I don't get what the problem is. He has the clause and the choice. He doesn't even need a good reason why he doesn't want to go to a team that is on his list. You can be mad at the team because they signed the deal. But not at the player.

Players should always do what's best for themselves, even if it could be considered "selfish", because teams are always going to do what's best for themselves too. Look at how Vegas let Marchessault walk or how Tampa let Stamkos walk. This is a business and everyone should be looking out for themselves.

@@Ratzy1614 Exactly. Anyone calling Stamkos 'selfish' should call BriseBois a liar for saying he wanted Stamkos to stay (when in reality he had low-balled him with a $3 million a year contract offer and wouldn't budge on that number). And the report was that Stamkos only wanted $4 - 5 million a year... Stamkos isn't any more selfish than any other athlete making millions a year to play a sport- he's just also not a spineless 'company man' who would take less than 50% of his market value to stay with a team that clearly didn't value him (his leadership, his 80+ points, his 40+ goals, any of it).

I 100% don't like Trouba as a player but the dude negotiated his contract with his wife and family as a primary concern. As much as i like to hate on him, not a single ounce of blame should fall on him and good for him for making his wife's career a priority too. He might be a shit head on the ice, but any player or man that puts his family first should not be faulted for it.

His wife has 1 year left of residency and he's going to Detroit for 2 years. Let's be real and I say this as a Rangers fan who has watched his entire tenure here: He fleeced this team with his $56 million dollar contract. He got generational wealth from Jeff Gorton and you're telling me he can't stay away from his wife for 1 year? This isn't even factoring in his horrific play on ice. He got a NTC, captaincy, and is playing for an organization that is notorious for giving out bad contracts and playing them out until it's way too late. Despite all that, he's still being outted by Drury. Does that not demonstrate how bad he is as a player? He's being paid 8 million dollars to be the worst d-man on the team and I'd say our 7th d-guy is even better than him. There are plenty of worse situations he could be in. Good for him for thinking about his wife, but his entire stay here has only set back the team. His contract is part of the reason why this team never resigned Buch, and 3-4 years later, this team is STILL looking for a RW to replace him. If a worker doesn't do his work and constantly pushes back the team because of his incompetency, the company has the right to fire said worker regardless of their personal situation. Don't even get me started with how most of our postseason runs ended because of him.

Seems like every lever he’s pulled afterwards was the wrong one!! But he’s made a bunch of scared or dumb moves since 2019. Did he try to keep up with Brett Hull and drink too much Bud Light in the victory parade and pickle his brain??? Douggie, c’mon. No issue with him refusing to waive a NTC, that’s his right based on his contract. I guess refusing to report if traded is also his choice if he wants to get suspended and forfeit his salary. However, I also don’t have a ton of sympathy for him or his wife because people who make far less money (military families, spouses of people fighting wildfires, etc) deal with being apart for stretches of time due to their work without nearly as many resources to get through it. Even if it’s not ideal, I’m sure Trouba would be able to hire a nanny and make it work for a couple of years.

The problem was the Rangers went to him before the draft and said they had two trades worked out for him, one to Toronto the other to Detroit. They couldn’t trade him until noon on July 1st after he submitted his 15 team list. Not wanting to go he placed those two teams on his list therefore cancelling any deals in place. I understand him wanting to stay to be with his wife, but as a pro athlete when your NMC expires you have no choice but to go where they send you. There is more to this story than what we have read on the surface. I’m sure he’ll be either traded to a team close by ( Isles, Devils) so he can stay at home, or depending on how things go work it out to play one last year with the Rangers then move on. I doubt a buyout is on the table.

Trouba signed this contract before Covid and before his wife got pregnant. Both of those things could have caused the delay in her residency finishing and who could have known about the impending global pandemic then. Part of why we got him in the first place was because he wanted to move to the states in part so his wife could do this. Where better than NYC could she have done it? It has some of the best medical centers in the world. We probably got a better deal from Winnipeg than we should have because of NYC being a draw and he used his leverage to get here. I don’t blame him for trying to use his leverage now to stay. The only way I’d blame him is if he refuses to go to the other 16 teams. The same way you couldn’t have predicted Covid is the same reason you have to go if a trade happens. Life is full of unexpected things. 6-9 months of long distance where half your games were already going to be on the road anyway is not the end of the world in an 80ish year life span. The only other way I can see this being palatable for both parties with him staying is for him to “not recover well” from the broken ankle he was supposedly playing on at the end of the year and go on LTIR. Rangers get the cap space they are desperate for and he doesn’t have to leave for a year.

