Hi, this 'trying to fix' video shows me attempting to fix a Xbox One S console which only displays in 480p. Unfortunately 720p, 1080p and 4K is not working. This was purchased from eBay for £96 UK ($125 US).
These 2 videos helped me out tremendously.
Andrew Paul - • XBOX One S Black Scree...
TronicsFix - • Xbox One S Teardown - ...
Apologies for the spelling mistake in the title, I didn't want to upload it again for a missing 'a' in purchasing :-)
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

Hi Vince, Just watched this through from start to finish - excellent job on the repair! I was rooting for you all the way through that solder job and I was grinning like a Cheshire cat when it all fired up at the end! There's no better feeling when it works. As you say in the video for QFN packages I recommend a tacky flux rather than the liquid as it helps to hold the ICs in place during rework and as it also has a wider rework window it sticks around longer to enable you to get it nicely in position rather than it just evaporating off before it's done its job. Liquid flux tends to make the IC float when the heat is applied which is why I think you were having some issues getting it to initially site. A few ways to combat that are to use slightly less liquid flux and start the air wand from further away from the IC until you stop seeing the flux pool around the outside of the IC. At that point you can start to get closer in and surface tension by that point will hold the IC in place while the solder reaches reflow temperature. The easiest way overall is to use a tacky flux paste - I highly recommend Amtech NC-559-V2-TF for IC rework - you can grab some from the official distributors in the UK (Insat Int.) at bga-reworking.co.uk - I'd only buy from here as there's more fake stuff than legit floating around the market these days which is a shame sadly. Many thanks for the shout-outs in the last few vids and as always bud if there's anything I can do to help with advice or if you're unsure of anything whatever it may be then just give me a nudge. All the best, Andy.

Thanks Andy for watching it, and the nice comments, all the tips and the offer of help. It was your video that I linked in the description and also the one you did on the Xbox One X - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mr9-f6WK35PNoas.html that gave me the confidence. When you go into the minute details in your videos that others brush over it makes people like me (novice) understand things a lot better and you are very calming to watch. A prime example of this was the Xbox One hard drive reformat. I didn't have a clue but followed your video in real time and it worked perfectly. You didn't miss one bit out. It was in my opinion a PERFECT video. Thanks for making them :-) Vince :-)

I did some digging, according to the Texas Instruments data sheets, those 2 chips are both CPUXV2 powered micro controllers, however they seem a bit different. The 40-VQFN has 64KB program memory and runs at 16 MHz, the 40-WQFN runs at 25 MHz and has 16 KB of program memory. The 40-VQFN uses FRAM as it's memory type, and the 40-WQFN uses FLASH as it's memory type. So although they only differ by 1 letter, they seem to have a sizeable number of differences.

Great video, hard to watch at times but at least you left that stuff in there. A couple of tips, when nudging a chip to see if the solder has melted, only use a tiny bit of pressure or you have the chance of ripping pads off. Imagine standing a penny on its end and pushing it over, very little force to see it move. Not so much flux next time, this will help stop it floating when the flux gets hot, also, like others have said, turn down the air to help stop it blowing around. I did notice the chip jump into place but then you went and nudged it for some reason, I was screaming at my screen haha. You vids are great, not many people leave the bad bits and mistakes. Keep up the great work Vince!

@My Mate VINCE Just for info the 40WQFN, 40VQFN id's are package types for the chip hence why if you look for data sheets you can find multiple sheets with those id's but different pin-out/functions. The 75DP159 (DP++ To HDMI Retimer). You probably are already aware of all this info anyway. Great job on the video! Looking up these sheets and learning that Xbox One S actually outputs in DisplayPort makes me wonder how hard a mod would be for those who want to connect via DisplayPort to a monitor.

Awesome!!!! Great job!!! I think you did a good job there! I would have been tempted to flow the underside of the new chip with solder and flux, but there was enough solder left on the board. You could also slow the air flow down on your hot air next time - that would help with it not moving around etc. But other than that, you pretty much nailed it!!!!! Great to see how chuffed you were at the end =D You are going from strength to strength!!!!
@Mymatevince
@Mymatevince 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris, I was well happy with this one. On the actual board not the chip would you remove the old solder with solder braid and then apply fresh solder on the board or just leave what is there already. Next time I will use your Chip Quik flux and hopefully it will be a bit more sticky than the stuff I used. I tried it today on another video and the chip came off a treat :-)
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 5 жыл бұрын
You should be - totally great job!!! I've not tried to fix one of these yet - BGA chips are a nightmare generally, but you made it look easy lol. I've got some even smaller QFN chips to install on a PCB I created next week - I am not looking forward to that lol, but what you've done there is equally as difficult imo.
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 5 жыл бұрын
And re-using the existing solder - There's no right or wrong really. The chip had failed probably (rather than a bad connection), so using what was already there is fine. If you ever get a BGA chip where it needs reflowing - then its perhaps worth removing it and using leaded solder (after removing the lead free solder). But modern lead free solder is much better than it used to be tbh.

