Here’s my take on the new trolls movie, Trolls: Band Together. Of course, major spoilers in this review and I’m also being very picky. These things will only impact a small group of children who have potentially experienced some childhood trauma or might be really sensitive to specific topics.
Did I miss anything? Let me know in the comments.

As an adult who dealt with: 1. Childhood trauma 2. Food insecurity 3. Housing Insecurity 4. Abuse 5. Violence among siblings 6. A Narcissistic Parent who lied/betrayed 7. Parentification i.e. taking on an adult role of responsibility for siblings I can see that this movie would have been very triggering for me as a young child/teenager. Even as an adult, who deals with the affects of said trauma, I appreciate the heads up. 😅👍 Thank you for all you do. ☺️❤️

Dear, dear, Laura, I worked as an elementary school teacher for twenty years. Although I have never been a foster parent, and am not in a position to care for children now, I love your videos. It gives me such joy to know that you are not only doing this very important work but are sharing your astute insights with others. This foster parent must have really seen it all. Unfortunately all these fictional scenarios have pretty direct real life equivalents-but of course it doesn’t have to be a literal cage or closet to resonate. I hope making these videos is therapeutic. Vicarious trauma is real.

Kids movies often have a lot of dark subjects. Even newer ones. I mean Anna is slowly dying in Frozen and that was for really young children too. Children are little humans, many of whom will expirience difficult things themselves in real life. Having dark subjects in children's media isn't a bad thing, I'd argue it's a necesity (though of corse not in every movie/book). What matters is how it's presented.

As full grown adults, my friends and I have a long-running practice of giving each other "heads up" trigger warnings about things we know we have trauma about for popular media/media we recommend, so we can make informed choices. Whether it's for an adult or child, everyone deserves that consideration! Thank you for doing this for foster-specific trauma as well! Taking these things into consideration isn't "weak" or "coddling," it's being respectful and caring for other humans in our community, and that's SO important!

I think it has Always been that way, and works out because children dont think too much into it (depending on development they might be scared but Not all). While they can't handle the "realistic everyday adjacent scenario" that adults watch because it IS too real for them.

I don't have any kids, but what's your advice for if as a parent/foster parent you decide the movie might be too triggering for the kids, but the kids won't shut up about how much they want to see the movie? You probably don't want to just be like "WE AREN'T SEEING THE TROLLZ MOVIE AND THAT'S FINAL. STOP ASKING." but what are you supposed to do? Does it work with kids of a certain age to say "I think this movie might make you, specifically, upset given your past"? If you say that, what if the kid is like "It won't, I promise I won't get upset! Everyone else is seeing it!"? Just asking out of curiosity. It's purely a hypothetical for me, I was just wondering how you go about dealing with when the kid is begging to see a movie you think might hit too close to home for the kid in a bad way.

I'm not a parent either, but I think it's fine to say "I am not letting you watch it because I know it would make you sad". And maybe "let's watch it when we can rent it at home so we can pause it if we need to."
@seajelly2421
@seajelly2421 8 ай бұрын
As a parent, I have a conversation with my child at their level to explain the reasons why I am deciding the film is inappropriate. I don't get into the detail, but I do demonstrate that it's because I'm looking out for their well-being. For example, I might explain that the movie is too rough, and that we can look instead for a film where the characters cooperate instead of fight, or go on adventures together, and then I redirect to that. Even content with antagonism, or where there is the good guy-bad guy trope, used to be very upsetting for my little one. They would develop nightmares and anxieties stemming from that content. So we have ongoing conversations, and they understand from that that I am looking out for their best interests.

