I made components fail, watched the symptoms, and broke it down for you. This video is intended to help you troubleshoot.
Some Tech info. Not sure how useful it will be, but I recorded it anyway.
@ a room temp of 83F
Solenoid- 383ohms
Tray motor- 2.2kiloohms
Water sensor- 858kiloohms (Not sure about this. the sensor is a screw and a wire with a 1/2" air gap between them. The water completes the circuit.)
I'll keep poking around with the multi-meter. When I know more, I'll add more.

I realize this is an older video but I'm hoping you still read the comments once in awhile. I am a 73 year old woman and I walk with a walker, so taking my ice maker out to the sink and dumping the water out and taking it apart would not be on my list of fun things to do for the day. I had a problem with my over 1 year old ice machine, where it would work fine for a few weeks, then just stop making ice. After hitting buttons and saying a few choice words, finally after half a day or so would just start back up like nothing was wrong. But then it started happening more often. Today it stopped again. I watched about 4-5 videos but all of them would require me to have to work on it myself. I watched your video and one of the things you said was about the infrared not working and to hold the select button down for 10 or 15 seconds and I did that and it worked perfectly! I thought I would have to hold it down every time I wanted to get a tray of ice dumped into the basket but lo and behold as I'm sitting here it's on it's 4th pass and is still going. Thank you so much for your video and how you took the time to list symptoms and fixes for each problem because it saved this 73 year old on social security from having to buy another one. Bless You!

Thank you for making this video, it helped me identify what was wrong with mine (the pedal that rotates with the tray is pressing the rear switch, but I think the button is broken, I will have to find a way to replace it). Honestly I will never take for granted any "small" channels like yours, they have helped me many times when I needed to diagnose an issue with a car, machine, etc. Thank you once again so much for the time you took in making this video. Folks don't appreciate enough.

By far the best troubleshooting video I’ve seen. You explain each component, it’s function, symptoms of failure and added some tips to bypass error codes, in just 5 minutes. You even spoke clearly with no annoying background music. Do you need a job? Seriously, I looking forward for a service technician.

Wow .Great explanation 👍 I have one of these countertop ice maker bought it years ago at Target for around $89. My girlfriend liked it so much she found one and got one herself. About after a little over a year my ice maker failed I thought it could be the water pump considering it would cycle over and over and no water was pumped into the reservoir to make ice. About 9 minutes after my ice maker stopped working my girlfriend's ice maker stopped working too she told me she was going to throw it away I told her not to and to bring it to me in hopes that someday I would learn more about these ice makers and be able to make a repair on both of them. Here we are in the future looks like I got some pretty good tips on how to beyond the road to repairing my ice maker and my girlfriend's ice maker that would be wonderful. Thanks for this knowledge of countertop ice makers I enjoyed it tremendously sincerely Joey ⚓

Thank you for your research and sharing of knowledge. I can't imagine how many of these are in the landfill now because of a few simple components. My tray motor makes some sounds like it's trying but the tray doesn't move. Not sure why, guess I will have to see if I can change the motor or further examine the tray. Thanks again! Great work.

Thank you very much for a great troubleshooting video. This was very useful for my fixing my own ice making machine, an RCA branded one but just the same as the one on the video. My issue was “How to clean” it. Under the cover, that can only be removed by firstly removing the rear plastic panel around the unit (6 screws removed on the very bottom), then removing the lid that is held by 4 screws - all Phillips type screw heads. The interior of the unit and under the lid that is not normally accessible was full of grimy dirt and was totally disgusting thinking I had been drinking clean water for nearly 2 years by that time. I had to use Palmolive dishwater soap with a soft scrubbing sponge or other material to remove the grime. Even though I use a Brita filter to remove the bad taste of the fluoridated water, it does not remove copper nor cadmium, there was plenty of dark black spots all over the underside of the cover and sides of the white plastic water container and holder (some black stains were from the Brita filter carbon) but there was real grimy stuff from water drying and leaving behind dust and other particles (minerals and much garbage) that should not be in the water). After 15 minutes or more of scrubbing, using a toothbrush, soft scouring pad, and using a bit of vinegar. I also used dishwashing soap, but very little, just a few drops. Then after tons of water to clean out all the soap, my machine was clean again. My only question is how to clean the water filter as it will surely require cleaning or replacement. Judging by the black spots all over the underside of the lid and water holder the filter does not filter much of anything. One issue that arose is with the cooling or refrigeration tubing that must be raised slightly to remove the water tray. On putting the tray back I forgot to raise it a bit, I noticed that after making ice, some of the ice cubes were stuck together at the top with told me the refrigeration tubing was sitting in the water. To fix it,, I had to remove the cover again and raise the left side of the refrigeration tubing to get it out of the water. I only used my fingers to slightly lift the tubing. Using tools might damage the tubing. After that the round ice cubes were just perfect

