I review, breakdown and explain True Detective Night Country Episode 5. I discuss Season 4 which stars Jodie Foster as Liz as we saw Hank be revealed as a corrupt officer and his death coming at the hands of his son Pete. I react to the ending, the discovery of the cave where Annie K went to, it’s connection to Season 1, the Tuttle cult, the meaning of the spiral symbol, why Evangeline sees people pointing at her and the case of the scientists and Raymond Clarke. I also give my theories and predictions on episode 6, the season finale.

I'm going to go a bit Danvers on you and say I think you're asking the wrong questions 😂. Some of the "conclusions" or answers you're looking for don't need to be answered, eg it doesn't really matter who killed Wheeler. It shows us that Liz and Evangeline both had reason to do it, and they each kept their mouth shut. It shows us that they refused to walk away from a man they had witnessed beat his partner to death. It shows us that even people who are supposed to be good have their breaking points. Does knowing who did it drive the plot? No. So I doubt we'll get an answer. Also, does it matter what happened to Liz's son/husband? It rationalizes her prickly exterior and shows us a reason why she's slept with all the men in Ennis. But does it impact the case? No. True Detective is both an exploration of a case and the detectives life experiences they bring to that case. I think the writes don't owe us an explanation of what's happened to the detectives, but they do owe us closure on the case. I'm going to fail miserably, but questions I want to ask are: What is so valuable in the ice caves that Tuttle is willing to kill over it? Are Navarro's visions connected to her ptsd? Are we to infer from Rose's comment on separating spirits and mental illness that Evangline's ark is to realize she has ptsd? Are the stillbirths related to the absence of midwives and/or the polluted water? Is this a plot by Tuttle to reduce the innuit population and Annie found out about it? Is that what the scientists were really studying? Thankful for this channel

I think people overlook the fact that Peter has an infant son in Ennis, who drinks Ennis water, and who is Peter's blood. I think a more empowering angle is that Peter thought his father just chose the wrong side for their family. Which goes back to, does Hank view his indigenous grandson as the kind of blood he values? We never see them together. Is all blood, blood?

Bringing Pete his childhood skates says he knows how old Pete’s son is ‘only four years old’, so he at least knows about him even if we don’t see them together. Kayla is the bigger pain, she doesn’t show she cares about the bad water or that Pete might break open a case of abuse to native women! Instead she’s a whiner.
@edd5883
@edd5883 3 ай бұрын
@@judywright4241 Skating seems more important to Hank than it does his grandson, who he is unwilling to go see despite living in the same isolated town. I also think Pete could be a better communicator and to blame the relationship solely on Kayla seems unfair. They clearly have an unhealthy relationship. I do feel bad for Pete, though. What is he supposed to do? What actual work is there? It seems like just the mine, some people living off of the land, and the police. And a handful of scientists who don't actually live in the town. Pete and Kayla live in two different worlds. Kayla is indigenous, and Pete is a white settler. Pete can never truly be indigenous, but the way he treats everyone, especially Navarro, proves that he is the most sympathetic character in the show.

Then he’ll send a text from his dads phone, to himself and possibly set it up as a s*cide… Or even somewhat go for the truth- as far as him busting his dad killing the guy and so he shot him. Tho idk that will be it. I think he will definitely have it figured out, at the same time the ladies figure out Annie’s death and then it’ll either be a showdown with them at the end… Or…they’ll all be holding all of the secrets! Idk, all I know is he’s smart and will do it right. Course there will be all of those looks at the end…when they make you left to wonder who is going to be the one who talks. Too many don’t like each other in this one- so *turning could be anybody. But possibly Pete could turn on Liz even! I mean- if they’re going for shock value…THAT would be it. I just hope Pete doesn’t get a divorce text, where it sends him over the edge and he does himself off too. 😮

When Hank said, "I'm not a killer," I knew that's exactly what he was going to do. Shooting Heis in front of Liz meant he would have to shoot her too. He was faced with a tough decision but I think her repeating “think” in his ear wasn’t necessary and actually took away from his choice in the scene. The scene would be better for Peter if she wasn’t “manipulating” him in that moment.

