The scenes where the skeletal Terminator is walking around is done a couple of ways. When you see it walking and it looks kind of jerky, that’s stop motion, a puppet moved frame by frame. It’s a painstaking, time intensive art that’s largely fallen away due to CG, but there are still a few filmmakers using it. Most of the other shots are full sized body parts that are controlled off screen. For the mid 80s, it works shockingly well and still holds up in my opinion. I loved you calling this a horror movie because I maintain that this is straight up a slasher movie. The Terminator belongs in the same category as Jason or Freddy or Michael Myers as a villain who cannot be killed and just keeps coming. Also, lots of people, have said it already, but watch T2 as soon as possible. It is a fantastic sequel, very important to the advancement of visual effects, and is a kick ass action movie to boot.
@michaelwinkle4480

As a lover of SF and fantasy films since the '60s, I always admired stop-motion effects (especially those of Willis O'Brien (original KING KONG) and Ray Harryhausen (7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD, JASON & THE ARGONAUTS, etc.). Harryhausen retired in 1979, and when I saw TERMINATOR in 1984, I thought the brief stop-motion scenes were rather crude. "It's a lost art already," I thought. A reviewer of TERMINATOR -- David Gerrold, I think -- said this was basically a slasher movie with a killer that keeps coming back from the dead -- but for once there's an actual explanation for his invincibility. I think even James Cameron said something to that effect.

When this movie dropped in theaters it stunned people. This was before Arnold was a big star and no one had ever heard of James Cameron. We caught it on a Friday night after getting stoned out of our minds (Don't judge :P That's what teenagers did in the 80's as a prelude to pretty much everything despite Nancy Regan.) I think we went to go see it mostly on the novelty of Arnold being in it, and I walked out of that theater asking "What in the F*** did I just watch?" It was amazing. Literal overnight sensation from that point. Always great to see the next generation watch such a classic.

He raised taxes multiple times when trickle down economics failed to work, but he did look presidential on camera and since he was an actor he could say the most over the top smarmy things while sounding absolutely sincere.

FUN FACT: Arnold was originally set to play Kyle Reese while others were considered for the Terminator. This includes Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson and even O.J. Simpson, whom director James Cameron turned down because he didn't think he would be a convincing killer (insert obvious joke here). However when Cameron met Arnold, he immediately saw him in the role. Arnold was reluctant because he didn't want to portray an emotionless machine, but agreed because the movie was so underground at the time that if it failed, it wouldn't hurt his career.

But on budget of 6.4 million dollars (which would be about 17.4 million dollars today) it managed to make 78 million dollars (which would be about 213 million dollars today). So, because of it's success, they greenlit a sequel and gave James Cameron a HUGE increase in the budget for T2. T2 had a budget of 100 million dollars for it's day (which would be about 218 million dollars today) and made 515 million dollars (or about 1.12 billion dollars in todays dollars). T2 ... which you should definitely watch ... is considered one of the best sequels ever made. Just about everyone will say that T2 is by far the best movie in the Terminator franchise. After that... the movies go downhill. I personally loved T3, though not as much as 2 or 1. Then T4 and T5 I liked ... though generally speaking they were flops. T3 barely made a profit, T4 made more of a profit than T3 even though they made almost identical at the box office but only because the budget was less. And T5 was a flop, losing about 130 million dollars. While I acknowledge the ... flaws with T3, T4 and T5, I still enjoyed the movies. Then you get to the new and latest.. T6 - Dark Fate.. that movie was a HUGE mistake. It lost over 250 million dollars and with it's story line it completely destroyed ALL previous movies that came before it.. storywise. T6 shit on all previous movies as if they were garbage to be disposed of. I won't get into that more...because, just because I hated the movie with a passion you wouldn't believe (as did most everyone), there were "some" people who enjoyed it. Who knows, maybe you like it. There is also a Terminator TV series. A very good but short lived TV series called Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It was unfortunately cancelled after only 2 seasons, but it was really well made and is worth a watch if you are really into the Terminator franchise!

