing to pay return shipping for one of the tripods, order both Travelers from a reputable company. Check them both out, and ship back the one you don't want. ; )

Thank you so much. That makes so much sense. I think I'll order one of the two Traveler series from a reputable dealer and return it for the other if it doesn't suit. Thanks again, much appreciated.

+Speedster2707 just to let you know. I eventually ended up getting the Gitzo Traveler series 2 with the 82QD ball head. Expensive but superb quality and seems like a happy medium between the mountaineer and Traveler series 1. Very happy with it.

Thanks so much for an excellent tripod comparison. I have been thinking of purchasing the Gitzo and your review has helped me make up my mind. It may cost a lot more but in the end probably worth it. I need something that will last, I’m tired of tripods that won’t stand up to serious use.

April 3 2017 Thanks for the video. I went through so many tripods wasting my money for the last few years thinking I could save money this way. I was wrong. I now own the Gitzo GT3542L which is made in Italy. I think you mentioned Germany in your video.I had so many issues with my “RIP” Induro which is the brother company to Benro. Benro is actually a better choice for those who want to keep buying tripods every year or so. Cheaper and made better in my opinion. My Induro lasted me a year and a half. The Carbon Fiber or otherwise isn’t the criteria here, it’s their build quality which is not good in my opinion.All the following issues started after a year of getting the Induro:. Every few hours or so while pushing my ThinkTank Roller with Induro attached to the side, one or two of the lowest knobs get loosened and the legs get rubbing against the ground stopping my from pushing the roller. Knobs on most of the sections in Induro kept on loosening and never held the legs folded. . Or the opposite, sometimes the knobs were so tight I couldn’t open them easily which caused the threading to be stripped. The legs weren’t bent since I am careful not to bang my tripods or carrying my gear mounted on it while walking. Careful to measure the weight of my gear for the specific tripod. . One of the mid-size knobs moved past it’s own section and got stuck at an angle/slanted on the threading of the smaller knob on the lower section. It’s funny that just as one knob got stuck while my biggest wrench couldn’t loosen it, the other knobs started acting weird and 6 out of 9 of them are completely loosened and don’t tighten anymore. I kept on switching the sleeves and knobs from one leg to another but it was only good for a short period. Induro has foams on all the legs which made it more comfortable in the cold and heat. Many Benro tripods excluding the travel series have a very good feature that Induro doesn’t have: Having three threaded socket on the center head base for my leveling base. My ReallyRightStuff leveling base kept on loosening every time I locked it on Induro. In short, you initially spend a lot on Gitzo but you won’t regret it.

Thanks for the compliment JimsTVEU. You are correct. It's nice to get some sort of stability shot for these tripods. I don't do this sort of thing and it was actually shot with just an iPhone. I think to get a shot like that, it would be best to move in for a closer shot while stressing the legs a bit. I was also a little worried about going too long. I kind of did a non-scientific stability test prior to recording the video and took those observations into mind when commenting on the tripods.

Thanks for sharing, I think that one very important test is to knock the legs when extended and see how long takes the vibration to die. The one that is more resistant to vibration is the best.

Yes. I've used that test before in the store when comparing. You also have to take into consideration other factors (weight, etc...).

Hi Speedster2707, Nice comparison video! Just FYI, I recently came across a unique and extremely high-quality travel tripod...the FLM "CP26 Travel Tripod". It has super-strong 10x Carbon Fiber legs (26 lb load capacity!) with well-made twist locks, and a ball head that has several unique features that I've not seen in my 35 years of photography using tripods...For example, the "Pan" function permits butter-smooth normal panning, but in addition, adds a 15-degree ratchet function that is fantastic for us landscape/panorama photographers! There is also a "Tilt" knob that locks the ball head so that only one vertical/up/down plane is available. And finally, there is a "lock" function that locks the ball head from panning/turning, so that it can easily be unscrewed and/or mounted solidly. The kit comes with very well-made screw-on metal spikes, and folds up to a compact 15.75" for travel. Quite ingenious and precision design overall, and highly recommended for travel!! Bottom line: This FLM tripod simply exudes Quality. FLM-Canada supplies the US. Thank you, and Happy Shooting!