@@sayhellotomylitleful Liz is tough and no-nonsense with everyone but I don't see her treating Pete like shit or ruining his life. Many cops get divorced bc of their work schedules. If I were Liz, I would have said, "He just shot an unarmed man in the back and will have to shoot me bc I was a witness..." Pete figured it out, but it must have been torture to shoot his own dad. His dad even admitted he was on the take with his admission that "I didn't kill her, I just moved the body..." Dumping them in the ocean just means the Coast Guard will find the bodies.

I don't think Evangeline Navarro is a bad person.Her name literally means "bearer of good news" I believe these spirits are pointing at her hauntingly in a way to say "its up to you to solve our murders". Like an avenging angel. When Danvers told her that the Annie case was closed due to Connelly shutting it down, it was as if Navarro was throwing the curse of the hauntings onto Danvers. We don't necessarily know who Wheelers dead wife was truly pointing at. Could possibly be pointing at her living husband as if to say "he did it, get him" and so Navarro being intolerable to abuse against women, Avenged the wifes death. I believe Danvers knew Hank was following her around and had a gut feeling he would show up at her house. And quite possibly gave Pete the key to the shed so he would be around when and encounter would come so that Pete could truly see the kind of person his father was. My Hunch was right that Hank was involved in the Annie K case somehow. I don't believe Hank when he says he isn't a killer. Danvers proved to Pete that his father isn't as dense as he plays himself to be. That he had been tracking what Danvers, Navarro and Pete were doing the entire time. Lying to them all the whole time. Navarro even confronted Hank about his withholding information on the Annie K case. Danvers shut him down after threats to speak about the wheeler case. I think Pete finally saw for himself who his father was after his father lied about what he was doing when Pete showed up to stay after being kicked out by Kayla. And what is up with Kayla? So mad about Pete working so much. Seemingly jealous of Danvers taking up so much of his time. Is it really Danvers she has a problem with? Or is it the Annie K case? Does she have a problem with him investigating the scientists murders? I am still trying to put my finger on what is up with her. Right now she is just an annoyance to me. Like she has no care about the murders at all. Truly looking forward to the finale! I hope its more than an hour!

Wheeler was the drunk driver who killed Danvers husband and son. Twist & shout, Holdens favorite song was playing in their car when it came to rest. Wheeler had been tormenting Danvers, twisting the knife and she shot him when he triggered her via that evil whistle of twist and shout. Evangeline can see snippets of the future in her visions. Her Mom, Julia, Soldier, Holden are all trying to guide her to the poisoning of the water and animals. The towns women staged an emergency of some kind. They cut the power to the Tsalal station and did something to draw the scientists out of Tsalal. They lead them to the night country. They drowned. Then froze. I new Hank was dirty. They never say what happened to Pete’s mom. How do we know Hank did not get rid of her. It’s weird that his mom left him with the abusive Hank. What gave Hank away to me from the first episode was his hostility towards Danvers then his passive aggressive behaviors when given a direct order. Secondly when he tells his catfish that he “still has some money” for the catfish’s prescription. Where did he get a settlement? JG Wentworth? 😂 Pete killed Annie K. I think Hank made him do it because he’s a monster. And wanted something to hold over Pete. I think Pete was all up on Danvers & Navarro because he was looking to relate to others who did the same thing he did. But he was trying to figure out which one of them did the shooting. Annie’s bf is just crazy. Out of his mind after losing Annie. I think Annie was pregnant. Go back to the trailer scene next to Annie’s golem is a teddy bear and a human baby golem. I think he was trying to bring them back to life. The spiral was on the ceiling of the trailer to simulate Annie below the night country/under the ice. Pete will use Lee to help him with the bodies to force Danvers to help him with Annie. Why else would he use Lee if not to blackmail Danvers for some reason.

Nothing made sense in that episode. And as an attorney, the ending scene is actually laughable. There is nothing to “cover” because the shooting was evidently justified. The fact that three cops together can’t even begin to think of a reason to justify the shooting is absurd. Moreover, by “covering up” this nonexistent crime, they also get rid of any evidence of Hank’s corruption and culpability.

