Hi, this is the 4th video in the Sony Walkman series. In this one I try and repair a faulty Walkman WM-FX10 which is noisy and has vibrations.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

Vince, TronicsFix, Louis Rossman... These channels are one of the few things that seems to relax me at this point in my life. Watching someone take a broken item, troubleshoot it, and then fix it in various ways gives me a really good sense of satisfaction somehow. Keep buying broken things to fix, and I'll keep watching!

Love the vid. I used to repair boomboxes and tape decks and in the 80% motors were trashed. Noise was not always the issue but speed stability. When this motors have long play hours the brushes start to worn out. This produces a change in the motor internal resistance that the speed controller is trying to compensate to adjust the speed. Once the internal resistance starts show variations, motors are done because the speed controller cant compensate or it falls outside the adjust range. YOU CAN lube the motor. Most of the stress is taken by the exposed bearing, it is made out of bronze but it is like spongy structure, they are supossed to be "self lubed and maintenance free". Well, you can help the situation using a very fine oil and spray the bushing. The rest of the noise can be, the internal bushing or the brushes that are badly worn out. In any case, the walkman of the vid play perfect. This is the only thing that counts. Belts are CRITICAL in walkmans to stabilize the speed. Walkmans have POOR W&F figures since they tend to use plastic flywheel, with NO WEIGHT AT ALL. How the managed to make thing work ?. The speed controller is fast enough to react and compensate instant variations produced by the clutches and iddlers. They perfected this so much that a big flywheel was not longer needed. In mid 70, A proper tank from AKAI had WORSE figures in W&F that JVC-KD-X series using a boombox type mechanism that was almost a toy. Speed controller had improved a lot in 10 years

I have fixed some of these clip-on-case plastic-save-production-costs-to-the-max walkmans, most of the problem is the flexibiity of the plastic and the age of the plastic. I had one that scratched one of the wheels against the case when using a little force or change orientation. Could be result of temperature, environment, properties of the plastic has changed/stretched over time. At another one the belt was perished, so need another belt. Always replace the belt, it was clearly to see you need to change the belt. And when you do this clean everything and lubricate where necessary, including the spindle/rotor of the motor. Do this when everything of the mechanism is operating, you wil get better results, you can hear the difference. Spindle/rotor of the motor the same, use aerosol with silicone oil. Also works great with noisy laptop/computer fans. Clean any spill afterwards. When you still get a high noticable wow and flutter (wobbling sound), remember that the age of the plastic (most of it is made out of plastic) and there is no weight (iron) attached to the flywheels to compensate fluctuations or to stabilize speed. I added some bolt rings (with use of striong slow drying glue and center it in the middle when spinning and align it on the outside of the ring with a screwdriver on fixed position) to the flywheels. Let it dry and try agian. Difference is remarkable, only just a few grams will help to get a better constant speed. These walkmans are made to a maximum revenue price point, they can be pretty good however depends on condition, usage and environment influences. There are a lot things that can go wrong, it is not the electronics, it is the quality of plastics they have used and that most of the unit is made out of this.

Also, parts of the mechanism can make noises in certain positions. Be sure any mechanism rotating parts are oiled (those with bearings) and especially the capstan shafts. (The shafts the big wheels inside turn.) Other parts may have worn loose. They are not replaceable. Some can be fixed with tiny washers and other tricks. I have even drilled them out and inserted tiny bearings made from brass tubing or salvaged from junk mechanisms.

This flexible steel thing around the motor is a shield. Without it the motor could interfere with the audio circuits. This walkman is not bad at all. I had one. It does not get slower and slower as the battery is being used. It maintains smooth speed and then cuts out when there is not enough power.

Oil it with CRC 2-26 or any light lubricant that is good for electrical stuff and then mostly the problem of noisy or badly running motors will be solved. Make sure to get it in both ends and so it can work into the bearings and the commutator and brushes.The light oil and some plastic grease can be used carefully on other parts of the Walkman too. This is a good fix for motors in CD and DVD players also because often the motor will get stiff sluggish and the disk won't run up to speed. Nothing to loose for a try anyhow..

I repaired a Kenwood KX-520 Tapedeck where pretty much everything was misaligned, parts bent, all transistors pretty much close to "I better change that. right and left channel's hfe aren'T even close...", but it had one thing going for it, a motor you could take apart completely. After I cleaned and lubed everything and put things back together again, the motor was actually running way too fast, free'd from all the dried in grease and dirt. I guess that meant "success". I really like those old devices that were still meant to be serviced ^_^

It is common for a unit that has been sitting for decades the bearings are probably dry. A needle oiler can be carefully slid under the pulley and a drop applied. Sometimes it brings them back. Clean the pulley off afterward. The internal bearing often survives because it is not exposed to the air. When that doesn't work a new motor is indicated. Universal motors are available from several electronics parts houses. Try www.alibaba.com/showroom/cassette-player-motor.html for a start.

There are two general types of motors. Motors with the coil on the spindle and the magnets around the outside. These require brushes(what you call probes in the video). The brushes are required to give the coil electricity by brushing against metal plates set in a circle around the spindle. Motors with brushes tend to be used with higher voltages or power. The other kind of motor has magnets on the spindle and a coil round the outside and doesn't require brushes as there is no gap to bridge to supply power to the coil. These kind of motors are used in low voltage and low power applications such as the tape decks. Another thing you call the variable resistor a potentiometer which it very well may be. The only difference to a variable resistor and a potentiometer is the setup. A variable resistor setup uses two contacts one of the outside contacts and the center contact which is called a wiper. These are connected in series(in line) with the part and alters the current to it. Potentiometers use all three contacts the outside two are connected to the power rails(the +V and the 0V) and the wiper(center connector) is connected to the part. This is called a parallel connection and alters the voltage to it.
@Mymatevince

Thanks again for the great info. I will try and remember to look for 2 or 3 contacts in future as I often come across potentiometers and variable resistors and I didn't know the difference :-)

@@MymatevinceThey will all have 3 contacts it's just that on a variable resistor setup one of the contacts will just go through a blank hole in the board or soldered to a copper pad which doesn't go anywhere. They don't actually physically remove the contact they just don't use it.

the motors on these later devices are really damn annoying :/ For a lot of the tube motors like on the TPS-L2/WM-3 the motor can easily be disassembled to clean and lubricate. These however are sealed shut, tried dismantling one a while back to no avail. Clearly reparability and maintenance was not really a priority over at Sony at the time.

The regular click-click-click toward the end of the video is probably the tape itself as opposed to the Walkman. Those Hi-Tech tapes were cheap Hong Kong made cassettes of very poor quality. They're OK for testing but the mechanical parts in those tapes weren't made with any precision, to the point where most of them would jam and self-destruct after a couple of months of use even back in the day. You could hear the very noisy wind/rewind as well -- the tape often doesn't wind itself consistently around the hubs, so if you want to continue using the tape I'd play it back from start to finish (not rewind, use play) and this should keep it quiet. Or, just buy a better blank tape. They're only a couple of quid new on eBay and will be a more reliable measure of speed, wow and flutter, sound quality etc.

Your best bet for 1 or 2 3v small motors is probable AliExpress. Alibaba would certainly also have them but generally there you have to order in bulk. You can remove the pulley with a pair of needle nose pliers, it's best to gently heat the pulley/spindle with something like a hairdryer or heat gun on low as the metal expands making it easier to remove. Then use measuring calipers to measure the width of the spindle and order one with the same spindle diameter. Also a good idea to order a motor as close to the original height/diameter as you can get. They're dirt cheap on AliExpress, only a couple of pounds.
