So to everyone coming by watching this video I know it's old, but I can guarantee that the tape mod does indeed work. For note I did not use painter's tape, just a roll of normal papery, super unsticky masking tape I had lying around the house, for 3 layers on the back of my pcb. I also had individual 0.5mm pe switch pads applied to my whole pcb for full transparency, but those didn't really do that much to be honest. Trying it myself I can instantly hear why the mic has trouble picking up the difference in sound, as the difference it makes occurs in the ambient sound of the keypress, but doesn't drastically change the actual sound of the top and bottom out. But it creates a deeper sounding board as there are more low frequencies being created. So the mic will still pick up the higher frequencies of the keycaps topping out, which creates that "pop" sound, but will have more trouble picking up the overall rounding out of the rest of the sounds created by the board. Adding in the case foam to the board thankfully didn't change the nature of the sound, just the volume of it. Even if you're skeptical, it takes all of half a minute to open up the back of your board and barely 5 minutes to put on like 3 layers of tape. Try it yourself and see how it goes.

The difference is way better in real life. the mic isnt picking up the lower frequencies

Maybe add 1-2 more layers, or keep the foam, the difference is very very subtle. Sounds the same but "cleaner", However people who are not at least a bit into custom keyboard wont notice

As i see it, stock bottom foam already fit tightly to the pcb. does tape mod make it loose?

yeah, de-holee mod your stabs and just use BDZ. It will get rid of that mushiness, nerf the rattle just as well, and give you back your upclacks.

Either need more layers of tape or need to use painters tape cause it sounds the same. painters tape is thicker with less adhesive and a reason why it’s the one used the most for tape mod.

It sounds more muted, like it resonates less. I think i like it more without on this one, but on some others that are louder higher pitched i would do it to bet a deeper sound.

Sounds a bit different but not much of a difference. Tape mod actually works cause I did that on my keebs but you need more layers.

More layers of tape and dampening the metal on metal contact would make it sound way better.

wait when doing this mod do you pit the foam and tape in? Or do you only just put tape and no foam

How about tape mode combined with foam? Do that sound test as well

tape mod is the best mod but sometimes switches randomly pop out

2 layers isn't enough for masking tape, need 4 or 5. Generally this mod helps cut out the high frequencies from the switches.

Nice vid man, just wondering did you use the screws that were meant for the pcb I think there were 9 of them? If you did,did you put it before you did the tape mod or after?

i did 5 layers. i have no foam and still no lube. 5 is what i would max at or maybe 6 but i am still yet to try 6 but even 3 made a difference.

You're supposed to do both tape mod and foam, they complement each other

It made mine louder. Almost seems like the sound echo's off the tape, rather than get dampened by the foam.

it didn't make that big of a difference because you're meant to do at least 3 layers of tape but more like 4 recommended

I did this mod to my akko 3068, 5 keys dont work but like it sounds a lot better so meh

youre using wrong type of tape therefore theres no difference. Tape mod reffers for thicker "eletrical" tape not regular one youre stuck on