I think you're missing the part about Navarro believing their boss - Connelly - is corrupt and in the pocket of the mining company who she believes is behind the murder. So it's not entirely unreasonable for her not to trust the police to investigate. She's also not exactly a super intelligent character. She's impulsive and reckless - so to cover up the incident doesn't really seem like a stretch for her character to me. She also has a history of being able to influence Danvers into going along with what she wants to do. The only character it makes no sense for would be Peter. But that's only if you believe he's a straight shooter like the show portrays. If he's secretly a villain and was part of the murder, it makes sense why he would want to cover up the incident.

1) Anne K was dating Raymond in secret. She would just be using him to get information on what she was digging. While she had her own reasons to be investigating what the mine was doing, she would have her own boyfriend or Raymond his own GF. As it came from her, so she might have had a boyfriend. So she might have being murdered by passion, reason why she got stabed multiple times and not by the mine or an agent from the mine itself. 2) Being Navarro the person who "knows more about the Anne K case", I'd like to point that her relationship with Qavvik doen't get me at all. So in my humble opionion, she approached him to investigate him as we have seen she sneaking into him at least twice. I don't think he's just a support character to her. So he could be the Anne K boyfriend who discovered her relationship with Richard and killed her by passion. Simple as that. If this is true, the mine decided to drop her body to everybody see it and understand as a message. They just liked it. 3) The two womans from the factory will play for sure a role in the final episode. But I think they are connected to the Turtle cult.

he only shot him when he aimed his gun at Danvers. Pete was really wanting her to admit she killed wheeler…which means she didn’t…and we’ll know as soon as it’s obvious whoever is left handed- which I’m almost wondering if it’s Kate.
@TheBerylknight
@TheBerylknight 3 ай бұрын
@@missymarie2698 I thought Wheeler was the one who was left handed. It was relevant because when Danvers and Navarro staged the suicide they made it appear like someone who was right handed did it, because they didn't know Wheeler was left handed. That's how Peter figured out the crime scene was staged. Kate is barely even a character, and was basically just used as plot device to show how Hank was involved in covering up Annie's murder. So if she turns out to be the secret villain that's going to be incredibly lame. I think it's more likely she's just your generic corrupt executive character sweeping corporate dirt under the rug. She just doesn't have enough development to make any kind of impact as a surprise reveal. And with all the insane reviews this show has been getting, it better finish strong.

@geekishgir
@geekishgir 3 ай бұрын
Wheeler was left handed but they didn't know it. Wheeler's "suicide" was by a right handed person's shot to the head. The marks on his wife were from left to right so they flipped the pictures to make it look like a right handed person hit her. At least that is what I think. They didn't realise til after they examined her marks that he had been left handed. So it would point to Liz being the one who shot him as she was on the right.

This is the first that I’ve heard you mention that her partner was involved and now I’m thinking about how Navarro has had visions of the one eyed bear. Are there other clues / references to this? Did this cause the rift between Navarro and Liz more so than the Wheeler case? Did you explore this theory in an earlier video?

I believe Annie did not love Clark & he was a means to an end. This is why she desperately wanted to go with her friend to the site; & then wanted to keep the relationship secret (from the town, the village, & also the other researchers & mining co). I believe this became obvious to Clark and out of heartbreak, he killed her. I believe out of guilt, he killed his comrades. The trailer shows how he dealt with her guilt. He made a shrine to her, went crazy, cried all the time. I believe they all knew of her death and his grief, & that’s why they ignored him. He eventually killed them all. I also believe after he killed her, he kept her tongue; and that’s why it was found at the facility. I believe her tongue was cut before she was moved. I also wonder if Kate told Clark Annie’s true motive & he snapped, or did Clark go to Kate afterwards and she recruited Hank to move her! Also, I thought Otis just got shot in the shoulder

A convenient episode filled with relevations to further the plot. The boss somehow knows wheeler case is sus to keep things copasetic.The dad cop doubles down on his corruption to be so sloppy to confront in a house kill a possible witness and then say just so you know i didnt kill annie k i just moved her. His son kills him as he thinks his son wouldn't? I mean the convenient factor in this episode was blatant. It seems the show relies on spooky imagery and slight mystery wrapped in social/family dynamics. The mystery of the show really is what's the endgame? The case of the show really has been minimized and at this point seems to not even matter. Most likely just a show about corruption and marginalization and gentrification of minorities wrapped in family dynamic drama.
