Nice job been a farrier for thirty years but I put in eight nails and use edge of rasp put line under clinches then clinch shoes stay tight longer

Just a quick question I have seen other farriers pulling out the old nails then taking off the old shoe is this something that is personal preference..

How do you know where the white line is when nailing the shoe?This is something that I am struggling with can't see the whiteline when shoe is over it.