Is that what I have to do to get at something called the water tube filter screen?? (which is not shown on the diagram in the manual, snarl)
@yeoshiyamamoto894
@yeoshiyamamoto894 3 жыл бұрын
@@aapple3749 I downloaded 4 videos on the Igloo Ice Maker and nobody mentions a water filter. The only water filter I know of is in the bottom of the water container. On mine it is in the very bottom right corner. I do not know if it is removable. It is not a micro-fibre filter. I believe it is intended to keep out some of the larger particles that might get into the water container. Our city water is never the best in terms of particulate matter. Thus it is recommended to filter the water using something such as the Brita (expensive). Also, refrigerate the water overnight before pouring it in the Ice Maker. That will help to make larger ice cubes if that is your desire and also a little faster. I saw one comment where a single hair got stuck in the water pump and it stopped working. Removing the hair fixed it. So the filter is not efficient.

Thanks for this vid; was very helpful to give insight how to fix our Igloo ice maker. For what it’s worth, we also suffered from a faulty switch @ 0:11. But after replacing switch, the Igloo failed again days later. This time the culprit was synchronous motor @ 2:20; the drum that rotates tray was so encrusted with rust-it would no longer rotate. A simple cleaning with wire brush was all it took. With the motor disengaged from the tray, we also figured out how to take the rotating tray completely out; the only benefit being able to access the ice making area for a thorough wipe down. Hope this helps.

Super rusty synch motor looks to be an issue on ours as well but having a hell of a time track'n down a "50TYZ-E" Synch Motor specifically rated at (120V, 50/60 HZ, 3.5 - 4.1 RPM, 3.5W) that doesn’t cost 1/2 of what I can get a new unit for :(

cbzpinch - Thanks, I’ll look again but when looking a few months ago, there were very few “50TYZ-E” synch motors available and of the few that were, they were going for almost $50, which seems absolutely ridiculous given every other near identical synch motor sells for around $15 or less. Tough justifying a (grossly marked up)$50 dollar part, when new makers can be had for about $100 and new-used can be had for under $75.

Very helpful tutorial! Thank you. I tested the two micro switches on my ice maker with a multimeter, and they work fine. The problem with my ice maker is that there is no water in tray; hence, there is no ice. The water pump works fine, but water doesn't go into the no-cracked ice forming tray, into the water reservoir instead. No leaking. Only the Add Water light on after each cycle even though plenty of water in the reservoir. Appreciate all your helps.

Hmm... I have no idea. The water sensors are pretty much just electrodes in the path of the water and the water completes the circuit. Maybe there's something on the top electrode preventing water from going into the tray and also insulating the electrode from the water. When I was making this video, and I got to the water sensors, there was some kind of cotton or hair and hard water build up on the top electrode. If there is something in the tube, it might cause the water to just trickle out, bypassing the tray and the top electrode.
@Blazfros
@Blazfros 6 жыл бұрын
The bottom sensor is just a screw poking into the path of the water.

Having opened the lid, I realized the ice forming tray doesn't catch water . Following your advice, I checked the intake tube, there is no obstruction. I wondered what the screw poking into the path of the water is doing in there. I was just about to remove it until I read your second message. Thanks! Where is the top electrode located? How do I fix the problem?
@Blazfros
@Blazfros 6 жыл бұрын
The top electrode should be right in front of the tube where the water comes out. It's just a chromed wire , maybe half an inch long.
@binhminh417

I found and cleaned the top electrode, but it didn't solve the problem-- the ice tray is still not receiving water. It seems like the pump is not producing enough pressure needed to push the water to reach the ice tray. As I attempted to feed water manually into the tray, crystal clear ice cubes came out 10-15 minutes later. Is the water pump a culprit or something else? Do you know how to reassemble the pump? Thank you for your help.