As an adult who was previously in the system, I as a kid would have found a way to secretly watch the movie if I really wanted to. Preventing me at that point probably wouldve been an invasion of privacy, something which could have been very traumatizing. I think having a very honest and respectful conversation with the kid about your concerns but letting them ultimately make the decision would be the best call. If they still want to see it, at least they can see it with you as a support, and you can together plan for what happens if the movie ends up being too much. If your child has PTSD, it is really important to be aware of what might trigger them. But also if they are expressing a willingness to look at and process these triggers, that's actually super important for healing. Being a safe place to explore healing would be very important when raising children, especially traumatized ones. And offering traumatized kids agency and control over their trauma in safe ways can make a huge difference. I am not yet a parent, but hopefully you find my insights and opinions useful to take into consideration.
@SupremeViola
@SupremeViola 8 ай бұрын
I'd probably start by framing media as "fun" vs. "upsetting" instead of "appropriate" vs. "inappropriate" as a lot of kids in foster care have been exposed to inappropriate media; the term is going to feel arbitrary to them. You can model looking up trigger information whenever you start to consider a film ("I find that I can't really enjoy watching a movie if pets are in danger; it makes me feel really anxious. Let's look up whether this movie has that kind of thing happening in it. While I'm doing that, let's think of other things that might make it hard for us to have fun") and try to make it more of a discussion. Janne_Mai is also right that compromise can be considered, like waiting until the movie can be rented so you can watch it in a more familiar space and pause it whenever.
@bran7536
@bran7536 8 ай бұрын
You can also suggest waiting until the movie becomes available on DVD, so that you can watch it in a more familiar environment where it's easier to stop or pause if kids get overwhelmed. (Not a parent either.)

One year as a summer camp counselor the movie night movie that was picked was Pay It Forward. My campers had no issues but many counselors came to the next morning meet up looking exhausted. The drinking, abuse, and the death in that movie was very triggering for those teenagers. We had campfire not long afterwards and i could hear so many people sniffling and see them holding each other. I told one of the more recent directors for summer camp that they should do fun, light hearted movies. These are high schoolers, keep it fun. Lots of them come from troubled homes and camp was there escape, keep it light. Lots of kids have issues the last 2 nights of camp because they will be going back home to those issues. Its heartbreaking.

This is also a great guide of whether you can see the movie in theaters or if you should wait until streaming/DVD release. This movie or other movies like it may be a gently way to help a child process or talk through traumatic memories. Or a child may simply really want to see the movie. In both cases, reviews like this determine whether watching the movie at home, where you can discuss scenes with the child, pause the movie for a break, fast-forward certain scenes or turn it off and change to something else would movie would be best for the child. It’s really great that you do this, especially by being so “picky” because there are few if any places that review kids movies in a trauma-informed way. I hope you continue despite any mean-spirited criticism.

If you don't have the space or money to take her in, there's a lot of charities and government programs (depending where you live) that you could let know of her situation that might be able to help, especially if she's in a situation considered a priority (any combination of: single mother, pregnant, mentally or physically ill or disabled, has addictions, has trauma, is rough sleeping etc) Try doing a search for your/her area and getting in contact with someone. In my country, your local authority is obliged to prevent and help homeless people by negotiating with landlords and providing low-cost housing/helping them get a job/access to benefits. I'm currently in contact with mine due to living in temp housing I need to leave soon.

I went with my son's grade 1 class and i didnt think it was age appropriate. Movies are not made family friendly like in the past.

Thank you so much! Many “kids” movies these days are the very last thing kids should be exposed to. We have to protect the children and stop the cycle of violence in the world. You are doing amazing work ❤❤❤

Honestly I really wonder what these movies want. This is traumatic for everyone and in any case not constructive. Why cant they tell positive stories?

The first Trolls movies came out when my teenagers were still young (2010's?) and it was SO popular, especially the songs which all the moms and kids in our mommy groups seemed to know and love. We aren't a big TV watching family, but my kids asked, so I let them watch it (I was nearby folding laundry.) I was absolutely horrified and traumatized by this "children's" movie!! The offending parts that I remember had to do with a feast of some sort I think, very evil and dark themes, it seriously creeped me out. Someone was going to be eaten by someone else?? They were imprisoned in cages?? It was so horrifying, and not "feel good" at all. We switched it off and turned on PBS kids instead. I just couldn't believe how dark and icky it felt to me (an adult!) watching those scenes. I can't imagine how it would feel as a child who's experienced trauma similar to this 😢

What a terrible “children’s” movie. Very rare to find any children’s movies these days that are suitable. Thank you for the review.
