here's Owens recipe.
Hi Mav! I'm 8 years old and I watched your video with my Mom. I came up with a food recipe so let me tell you. So you need celery and onions and potatoes and oil and onion powder and garlic powder and parsley. First, chop the ingredients, simmer the ingredients in oil then add in water then add in instant cheese potatoes. It's potato soup!

Theres a certain feeling of comfort you get being in a safe environment so close to a dangerous one. Like being inside your truck bed in below zero weather in this case or even sometimes just riding passenger on a highway. You know your safe within the confines of the car.

When I was a kid, my father took us ‘rural’ camping in Maine. He was a tough blood and guts type of man. There were No bathrooms, no water supply just the nearby river.. Took over an hr to put half of an old army tent, together because for poles my father chopped his own from tree limbs. It got so cold that night my brother and I were shivering, so my father lined our cots with newspaper and that made all the difference! I miss that man and the all the things he could do.

At the tender age of 13, I was camping out in a lean-to with my fellow Boy Scouts in Fleischmanns, NY, when the overnight temperature dropped to -20F. My propane "grasshopper" stove wouldn't work because it was so cold. My relished Spagettios were frozen solid in the can. The scoutmaster had a grapefruit that was frozen solid, that sounded like a cannon ball when he dropped it on the wooden lean-to floor. I also learned that you are supposed to place your canteen inside of your sleeping bag at night. My aluminum canteen was split down the middle when the sun came up.

You need a boot window on pickup and camper with a rubber boot between the two. This will keep the cab and back warm. In keeping the cab warm (or at least above freezing) it will keep the heater core warm which in theory keep the engine somewhat warm.

I work in HVAC and one of the things learned over the time is that CO alarms only go off when the level of gas reaches a critical point (Detectors that display the level of CO in the environment are better, and will let you know if there is any at all, but the sensors also go bad over time. I'd recommend one with a built in battery, as they're designed to last as long as the sensor is, then you replace the unit once it dies.), but that CO also builds up in the blood over time by bonding to the hemoglobin and can cause low level poisoning through long term and repeated exposure. I'd recommend finding a way to stay warm that doesn't involve combustion if possible. Even if it involves heating rocks or water over a fire outside of your car then moving them into it. Looks like a fun trip though!

Ive been camping in the back of my truck for almost 35 years. Its warmer, keeps you safer. Heat is about the only trouble shooting issue, but Ive come up with a few different methods. I can even lock myself inside, and crawl into the cab from the back window, if danger was afoot, and drive off without exiting my vehicle. Best way to camp by far.

Funny you'd say this. I tent camped in the UP over the 2018/2019 New Year. It was well below zero. But our wood stove was properly ventilated and we had some air circulation on top of that. Worked great. Now, me as an idiot, forgot the -20 sleeping bag and then had the wrong socks. So...I was cold AF. But I survived and it was a hella memorable trip.

"Its so cozy knowing that I'm in a warm environment, so close to being cold." This is the exact reason I love camping in the winter. Awesome video! Just a couple tips if you want 'em: -Invest in a sleeping bag rated for -50C. A high quality one is double layered, can use a single layer for warmer nights. (Keep clothes for next day at feet; sleep with just a shirt & boxers to avoid moisture build-up.) -Get a quality Lamp Heater (will last you 8 hours with just one of those propane tanks you bought.) Hey Owen for cold weather camping what we did in the Army was wrap our wool blanket around our feet in the sleeping bag. We were told the feet are the body's thermostat and when they get cold it causes capillaries in the body to contract, restricting blood flow to preserve core temp. By keeping the feet warm we'd keep circulation up and stay warm at the expense of burning more calories.

I once did some pretty cold camping. Our Boy Scout troop had a tradition of camping at Starved Rock State Park in Illinois every Thanksgiving (Friday/Saturday/Sunday). One year, the "warmest" it got was 5 below and we were tent camping. We warmed up some by cutting a lot of firewood. And, of course, burning it. Once when we were out getting more firewood, the Scoutmaster made "Hunter's Stew" for us which we didn't expect. This is just typical meat, potatoes, and vegetables put into tin foil and cooked for a long time on the coals. Boy, was that a treat to come back to some nice hot food! There was also a nice warm lodge nearby, but our goal was to never cave in and go into the lodge. And we never did.

I know I'm late to this, but during the texas freeze, I was in Missouri and slept outside in a tent. Setting it up at 4pm I almost lost an ear, not kidding. It was -6F° for a low and a wind chill at -22F°. I only stayed warm by my sleeping bag and clothes I brought.

I never thought -19°F Fahrenheit was that bad. Turns out it is -28°C Celsius...
@jlondon1441
@jlondon1441 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, anytime Fahrenheit gets to negative numbers it’s freaking cold. Commercial walk-in freezers are supposed to stay around 0. On the scale, 0 is as cold compared to the freezing point as 64 is warm. -18 is just insane without real prep. His setup seems fine down to 0, but to go further needs just that extra push. Heavier insulation and/or better ventilation and a real heat source like a small wood stove, radiator or maybe a heat sink inside sleeping area that gathers heat from engine system during operation and dispenses overnight. It is a nice looking area with that fake grass and the way he did his roof.

I was camping in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia, on my closed cell foam mat, inside a Goretex bivvy bag. Got so cold the bag froze on the outsides, away from my body heat. We had to bash it over a vehicle bullbar in the morning to get it to fold up. Flinders nights easily go minus 5 C: good for camping.

Coldest night I ever spent in a vehicle was -50 (-70 with windchill) at Denali Training Area up near fort Greeley Alaska. We spent a month out there with the first week and a half living out of our HMMWVs. The heaters in those things barely work as it is and we had to keep turret hatch open because someone was up on the gun at all times pulling security. That let the little bit of heat we had out. When you were in the driver seat you could warm your fingers up a bit but the back two were just ice boxes. Shocked to this day no one lost fingers or toes.

You can buy a hose that fits a 20 pound tank to connect to whatever, or even a hose that connects to both a 20 pound and a little one, and you can refill the little one by connecting them and holding the big one upside down to let the liquid flow through.
