Here's on-board footage from the new Triumph Speed Triple 400, with in-camera audio from the GoPro Hero 12 and Media Mod. This is the sportier cafe racer style machine or roadster of the new two beginner centric Triumph 400s, with the sibling bike being the Scrambler 400 X.
Written reviews of both models will be up at MCNew.com.au.

The 400 would be plenty capable, it's just a matter of whether you want the triple, bump in performance and a bigger bike feel, and the ensuing cost with the Trident. Depending on your age, the Speed 400 might be a lot more reasonable to insure, if that's a factor. The Trident is a nice step up from the 400s though, if you want more and don't mind paying for it.

Hi Kris, that handle bar almost looks as wide as the bikes length. What’s your opinion on this bike in comparison to the 400 from team green and the 373 cc single used by KTM and Huskvarna?

Haha it is seriously wide, works well though and we could still filter back into Melbourne. Both bikes seem to stack up well against the existing 390s/400s. Styling is the obvious unique point. The engine has a great mid-range, but not quite the top end of some of the competition. That's a happy compromise in my mind and where you'll be using it most. Very smooth for a single. Suspension and brakes are exceptional, lack of adjustability on the former not being a concern for me at 75 kg. I did prefer the Speed 400 over the Scrambler 400 X, but that's fairly subjective. They feel more premium than I'd expected, which I'd say is a win over my 401 for instance. Each bike has it's strengths, but I think Triumph are well placed to take a good bite out of the market with these two machines.

@@MotoJournoKris That’s interesting. Thank you. As with the launch of the Trident I thought the build quality was poor at best from what I’d expected from Triumph.

Better than your 401, Kris? The new 390 Duke matches this, at least. It's lighter. I may sell my SCR950 and 390 Duke Mk2 and replace them with one bike. Nick

I'd probably say more refined, better finish quality, and smoother in the engine department. Not as sporty as the 401 in the engine department though either.

Not as sporty. Good to hear. Viva the 390/401! Nick@@MotoJournoKris

Im trying to toss up if i go thos bike or the trident as my first bike. I live in the adelaide hills and travel into city for work so i need a hours worth of half highway half city. As much as i like the 400 im woried it will be reving too high going up and down the mountains. Thoughts?

I'd say the 400 will do the job quite easily, BUT the Trident would do it better. I guess the harder judgement is whether the Trident is $5K better. It does look like there's quite a few Trident's available second hand though too, which would reduce that difference down considerably, and make the Trident an even better deal. The triple is a bit special too, I'd say (with quite a bit of bias) over the twins and singles that are becoming so popular.

I'm not sure to be honest, I'm not very familiar with the roads in Victoria as I'm from Sydney.

This is the smallest thing, but damn I wish triumph would change the design of their dials lol. I didn’t really like the circle with a bar on it 15 years ago, and it’s really not got better 🤣 But I have to say the more I see of these 400’s the more I think I might have been wrong about them. I still do not believe for one second they are 100% triumph design as triumph try so hard to imply but not actually say - I’m fairly certain that’s a bajaj engine in a triumph costume because its specs are so similar to other triumph engines and it only makes sense to make a single 400 if you’re an Indian bike company lol. But that aside I do have to give triumph some props for how they worked with bajaj here. I don’t have bajaj at all - their bikes built with the 390 engines didn’t have any problems, on KTM’s did. But I do hate dishonesty and I think triumph are being deliberately misleading with it. But hey, it is what is it. Otherwise this is not a BMW 310 fiasco, these bikes seem pretty great whoever designed their engines - really well suited and built to a decent spec for the price. I was actually surprised to realise that the scrambler 400 might actually be the best scrambler potentially in the LAMS class, assuming you give up on that lie you’ve been telling yourself about how much dirt you actually ride ;)

Interestingly Cliff Stoval, the Triumph Australia tech guru was saying the engine looks derived from the Speed Triple 1200, essentially running a single cylinder, which wasn't that unusual historically with various brands. India is a huge market though and it'd make sense for Triumph to launch the bike specifically to compete there. They reckon five years in development so it's been a long time coming. I'd guess the partnership with Bajaj and access to India is what makes the whole project worthwhile. It could become their biggest market as far as bike sales. Triumph Australia were pretty upfront though telling us this is 100% a Triumph bike, not shared with anyone else, specifically to Triumph's design and specifications. It does seem to be coming out on top in the scrambler category, I'm interested to see what's been done with the new 401 though on that one.