I had 4 Gitzo and still have two of them. I spend a lot time in the Ocean shooting on the beach and the seal of the legs is very important to keep sand out. I will probably buy a new Gitzo for that reason but I have to say their warranty and customer service absolutely sucks. In one of my Gitzo a leg came undone where it goes into the joint at the head. I could have glued it back in but decided to send it to Gitzo to do it right. I figured they would do it for free. They glued it, like I would have, and 6 weeks later they sent it back with a charge of $150!
@Speedster2707
@Speedster2707 6 жыл бұрын
Wow. That's a lot of perfect, scientifically placed glue! LOL! Yeah, I probably would have put some JB Weld on the joint/leg and been done with it. Once any camera equipment is out of warranty and you send it in, stand by...

I use a Really Right Stuff BH40 ball head. I see most people with the, larger, BH 55, but my 40 holds my 1dx MK II and a 70-200, 2.8 well and it allows me to shave the weight a bit with the smaller ball head.

AS AN UPDATE... I just spent two weeks of intense photography in S. Utah and N. Arizona with the Gitzo. I found that I was setting up my tripod very quickly, using it, and taking it down to move to a different location...several times. I shot about 1600 images total. Most w/a tripod. Half with the GT2532 and half with my traveler. The traveler was great for hiking (Zion's, Angel's Landing!). The GT2532 was a great sturdy tripod, even in some of the gusty, windy enviornments. The only thing I didn't like was that I really had to crank the legs down to get them to stay, w/o sliding up.. Every once in a while, in my haste, I wouldn't tighten them down all the way and they start to slide up. I kinda wish the threads were larger so they would lock faster, with less turns. If you take your time a bit more with your set-up, this shouldn't be a problem. The only other problem I had was when I was in a slot canyons in AZ. I guess I had been using the heck out of the tripod and the quick release collar for the center column slowly came loose. The center column eventually dropped out. It wasn't a big deal. I just had to put it back in, and that took a minute. That just caused me to check to make sure the collar was tight now and then. The tripod is made to drop the center column for super low shots. My wife uses the CLT 203. She did not take it on the trip. She just took her Traveler. It worked well for her but she suffered in the wind. (Canon 7D MK II, mostly a 10-22 lens). She actually put her 100-400 on that thing for some close ups and it worked out (w/2 sec timer). She has reported that she likes the CLT 203 and has no issues with it.

Hi, I can´t decide weather to get the series two traveler or the series two mountaineer.I do a lot of hiking and seascape photography , that means getting into the water too ;), I am mor inclined towards the traveler because of the weight but not sure if I will make a huge mistake....What do you think about the hight and I can see the traveler hasn't got three levels to move the legs, is that an issue?Thanks a lot for your video!
@Speedster2707
@Speedster2707 7 жыл бұрын
Tough one to answer. It depends...on several factors. One is the weight of your gear. If you have a heavy backpack, then the traveler. If it's lighter, then do the Mountaineer. It's not that much heavier than the traveler and is more stable, especially in windy seascapes. (If you dunk either tripod past the first leg joint in salt water, you MUST take apart the legs and rinse them out as soon as possible to avoid corrosion.) What kind of lens do you normally use? Wildlife takes bigger lenses, hence, the Mountaineer. Landscapes generally use smaller, lighter lenses, so you can get away w/the Traveler. How far is "hiking"? A mile or less? Use the Mountaineer. If you are doing real backpacking, use the Traveler; again, taking into consideration the total weight of your gear. The hight shouldn't be too much of an issue. If you have to extend the center column, the Mountaineer wins out here. I took the traveler up Angel's Landing in Zion because of the technical difficulty of the climb and it was a bit of a hike. I am heading to Alaska in July and my hikes will be short, so I will leave the traveler at home. For me, I always opt for the bigger tripod and sometimes suffer the consequences as a result, but I always keep in mind that my main goal is to get the best shot I can get, not be as comfortable as I can be. Hope this helped you.
@Elizabeth-ev6ep

