Triumph Tiger 800 XC and Tiger Explorer 1200 Review: Cat Video

The Tiger 800 XC and Tiger Explorer 1200 are a direct attack on BMW's F800GS Siegfried and R1200GS Roy, but the Triumphs are well capable of standing on their own merits. That raises another question, which big cat to take home? OneWheelDrive.Net puts the two Tigers to the test to find out, in our take on that standard internet meme - the cat video.

Ran a 1200 GS and a 1200 Explorer on my Tiger 800. Rolling start at 30mph to 115mph. I stayed within one length at 115mph. Not worth worrying about. And with the weight difference, greater "flickability" and better mpg, the 800 is the better machine. In my humble opinion, of course!

I have an orange 2012 800 xc. From nyc to Colorado 4.300 miles round trip, between gs 1200, explorer 1200, yam teneré 1200, and everybody felt in love with the first generation xc. 22.000 miles on it and just oil changes and gas. That's it.

Thank you for this OFF-ROAD review! I've had my 2012 800 XC for about 6 mos and am planning a 3400 miles trip around the Western United States. All videos, for research, that I've come across(including Triumph's own website) gives jack for any off-roading review or capability. Especially for the Explorer. I'm looking at up-grading to that one for this trip. I love my 800 XC, but I test rode the Explorer yesterday and I must say, what a bike! Even if I don't upgrade I will still be super happy.

Brilliant review and comparison, the best i have seen to date. I have been looking at both for long distance touring with both black top and dirt roads and i was looking at the 800 but now i'm very interested in the 1200 and will have to go and try one now. Thanks for not beating around the bush as well and calling it as you see it. Very much appreciated .

Awesome review Neil ! Love the quirky humor bits, especially the squinty-eyed BMW face. I moved from a Yamaha Raider to a TIger 800 XC last week in part thanks to reviews like yours. I'm no Bubba Stewart, but having fun on dirt roads (where no cruiser would dare venture). I've owned 4 yamaha's but I went with Tiger 800 over Super tenere cuz it just "felt right" !. (even in America, bigger is not always better) thanks again !

Just bought an 800XC but have not had a chance to ride off road yet. I have been surprised by the on-road performance, though. There is a much smaller fun differential between it and my Ducati than I thought and I am really enjoying riding it. I put some Caribou cases with Hepco Becker racks on it and they seem rock-solid (the dealer couldn't GIVE me the Triumph cases...and they offered!). I though I would keep the Ducati, but am having second thoughts. It's just not that much more fun.

An excellent review and comparison. I just put a deposit down on the 1200 XC. This will be more suited for my longer distances on the Tarmac loaded up with occasional gravel type off roads. I think both bikes have their strengths and weaknesses. Both have great character and are great and for your buck compared with the competition.

A good balanced review. I've just bought an 800 XC and it does everything it should plus a bit more. Tour, light trail or fun road trips it has it all. If Steve McQueen was around today, he'd more likely be on this rather than the bonnie.

A big thing that is rarely mentioned is the Tiger 1200 is a pretty big bike. If you are 5' 9" and under, and less than, say 175Lbs this bike is way too big for you. The 1200 XC for a guy my size (6' 2" 250Lbs) it a toy that I can throw around in the dirt, on the road...anywhere. I see very small men reviewing the bike complaining about the bike saying its too big too ride off-road. To this I say: "stick to a bike suited for your size, don't give an opinion on a bike that you have no business riding in the first place. Review an 800,or smaller cause that is a suitable bike for you." OneWheelDrive is the first guy I've seen on here capable of riding the 1200 and having a valid opinion on it. Thanks for that!

Interesting review, great scenery, mud-plugging. But hey, you missed some wordplay - what about 'clawing their way up the mountain', or 'falling off is not a cat-astrophe'? Anyway, I liked the 'tall engine wearing the fuel tank as a hat' -that's very nice indeed. Where's the electric motor/regen braking in the front hub though?! Cars are way ahead, and I am dying to see a two-wheel drive bike - you? Darn, then there's your whole channel name to reconsider...!

Unfortunately, we can't speak to the reliability long term as we only had the bikes for a month to film. BMW is solid, and now has a great warranty. I'm not familiar with the Triumph warranty, but the bikes are well and conservatively engineered in my opinion.

If I remember correctly you're relatively tall. How did you find the wind protection/buffeting on the tiger 1200? Both of the r1200gs and multistrada 1200 give me an excessive amount of wind buffet that becomes a colossal annoyance after an hour on the interstate.

I cam away really impressed with the Tiger 800 XC. My only big issue is that I would like to have seem more ground clearance. I took it though a very challenging rock garden following a friend on a KTM 690 Enduro R and got high centred. That said it was a mid-sized adventure bike out riding with an enduro, so well outside its comfort zone.

I'm 6"2', the air flow on the Explorer 1200 with the windscreen in the up-most position was really good. I generally use the Icon Variant, which is a beaked helmet, and there was only minimal buffeting. WAY BETTER than the Multi! I can't speak to the new R1200GS though.

The 800 XC has a flaw with the passenger rear sets. A buddy of mine low sided his on a gravel rd and broke the rear set right off. The 800 does not have a rear sub-frame so the bike was basically totaled.

Really, tough call. I'd be split between the Explorer XC and R1200GS. So would recommend looking at the areas where you are traveling, and comparing that to the dealer support in those areas should anything go wrong. I'd also talk to your local dealers to determine the cost of ownership for both bikes over the long term. Once those are elements are factored into your choice, maybe that will help? Then go with the one that makes your heart sing just a little more ;)

N-SPEC .Racing Been wondering to get "adventure bike". Been looking much into F???GS series, but just recently figured out that Tiger 800 XC would be an good option too. And I'm actually now much more interested in Tiger just because of better engine imo. Although many reviews also claim they're generally well build, which can't be said about the latest BMW's that apparently have quite a bit of technical problems. Though right now I'm more in mood to upgrade my street bike as 800 XC is bit too expensive for now to upgrade (also).

The 800 should be consider as medium size not to compare with the Big Guys,I do agree that all the big guys trying to match the benchmark that the reputed GS established. They all great machines, end it all will end with the way the appeal to you, & how deep your hand can reach into your pocket, it's been mentioned that the Dealer Network is very impotent, as well, I'm planing a long trip from SoCal to Argentina, Triumph is offering a very little support over there Vs BMW & Yamaha or Suzuki

Sure but the Triumph service is more expensive than the BMW service since the engine is more complicated. Talking about the 8GS and 8XC here. 10k service on my GS is 100€ 10k service on my brothers XC is 180€ 20k service on GS is 190€ 20k service on XC 330€ 30k service on GS is 150€ 30k service on the tiger 260€ Even saw some guys paying more than 600€ their service on the Tiger. The new LC engine is even easier to service than the old one. I'm expecting the same result.