The first two, absolute classics… T3 has great moments, it has cringe moments, but overall it’s a tired effort… T:Salvation was a nice change with the focus on the early years of the Future War… T:Genisys, I liked the idea (alternate timeline), but the execution was not so great… and that brings us to Dark Fate… that was one of those rare occasions where I wish I could’ve got a refund on my cinema ticket 🤬 (The League Of Extraordinary Gentleman starring Sir Sean Connery, and Guy Ritchie’s Revolver are the only other occasions I felt that way.) Not even having Arnie, a returning Linda Hamilton, and James Cameron being involved could save that one.

Fun facts - Sarah in Hebrew means “princess” and Connor in Gaelic means “lover of hounds” or “hunter”. So, the protagonist’s name means “Princess Hunter.”

That's kinda cool if you skew it to mean "Hunted princess" since John Connor leading the resistance he kind of becomes a pseudo king in the future for humanity.

1) A graphics equalizer is just a piece of audio processing equipment that allows one to attenuate some audio by frequency band. When electronic production, control, and filtering of audio began to become big (the '80s), these became common, and yes, they still exist. But, as another commenter pointed out, bass/mid/treble controls are a very simple 3-band form of graphic equalizer. It was called this because, very often, the set of sliding knobs would be paired with a visual display of the audio intensity for the same frequency bands being controlled, so it was "graphic" in that you could see and adjust which bands were louder or quieter in order to enhance certain frequency ranges, in order to "equalize" the sound output, perhaps to correct for deviations introduced by other components in the processing chain, equipment, or even room (such as in the cabin of a car). 2) Ginger was such a good girlfriend. She gave Matt nookie, and THEN went to make and bring him a sandwich! (Man, all these years, I'm embarrassed to admit I thought she was just making the sandwich for herself... (although, I suppose this interpretation can't entirely be ruled out, so...)) 3) I'm always amused seeing reactors be surprised the Terminator is a machine when the movie opens with the lines "The machines rose from the ashes of the nuclear fire" and were clearly the enemy of humanity, so what else would he be?

The main thing is that she avoids the "director's cut" with the alternate ending (which is not really a directors cut, since Cameron doesn't consider it canon, and he prefers his 2017 remastered version)

Shoutout to Blue trying to re-invent the last 38 years of trying to figure out how the timelines work for the Terminator (and later its sequels)... It sounds like you're thinking it out as a stable time loop (For the Doctor Who fans - who wrote Beethoven's Fifth?) - Kyle Reese has always been John's father, and has always gone back in time to stop a Terminator that always goes back. For a few reasons, fans typically theorize that it's not stable or a loop, but that instead this is the third timeline, and the third time through 1984 (Orville would never!): 1. Time moves as normal. Sarah finds some guy to have a son with and names him John. Skynet becomes self-aware, everything gets nuked, humans start getting hunted by terminators - But John is able to rally a resistance behind him to fight back and defeat the machines, so Skynet sends a T-800 back to kill Sarah. John asks for a volunteer to protect her, and one man steps forth - Kyle Reese. 2. Kyle Reese and the T-800 arrive in LA in 1984, and things happen a lot like the movie, but Kyle has much less knowledge of Sarah beforehand. Still, Sarah no longer gets to meet the guy from the first go around, and instead names her son via Kyle 'John', after the son she would have had (used to expect to have? Time travel makes language stupid.), because she knows she needs to give birth to and raise John Connor. Then, war happens, and a slightly older and better prepared John, now equipped with a photo of Sarah thinking about Kyle, does an even better job of rallying the resistance, and of preparing Kyle Reese to go back and.... Uh, make sure he's created one day - Which he does, but now he does it because he loves Sarah and wants to meet her, not out of loyalty to John. 3. "The Terminator". Anyone reading this has already watched the movie, or at least the highlights, probably pretty recently. If you need a recap, scroll up. If that sounds confusing... That's because it's time travel, and things that break linear time break our tiny linear brains. You should definitely watch Terminator 2 though - It's excellent, and really dives headfirst into this moreso than T1 does.