I’m not a Rangers fan, far from it, but if he’s saying he’d refuse to report if he were traded to a team not on his list then he should take a massive pay cut or have his contract voided if I’m the Rangers brass. You wanna force our hand? We’ll force yours and save money in the process cause that was the whole reason they’re trying to move him is to get his albatross of a deal off their books and clear up 5 mil in cap space so it’d be fair for him to take 3 mil for this year after they void his contract. I understand his reasons but this is a business. I hope it doesn’t happen that way cause I want New York to be as bad as possible cause we play them often but that would be the most fair outcome to New York if he’s kaiboshing every potential deal.

As a Wings Fan, I'm good that he doesn't want to come to us. We don't need, or want anyone who doesn't want to be here. Let's play the Talented youngsters that we would've had to give up in order to get him here. We'll be fine. We've improved every year of the Yzerplan, and I think with a few Teams taking a step back, that we will be a Playoff Team this upcoming season. Yzerman wanted to build from within anyway, so let's see what we have.

I have zero issue with him enforcing his no trade clause. Although it is a little ridiculous trying to stop any trade if he has a limited no trade clause. In all honesty depending on what teams are on his list, he would be better off accepting a trade to a team like Detroit where number 1 they wanted him & number 2 is geographically not that far from NY. As someone who works in a hospital and is familiar with what exactly is involved in a residency program you really don't have much time for a personal life. So I can understand him wanting to maximize the time he does have with his wife. Although there is a giant flaw in that logic when it comes to blocking a trade. First if they trade him to a west coast team it becomes way harder to spend time with each other on either person's off day. Second this is the offseason for the NHL, and depending on what type of Residency she is involved in it should come to end around the end of the next regular season to start of the Finals. So really your only talking about 6-7 months not a full year of managing how you spend time together. Third once the regular season starts his time is dictated by the NHL schedule. I am sure her residency program is not going to bend over backwards to accommodate & coordinate with his playing schedule so control over that isn't going to change regardless of the team he is on. Fourth this relates directly to Detroit their ownership is dedicated to taking care of their players, so I would hope he would have at least been receptive to hearing what they have to say. He might be surprised to find how the ownership has deep ties & relationships with the medical community. Plus Michigan has more top 500 hospitals than NY .

There is the other issue though that has been rumored, which is if Trouba actually says I will not report to a team you trade me to, the Rangers will waive him and have him in the minors to begin the season which I feel like if it comes to that we enter the potential of them exercising a contract termination but we shall see.

The way I'm seeing this is when the player is playing well fan bases get into an uproar if they don't get resigned, but the moment they start to decline any sense of "loyalty" shifts away from the team needing to be loyal to the player to the player needing to be loyal to the franchise. "Loyalty" in that respect goes both ways. You can't expect that when it disproportionately benefits one party more than another.

It’s quite concerning how much of the NYR fanbase is getting blinded by the notion that “Trouba is the reason they didn’t win the cup”- sure they lost in ECF, which btw were mostly tight games, but that also means he captained them to that point. He’s blocking and hitting a crazy amount, he’s a warrior and leader, one of the anchors of the team. I feel this will be a popular trend with players moving forward. We just saw a few days ago, Stamkos.. a few years ago there were rumors he may never play again. Fast forward 3 years and he signs a 4 yr. 8 AAV deal w/Nashville. He’s 34 years old, going to a new team. If he doesn’t develop chemistry and put up at least 70 pts per season with Nashville, we will be hearing rumors about how the Preds are looking to trade him. Unfortunately, that’s how it’s become. Teams throwing money at whoever during free agency to “make a statement” when that statement bites you in the butt only a few years later. I know Trouba was traded to the NYR but they didn’t have to give him 8 mill. Don’t point fingers at Trouba or his wife. I’d love to see him go home and play for the Wings but he’s looking out for his best interest. Happy Wife Happy Life.