:-) It was the video from Andrew Paul that made it so much easier for me, I think you will like him if you haven't had a chance to see his videos already. He makes it look like a piece of cake without it skating half way round the board. Thanks for the tips on the soldering. Those BGA chips must be so hard to get the solder to melt in the middle all the way through the chip!!!!

You did the right thing. Those V and W are part of the footprint identifier. VQFN vs WQFN. There are differences but generally just in height and thermals. But I wouldn't risk it because I can't find what the difference in thermal performance is. :/ A quick check and buying the SN75DP159 would cost be between €15 and €25. So the price for just one is not a bargin, they made a good penny... but certainly not a rip-off.
@Mymatevince
@Mymatevince 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info, height wouldn't matter in this instance but maybe thermals would???? I thought it would be best to get the one that is sold as Xbox One S when I am not clued up about these things :-)

That was just for the specific footprint. I don't like calling things a scam. There is conflicting information. But for that specific part the WQFN part would have been in a 40 pin package. Afaik the VQFN package for that specific part is 48pin. I've looked and a seller not specifying the pin count. Relying on a buyer not being aware of a such a subtle difference is in my eyes a scam.

Slightly higher heat, less air flow, no tape, gel type flux and longer air nozzle, this is all i would recommend you, awesome first try though and amazing that it worked, I know my first time repairing a logic board with components that small I went through a few components. :) Reasons for tips. #1 - More heat over less time is quicker and safer on the hardware than low heat over longer period, think about the frog in a pan of water #2 - Less air flow to stop the chip moving as much and less chance to knock off other components #3 - NO tape, never use tape just use more flux to cover everything in the area #4 - Best Flux types are the sticky ones, lasts longer under the amount of heat your using and can also be used to protect other components #5 - The Longer the air nozzle, the less restricted your view is over the area your'e working on recommend Flux - Amtech NC-559-V2-TF Tacky Flux 30CC

You never claimed to be an expert but seeing you fumble your way through to ultimate victory was what kept me glued to the screen for 1 hour, 28 minutes and 30 seconds. Hey Vince, just stumbled over your channel and I love the content. About the desoldering of chips, modern PCBs have a ton of copper inside and disperse a lot of heat you put in so preheating the whole board to about 80° Celsius in an old cheap pizza oven will make desoldering much easier. Also, adding leaded flux will help due to its lower melting point and you can wick it off afterwards anyways.

Well done Vince - great job. Its shows something with the cheap chips the manufacturers use to make more profit - if you take into account how much the board cost to profit - the whole console is around $59-$60 in costs the rest is soaked up with packaging/shipping/distribution etc - In a throw away society; you have bucked the trend. Again brave man to attempt and fix with basic tools. ~Trooper

Total stab in the dark with those identification serials for the 75DP159 chips... If they are using any modicum of sense I would like to think that the it may break down like: 40V (40 Volts) QFN 40W (40 Watts) QFN If I'm correct, then depending on resistance and input current, the Wattage version would struggle to produce 2V which would probably not be enough upscaling for HDMI power. Total stab in the dark, but it would explain the sheer price differences!
@cfavreau
@cfavreau 5 жыл бұрын
That is a good guess however the 40 refers to the number of pins. The other letters are usually a size/package physical description. V=0.5mm pin spacing, W=0.4mm pin spacing. If in doubt look in the datasheet.

I was trying to buy some N scale covered grain hoppers for my model railroad. Some guy had a three pack listed for double retail, and triple the going ebay rates, but had a make an offer button enabled... I offered the ebay rates..., and got this response: *_"Don't whine about it be a man."_* Really!?!?!? XD I replied to the guy telling him that while his response was rather rude, I wasn't gonna spend 2x retail, and 3x the going rate on ebay, when it would _literally_ be cheaper for me to buy _any_ other hopper and paint and decal it myself. I then asked him what he was _realistically_ looking to make on them... His reply... *_"Then stop bothering me and use your time to kitbash some. Be smart"._* It's so damn rude, but I couldn't stop laughing when he sent that, and reading it again, I'm laughing my ass off _again!_ XD He sent me that reply in August... Those dumb overpriced hoppers are STILL up for sale! XD

Nice job, Vince! Really pleased you got it working. :) I definitely recommend using tacky flux. I was using liquid flux pens the same as you for ages, until a friend suggested using tacky. Since then, it's basically all I use. So handy for BGA rework (I used to do reballing) and SMD soldering.

Well, the PS4 with a faulty hdmi IC controller isn't as easy also like the USB 3.0 IC (fat PS4 consoles only), because they have qfn88 packages and a large gnd middle point on a multi layer board like the PS4. With that hotair gun i dunno if it will be possible, but would love to see Vince trying to fix one with any of those problems. :) While the XBOX ONE has a smaller qfn package and is easier imo (have done a few)!
