The crazy thing is shippers are paying less to ship products but they sure aren’t lowering the price for the consumer when they purchase products!

I work for a manufacturing company and we give very generous discounts. Whenever I see a distributor or company reselling our products, I’m absolutely floored. We don’t charge for freight, only the cost of fuel and whatever we pay for shipping via UPS, etc, we charge the customer the same amount. I’m not sure what’s going on

Course they are not lowering their product price. They pay whatever they want to move their freight , because we are Fkn stpds for accepting their crumbs . I don’t blame brokers or shippers , I blame truckers for bending their knees and taking it .
@metaparcel
@metaparcel 10 ай бұрын
You're trying to play the blame game. You want a bogey man bc you know inflation has increased prices for raw and finished materials and goods but it's easier to say that some sort of conspiracy to pay truckers less exists. Those shippers and distribution chains and manufacturers are all hit with slowing demand. What are you going to do? You're the type that ends up believing some kooky theory that the government is purposefully slowing the economy or some such nonsense. When I see a fool like you I just roll my eyes because most times your chain of logic leads to other equally senseless assumptions and conclusions about how the world works. The sad part is you represent how the average person who doesn't question themselves thinks. It's astounding.

Yeah, if you can manage to do that, lay low and secure your trucks. Then when mega-carriers have eliminated all the competition and raise their prices and start demanding that their clients submit to genetic screening to get carrier services, ambush them by offering slightly lower prices and no genetic screening or any other collection of personal info.

But the freight isn't making money like it was. So wasting time energy and fuel isn't beneficial to the smaller carriers and medium companies. So a lot of them are reducing the employees and laying off less paying accounts.

Disagree! I've been around the trucking business all my life, dad, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, neighbors friends have been in it, the whole deal, I'm 58 years old, I've seen many people including myself decide after driving someone else's truck that we were gonna get our own trucks and show everyone how it's done and everyone I know ended up in the same situation pretty much broke with a bunch of scrap iron to get rid of, there's a very small to no profit margin in the trucking business, it was harder than hell to start back then and it's gotten harder, it's a rich man's game, and by rich I mean millions of dollars and then I wouldn't advise trucking business there's better businesses to get into, there's companies with 100's of trucks that are bailing out and selling out, what does that tell you? What chance do you think you got competing with companies with billions of dollars, I'm making a good living driving for a mega carrier and I sleep good.

That’s why I say that small trucking companies need to come up with a different plan or business model. In your example, Walmart put the local 5&10 out of business. Instead of selling a little bit of a lot of things, specialize in a specific market segment which the mega carriers won’t.

Trucking, from my experience, is always changing. Changing for the worse. I started as a owner operator in 1992 with a lease purchase deal with Mayflower. All I made was a truck payment for a year. So I left Mayflower after a year and got the truck refinanced and leased on with Heartland Express. I started out at .81 cents a mile. Everything was paid for by Heartland except for my bobtail insurance. It started out good but after a year I could see the changes and they weren’t for the good. Year after year it never got better.

The ones with thirty years experience are the ones who are least likely to understand the ramifications of that flat tire OOS. Back in their day, you had a flat, trooper would usually cite you, or give a warning, and driver would go get the flat fixed. End of story. Old school mentality. Younger inexperienced drivers dont understand that the CSA score affects their employers insurance cost, and employers ability to obtain good paying freight. With all the FMCSA regulations, truck driving now qualifies as a Profession. Lawyers have to learn about roughly the same amount of civil procedure rules as truck drivers have to learn FMCSA operating rules. Lawyers are considered professionals, so ought truck drivers to be considered. Our industry will always remain second tier as long as we dont recognize, and realize the regulatory buden that we labor under. When we get busy understanding our relationship to the FMCSA, instead of job hopping from one crappy corporate seat to another, that is when truck drivers will "become" "professional" truck drivers. There is no glory in doing the tenth most dangerous job in the country, while being underpaid and abused by corporate, and the flunky dispatchers they hire, that manage to keep everyone in a boiling state of confusion. What was the name of that school that teaches basic logistics? That most dispatchers never heard of? Anyone? The next step that is coming will be the hiring of foreign truck drivers at even lower rates per mile. That will be interesting to see how well the FMCSA deals with all the accident statistics involving foreign drivers who cant be bothered to obey those pesky traffic signs, lights etc... Roll on brothers, and keep the rubber sidedown.
@TerryeToombs
@TerryeToombs 10 ай бұрын
Those foreign drivers are already here. My husband has already run into a couple at truck stops that couldn't tell their a$$hole from a hole in the ground. One was trying to take a tire off and somehow hit my husband's truck. At least he knocked on the door and let him know - he knocked a light off of my husband's tanker. SMH. Glad we didn't have to pay for that repair!

Also, I gotta add - TMC is one of those carriers that tries its best to masquerade itself as a "professional" outfit when in reality they are as mega as Swift. Your shipper will likely come running back to you the moment one of their rookies loses a load from lazy securement or winter weather wrecks. I'm saying this as a former TMC driver too. I fell for their bull when I was fresh out of CDL school and easily one of the best career moves I ever made in this industry was leaving them for tankers. Hell, I've even taught a couple of their drivers how to chain up tires north of Davenport WA because I already knew they didn't teach that in Ankeny.

The idea of being 'professional' no longer matters. The only way we can start to fight back against these mega carriers is by calling them out when and where we can. You're effectively helping the mega carrier by not letting people know which major carrier is out here undercutting small companies. I just now watched this. He is here in Texas. I would like to let him know that if he is willing, he could apply at US Autologistics (USAL) and learn to haul cars. USAL will not mind if you have your own authority and get your own truck then contract back to them. As a company driver you will make $110k to $180k per year depending on how hard you want to run and if you feel the need to be home every weekend and a couple of times a week. Great benefits! 3 paid weeks off plus 2 personal days and a floating holiday from the beginning. The guy that owns SOS started with USAL to learn car hauling. He did it for 2 years and then bought his own trucks. He lets other owner operators run under his authority and dispatches them the loads they want. The first year he keeps 13%, second year he keeps 9%, and third year and there after he keeps 6%. He has 18 owner operators now and a couple of company drivers including still running loads with his own truck. He is grossing around $700k a year after starting 5 years ago. Just an idea

Unions are that buffer between big corporations and employees. If you look at the history of work place, the unions have traditionally kept wages high along with benefits. If you look at giant corporations that have unions they are usually doing well financially. Yellow is a victim of bad business practices and the economy failing. Public perception is controlled by who owns the news media. Those giant news conglomerates are no different then places like UPS. They don't like unions either because they have to treat people fairly and these giant corporations don't practice fair business unless they're checked. It's all about the mighty dollar. Not the backs of the people they abuse to gain market share. Like em or not unions are needed. Business associations are needed. They protect the interests of the people. Money will ruin large corporations.
