Like many others, we've encountered potato diseases, cold and wet soil issues, drought, mold, and more. However, we're determined to cultivate the best potato suited for our unique microclimate, perfect for the rough, cold conditions here in the north. After harvesting our very first small potatoes from our own true potato seeds last year, this video follows year two of testing, growing and refining the best unique potato varieties for our smallholder homestead. We also gets a lot new potato-fruit / potato-berries so the project is moving on for year 3 as well.

Difficult weather in Ireland last year for growing potatoes,I am trying to get my seed potatoes planted early this year,I must watch tgis trial you are doing,Siv,thank you,hugs,Fiona

It is as if every single year has different difficult potato weather here as well now, so I hope and believe that natural selection and potato genetics are more important than ever in terms of food security for the coming years🙂This year we enter year 3 of the potato the experiment, so nice that you are following along☺️ Wishing you a really good week❤️

@@wildandwoolly Last March and July were very wet here in Ireland and there has been so much rainfall over the past year, but at least winters are showing signs of returning, if eveeyone lives more like our ancestors did, without every comfort, gadget and luxury and is kinder to nature and is less wasteful, maybe we can save the wildlife, fish and be able to grow vegetables, technology is bringing laziness and waste and a throwaway, wasteful culture and there is so much loss of biodiversity, it is frightening, I try to do my best, but all the LED lights on newer so called greener cars and the comfort technology in them is lethal for man and nature, cyclists ..xx

Amen to that❤️We just have to try to do our very best to keep our own consumption, garbage and carbon footprint as low as possible. A smart person said that nature used to do well because no creature used more energy in one year than the sun gave in one year..☺️

I am putting soot from my chimney on top of the seed potatoes when I plant them to try to prevent slug qnd eelworm damage

Listen to this lovely cottager interviewed by Geoff Hamilton, talking about putting soot from his chimney on top of the seed potatoes after putting farmyard manure firstly,lots of potatoes to be planted here this week,Siv, I kept the soot in a bucket after the chimney swept my chimney of my rayburn solid fuel cooker in january,getting into a busy time of the year,hugs Fiona

@@wildandwoolly I am using my goat and chicken manure and then the seed potato and then soot on top, God bless the work this week with good weather,I must watch your video too on your seed potatoes.Have a happy week,xx
