Not quite about a brothel, about the awkward exchange of trying to buy condoms for the first time at a chemist after turning 16 (the age of consent in the UK). Madness are far more working class than Blur, a lot of their early stuff especially centers around a brutally honest reflection of youth in Britain that's still pretty relevant 40 years on

substitute the word "chemist" for drugstore/pharmacy....its about a 16 year old boy trying to buy condoms, but too embarrassed to ask the female assistant. So he's trying to come up descriptions that she would understand. If you watch the video that went with the song you would get it straight away

Yes, when I was 15 my mate always asked me to go buy his rubbers from the chemist. I was double pissed off, not only was he too afraid to buy his own, but I was still a virgin then and did not have a girlfriend! Same as when I used to go score drugs for him, he was the cool guy who was afraid of dealers, I was the not so cool guy who had to supply the cool guys with whatever they needed. I made up for it later though, most of the cool guys got jobs and settled down, where I was still out partying and making up for lost time! 😁

I've seen Madness on numerous occasions and they put on a fantastic show, the craziest show was in Manchester when Carter USM were supporting them. The warm up guy from a local radio station had bottles thrown at him and made a quick stage left exit, Carter came on and got absolutely torn to bits, then they did Sheriff Fatman and everything settled down, the song finished and they got torn apart again (there is an interview with Carter talking about that night). When Madness came on the entire room was black but for a shaft of light coming down onto the stage, Chas Smash stuck his face into it and started in the way that all Madness fans know........the roof came off the place and never landed until the show ended...

I recommend Madness "Living in a ghost town" it was written about Coventry the second most violent city in Europe at the time (8os) they closed every night club in the city to stem the violence . I lost a few friends to murder ,drugs , suicide saw a taxi driver beaten and knifed to death out side the Woodend chippy across the road from my flat , i used to drink at the Belfery and also The Live and Let Live ( known localy as the live and let die ) i was 16 and 8 pints of "Snake bite" ( Extra strong cider mixed with extra strong larger ) a very popular drink that got banned was normal of a night and after your ready to take on the World . The infamous Woodend estate was torn down every last house shortly after the Woodend riots . Now Coventry is the most CCTV coverd UK city. I loved the Two tone and the northen soul music of that decade it was the best "innit booyaka!"

I believe that it is about a ‘newly legal’ young man who is trying to buy his first pack of condoms in a pharmacy but older people that he knows keep coming in, he gets embarrassed and asks for other random items, leading to the manager telling him to go to the joke shop instead. I think the carnival (or fun fair as we’d call it in the U.K.) vibe is a reflection of the excitement he feels, thinking that a whole new world of sex has opened up to him. On the Two Tone thing, the term actually came about (as far as I’m aware) because it was the name of the record label that The Specials started to actually kick start their career. This is also the record label that Madness were signed to, as well as many others. So, Two Tone became the catch all term for the different styles of Ska that was being made in the late 70’s early 80’s.

This was the wrong song. Our House, My Girl, It Must be love. Any one of them 3 and you will fall in love. The night boat to Cairo or one step beyond is not the right choice for Americans to understand