Mine has a problem at the stage when water is already filled and compressor has to kick in. Most of the times it doesn't start any more (tray goes back to default position), but if it starts then the machine works just fine until turned off. I can see side fan move a notch and stop. Could it be some starter capacitor not being able to hold charge to kickstart or something like that?

Thank you for this great video! My machine is making a grinding noise when the tray comes up to deposit the frozen cubes. Sometimes the tray doesn’t come up far enough and a cube gets lodged behind it causing the cycle to stop. If I catch it, I use a chopstick to get the ice cube out. The noise also happens just before the cubes drop off the metal pins. We replaced the two blue side switches last year. Do you know what would cause this, how to fix it? Thank you.

When a side switch (microswitch) fails, this can start considerable trouble you won't know is going on. When you replace one switch, replace the other one too. The bucket is rotated with considerable force by the motor. If the switch does not work reliably, the bucket can be forced against the rotational stops. I have found motor torque is so great it can crack the bucket near the motor coupling. When this happens, the bucket will leak and dribble water down over the motor bearing/shaft. A bucket crack can be sealed by skillful use of a 450F soldering iron on the inside of the bucket (a Weller station will adjust down to this temperature) and strengthened using a thin layer of epoxy on the crack on the outside of the bucket. (JB Weld epoxy for plastic is sold in auto stores.) This method prevents water from coming into contact with epoxy and gives added strength to the bucket itself. When the shaft (steel) and bearing (also steel!) rusts, it will freeze up and stop the motor. Along with installing new switches, you will need to free up the motor shaft. How is a frozen motor fixed? Bucket motors are not sold on the web anymore. I recommend Thrust Ion Penetrating Oil spray and use vice-grip pliers to force-rotate the motor shaft. Auto mechanics swear by Thrust. Not sold at Autozone or Advanced Auto. Thrust spray makes WD40 look worthless. Thrust foams up and will dissolve rust. All this can happen because of a $.99 microswitch failure!

Mine is leaking water from the bottom. It’s making ice as it should. What do you think it could be? The pump seems to make a funny sound at times.

Mine has green power light on solid. When the ice machine turns on, it sounds like something is stopping the water pump

I replaced my moter got cleaned my fan got my ice maker working but after 12 hours my ice melts in my machine stops the only way for me to get it running again is for me to manually stick my hand inside and lightly pull the ice tray towards me and that starts the motor up again and then it starts to run for another 12 hours. But I don’t know why it’s not running consistently

0:52 Top switch stuck on... My case- the screws were too tight! As I started to loosen the screw on side opposite the lever to test switch it popped open. Tightened it down and the switch stuck, backed screws out and klick! Left the screws loose a quarter turn, never had the issue again! Cheers!

I believe Mine has an issue with knowing the pump is working (It pumps a lot of water) but the "no water" light lights up and releases all the water in the tray. I've cleaned the pump, but only lasted a few days. now its intermittent....

I️ got a brand new igloo ice machine last week and it runs about two or three full cycles then it randomly shuts off and all the lights on top blink on and off together as of it lost power. I have tried 3 different outlets in my home, even the outlet that my two door refrigerator and freezer (with its own ice maker) is plugged into, and after about 20-30 minutes the machine stops operating and the lights blink. The machine is definitely off when the lights begin to blink because the process is halted completely, no matter where it is in the ice process, and all of the ice slowly melts until i notice the issue and press the power button back on. It then begins to make ice again for a couple cycles before shutting off again. Do you have any tips for this issue? I️ assume it is a power problem but why would my refrigerator of 20 years run without any issues but the portable ice machine won’t?

My problem is the the top reservoir will not stay in the up positions and the water just runs out. It cycles about 4 times and comes to rest in the down position.

Thanks for this video!! I’m sure this info will be helpful in the future. I am having an issue however that wasn’t covered, mine won’t stop making ice after the bin is full. Any thoughts on what could be the problem? Thanks!