The greatest thing about this movie is that when I did the MasterClass online by James Cameron it was very clearly of how he got that idea for this movie and everybody knows it anyways. He said “The Imagination never stops. It’s always working. I think ideas come to any kind of artist from different sources, and the subconscious is one that certainly the surrealist artists back around the turn of the last century believed in. They believed in dream imagery. They believed that it was an unmediated, unintellectualized version of their subconscious creative force or imagination, and Jim believe that to be true also. It’s his ZERO-COST SUBSCRIPTION to a streaming service that’s all his own.” He also said “To pick an example, “Terminator” started as a dream image. The axle terminator itself and the image of it as a chrome metal skeleton emerging out of a fire with the certain knowledge, in the same way that you have a certain knowledge in dreams about something, about what the thing you’re seeing means or the person that you’re seeing, what they mean to you in the dream.” Last but not least he said “Then i had to justify, where am I? Why is there a metal skeleton? Why did it have skin over it? Well, obviously there was purpose to that. And we don’t have that, so that comes from the future. And hey, maybe I could make a movie about that in the present day if there was time travel. So boom boom boom all the pieces is assembled around that nucleus of a dream image.” And my goodness it was one of the best I’ve ever studied and wrote everything down on my notebook!

Originally OJ Simpson was considered to play the role of the Terminator but James Cameron changed his mind saying, "He's too much of a nice guy to play the role of a ruthless killer ".😳🤦 Tom Selleck, Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson and Lance Henriksen were considered. Bruce Springsteen, Michael O'Keefe, Tommy Lee Jones, Christopher Reeve, Scott Glenn, Sting, and Matt Dillon were considered for Kyle Reese. Lea Thompson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jessica Harper, Melissa Sue Anderson, Rosanna Arquette, and Lisa Langolis were considered for Sarah Connor.

Interesting facts: James Cameron was in Rome in 1981, he was sick with fever and had a nightmare in which he saw the metal skeleton of the terminator emerging from flames. The movie was done on a $6 million budget but grossed 38 million. O.J. Simpson was considered initially for the role of the Terminator, and Arnold first auditioned for the role of Kyle Reese. However during script discussion, it became obvious he was more interested and perfect for the role of the terminator. Arnold was apprehensive of the phrase: "I'll be back." He wanted to say it "I will be back" because he wasn't comfortable with the abbreviation. James Cameron however, insisted he say it like this.

My favorite Arnold movie is still his breakout film, Conan: the Barbarian. It's faithful to the spirit of the source material and is a good example of High Fantasy from before Lord of the Rings was published. It reminds me of my early RPG days when my imagination craved fresh swords and sorcery intrigue and adventure. The part seemed made for him. I wish the sequel held up half as well.

This Terminator is an 800-series (T-800, which has real human flesh instead of rubber skins like the T-600 had) combat chassis, Model 101 (which means that it looks like Arnold--there were a bunch of different human flesh models, presumably, and we saw a different one in Kyle's flashback).

The genre this belongs to in cinema was called tech noire, basically black future, a future where technology has been misused or taken over humanity. Other films of this type include Blade Runner, Brazil, Dark City, to name a few. Tech Noir is the name of the nightclub Sarah Conner hides in from Kyle Reece when Arnie shows up and shoots it up.

The late Bill Paxton is the only actor to have his characters die in all three of the Terminator, Alien and Predator series. (He plays Hudson in Aliens). 4. Ginger's boyfriend Matt must not be a good lay if she has to listen to her headphones when they rock and roll. 5. Lance Henriksen is the third guy to play in Aliens (he plays Bishop) 6. Your speculation as to where the Terminator's AI is located and whether cutting its head off would work reminded me of the short-lived TV show, THE SARAH CONNER CHRONICLES. In this series a Terminator manages to lose its head, but it still functions and is still able (somehow) to see/sense things. It not only takes some poor biker's clothes and motorcycle, it also takes his head! It then tools around with a motorcycle helmet covering the slowly rotting head (they started adding lovely buzzing fly sound effects to show that vermin were starting to collect on it 😵).

Oh and, to respond to your statement, if you WANT to be pinned down to a car, it CAN be arranged ... I mean that in a GOOD way 😁😉😊😁🤣. Seriously, I was impressed that you realized/remembered that the Terminator could mimic voices when Sarah was talking to her "mom" on the phone, but I was surprised that you missed that, as they panned around to whoever was talking to Sarah on the phone, that the door had a shotgun blast in the dead center of it, and of course, that's obviously how and where the terminator entered the cabin.