Thanks for your answer, our hiking trips are about 10 to 20 km...dont know how much that is in miles... I usually take my d700 with a 16-35 and a 70-200 2.8. My tripod from the beginning is the manfrotto 190xprob , with a very heavy joystick which i intend to change for a ball head. But as tripod and joystick are so heavy I don't take it with me...Thats why I want to change to Gitzo, because of its built and quality...I also like doing some macro so its very difficult for me to decide.And in Spain there are hardly any Gitzo in shops for you to look at them so its even more difficult! What I would hate to do is to buy a series two traveler and then find myself not being stable enough. Thanks a lot Speedster.
@Speedster2707
@Speedster2707 7 жыл бұрын
10-20 Km? That's a hike! I would opt for the 2542T Gitzo. It's sturdier than my series 1 Traveler. It holds about 11 more pounds than your Manfrotto (up to 26lbs), and is almost 2 lbs lighter than the Manfrotto. You can always hang your camera bag or other weight from the bottom of the center column to keep it sturdier in wind or with that 70-200. (I've also found that placing a soft weight on top of my larger, mounted lenses, really decreases vibration.) ;-)

awesome video thanks a lot :D Best video on youtube that show the difference between gitzo and another brand. I have a D700 and 24-70 and maybe going to buy a longer lense like a 70-300mm for Landscapes and long exposure with nd filters . Do you think I should be ok with a traveller gitzo like 1545t or 2545t or should I buy a mountaineer gitzo instead ? I should add I also need some stability in snow and with some wind.

@Speedster2707
@Speedster2707 8 жыл бұрын
+Rick V - I hear ya! W/o knowing exactly which Manfrotto you have or the type of lenses you use with your DSLR, I will give you this recommendation: The Induro CLT shown here weighs 3.4lbs. You could go with a CLT 104 that weighs a bit less at 2.8 lbs and is slightly smaller. The former holds 35 lbs and the latter holds 30 lbs. Both should be okay up to using a DSLR with a 70-200 2.8 lens. The 4-leg tripods are smaller but weigh a bit more compared to their counterparts with 3 legs. Check out the video around 13:00 and it shows the Gitzo 1542T "Traveler" tripod. This is the one I have. Super light and compact. I can stick my DSLR on it and if it's not windy out and I'm careful in shooting (cord or 2 sec delay), I can put my 70-200 lens on there and shoot fine. There are, of course others, just figure out the weight of your equip and find a tripod small enough to hold it. Hope this helps.

Read the comment below written by me entitled, "As an Update..." It will give you useful information on the Gitzo. My wife bought the Induro. As stated below, she has no issues w/it. I think it all has to do w/your budget. I think the Gitzo is made a little better than the Induro and if you have the money, buy it. But you can't go wrong w/the Induro. I used my wife's. It's a great tripod. If you didn't want to spend the money, you will not be disappointed with that tripod.

Both the Gitzo and Induro tribods are comparable. However, there are two issues besides price. One is warranty. Induro has a five year warranty while the Gitzo is less. The second is that I have heard that Gitzo customer service is not very good while Induro has been reported to be very good.
@Speedster2707
@Speedster2707 8 жыл бұрын
I have not experienced the Gitzo customer service, so I can not comment on this. The Gitzo warranty is for 7 years. The Induro is for 5 years, but if you register on-line, they double it to 10 years. From Gitzo: Gitzo “Limited Conventional Warranty Extension”: free warranty extension up to 7 years from the date of purchase. Beyond the standard coverage outlined above, Gitzo offers an additional limited warranty extension valid up to 7 years from the original date of purchase, in accordance with the terms and conditions overleaf. The Gitzo “Limited Conventional Warranty Extension” is free of charge and does not affect the mandatory “Standard Limited Warranty”. The “Limited Conventional Warranty Extension” is only valid if the country of (shipping) /purchase/registration is the same. To take advantage of the “Limited Conventional Warranty Extension” scheme, you must register your product with us within 12 months from the date of purchase. From Induro: • In USA: Extend Your Warranty by 5 years. This is in addition to your 5 year warranty, for a total of 10 years.

Thanks for the review. For me, I can't justify the 2x premium cost over the Induro. It comes down to amount of use too. Professionals who rely on their equipment as their bread and butter, I would see why they would get the best of everything money can buy. But for weekend warriors like me who use tripods mainly for travel, I'll take the cheaper route where "close enough" is good enough.
