I am currently renting a home in Santa Ana, CR with my daughter. We moved here in AUG of last year from central FL. She was born in FL, and I moved there from NY as a child - been there over 30 years. When I first moved to FL from NY it was like a paradise. Now having been to CR I would say that I was wrong. 😄 I would agree that your video is pretty accurate in terms of direct comparisons, though I will say dealing with traffic, the cost of healthcare and the rising cost of housing (compared to the rate of pay) in FL is what pushed me to begin to look for other places to live. And though you did mention the insurance costs for housing, it is way worse than what people realize. The insurance costs are back-breaking especially if you want to live on the coast. We have a beach condo, and the HOA fees are almost as much as my mortgage - that is attributed mostly to the cost of insurance split amongst all the units. Our building got hit with a hurricane in 2022 and we are still dealing with the repairs as the insurance has been balking the entire time. Our neighbor's unit has been gutted and she has been displaced for over a year - no work has been done and her belongings have been in a pod container in the parking lot this whole time! All in all, I would say that FL is a nice place to visit and CR is a nice place to live!

WE CURRENTLY LIVE in North Central Florida, after 5 years living in Costa Rica (2004-2009). Currently, we are thinking seriously about returning to CR, to live out our "golden years". Florida has become very expensive for retirees solely dependent on Social Security. Our home & auto insurance has spiked in the last 2 years, along with basics like groceries. If we move, we will probably RENT and not buy. Since we're in our mid-70's, it seems foolish to buy - especially since our 2 adult sons are unlikely to move there.

Larry, I have never heard you mention how many years you have been living in Costa Rica. I currently maintain two homes, one in Minnesota and the other in Florida. Living on a fixed income, the cost of property taxes, insurance, and just general maintenance is becoming prohibitive. I am seriously thinking of making a move to CR and selling the Florida property. With baby boomers entering their retirement age, it is getting crazy here. It is reported that a “welcome to Florida“ sign carried an addendum: “no vacancy.”

Hi Richard. This is Roger. Thank you for watching and sharing your experiences as a Florida property owner. I noticed a few days ago that a News channel out of Miami is running a series called "Paradise Lost" addressing the same issues that you have pointed out in your comment. wsvn.com/news/special-reports/paradise-lost-south-florida-seniors-struggling-to-keep-roof-over-their-heads-due-to-rising-housing-costs/. Costa Rica has also gotten expensive particularity in the coastal areas where the price of real estate increased significantly. In some parts of the Central Valley and in rural areas of Costa Rica it can be more affordable. I was born in Costa Rica and have lived here permanently for over 25 years so I have seen my share of changes.

I have lived in Guanacaste, Costa Rica for 8 years. I enjoy the beach life, and learned to accumulate to the Dry Season heat! The Central Valley is only 2-4 hours drive, for cooler temps and nature. Being a single male, I find the Ticas to be warm, friendly and nurturing. I also find that there are more freedoms and less stresses, living the Pura Vida lifestyle.

Great video. Can you make a video on people who are younger, like in their 40's and what opportunities they can find for working in Costa Rica? Assuming they have a temporary residency status.

I thank you for watching the video and your comments. I am planning a video about the two tier economy in Costa Rica. The part that caters to the Free Trade Zone and Tourism and the part that revolves around the local market. The best opportunities for higher wages are going to be within the companies that are in the Free Trade Zones. You can learn more about that at the site of the Costa Rican Investment Promotion Council. www.cinde.org/es/sectores
