I remember sitting in my high school band room with a tuner looking for slide positions. Being a bassoon play when I joined jazz band we had a lot of saxophone players, so my music teacher asked if I wanted to play bass trombone. Now that I am out of school I play pretty much nothing but bass trombone.

Paul thank you for posting your videos are great and we share a very similar sense of humor. LOL. My master instruments are the guitar in the cello and after my career as a performing musician for 20 years, I've been teaching private music instruction for 23 years. I've always believed that as a teacher besides learning all that we can continue to learn, that is so important to be a beginner at an instrument. In this case my new beginner instrument is the trombone which adds up to 21 instruments that I play. This way my students can identify with me in the fact that not only can I sympathize but jokingly I can pull out my newest instrument and say here's what I suck at. LOL. They get a laugh and a lot of comfort out of that. So years go by and I'm no longer a beginner on my empathetic instrument. I have to say I'm falling in love with the trombone, it's becoming my favorite brass instrument. You are an amazing teacher you probably already have a good career, and I would dare say that you have an amazing career ahead of you to look forward to. We need more young teachers like you, your video was comprehensive, easy to understand, and the banana spin is it true art form, LOL. Keep on keeping on. Thanks again.

Dustin here from Galveston. TX... So, I haven't played in almost 20 years but I came across a community band (no auditions) and I want to start playing again. I'm sure there's no quick way to "relearn" but I have a feeling that it will come back to me quickly. My biggest challenge, I feel, will be reading music. Aahhh!! I do sing tenor (bass clef) but it's all by ear. Any suggestions on books, online practice sites or apps?

When I was studying for my B.M.E., in Brass Methods class we learned there are +/-51 slide positions. We didn't discuss bass trombone, which I now play. At the time, I was a trumpet major. In 1991 I decided to change camps and took trombone lessons, so I asked my teacher. He said "There are ZERO positions. There are just notes played well in tune." Now after a couple decades having played Baroque trumpet and learning to lip notes all over the place with no reduction in tone colour or intensity, I often astounded him, as it seemed this ability transferred to the trombone. So he'd often comment: "You sounded great, but I don't have a clue how? Your slide was nowhere near where it should have e been." And I replied: "But you always say, there are no positions, just notes played well in tune." So he wouldn't have said "1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5, 1-6, 1-7." He would have simply said: "f-e,f-e-flat, f-d, f-d-flat. f-c, f-b"

Hi from West Berkshire, England. I'm inspired to learn how to play the trombone because my favourite Cuban salsa band, Orquesta Anacaona, has a very cute trombonista! What is the most suitable beginner trombone to get for a complete newbie who has never played a brass instrument before??
@sarco64
@sarco64 3 жыл бұрын
My advice would be to get a very basic inexpensive small-bore tenor trombone, whether new or used. The only thing that really matters at this point is that the slide moves smoothly without any sticking points. If you're still playing in a year or two you will have a better idea what specific upgrades you might want depending on what type of music you play, for example small bore vs large bore, thumb valve(s) to engage extra tubing vs no thumb valves, etc.

I'm Michael from Portland, Oregon! I'm a euphonium player who would like to learn trombone, but I've always stayed away from it because of how many trombone-euphonium doublers harshen their euphonium sound into a sort of trombony quality. I don't want to change my euphonium sound, and I'm worried that getting used to slide tonguing and the less air pressure would affect my euphonium playing.
@renaissancejuan
@renaissancejuan 5 жыл бұрын
Maybe you can try a valved trombone! Yes its a legit instrument, anyone who makes fun of it "Oh its not a real trombone no slide blah blah" can go to hell 😂 while a euphonium is on that conical bore status the valved trombone takes the cylindrical bored trombone but instead of the slide you got 3 valves. Yes you wont have a slide so no glissando, ever (unless you reallllyyyyy work your lips and half valve technique, but even then it cant be the same thing). But you can stick to the same valve fingerings for both and just have to worry about the tone and air pressure.
@crocshock911
@crocshock911 5 жыл бұрын
I also play a bass trumpet in a military band, which is very similar to a valve trombone or marching baritone, and my secondary instrument is trumpet. I'm not so concerned about the cylindrical bore. I'm concerned about how much less resistance there is on a trombone (valves add a lot of resistance to the flow), and I'm concerned about legato tonguing (for slide technique) making it's way into my euphonium playing.

The figure shown at 1:30 is wildly misleading. The distance between position 2 and 3 is somewhat longer than between 1 and 2. Likewise, the distance between position 3 and 4 is somewhat longer than between 2 and 3. The same holds all the way. The distance between each position becomes larger the the further out you are.
