Trying to FIX the Cheapest Rolls-Royce in the UK - PART 52!!!!

Part 52 - Seats, seat belts, rubbers, cleaning, cleaning and some more cleaning...The list goes on and on.
My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn't expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
This is PART 52 of this series. Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.

On your seat belts some times the edge of the belt gets nylon hairs showing. The mot people don't like belts with fuzzy edges. Take a cig lighter and run down both sides of the belt if needed. If you do it fast it will not hurt the seat belt and when done wipe the edges with a rag to remove any melted nylon. I used to work in a garage and that is what we did before sending it off for a mot.

Nice save on the arch protectors. The seatbelt cleaning trick is to pull them all ht way out and soak them in a bucket of warm water with some washing powder mixed in for an hour or so and rub them, you wouldn't believe the amount of dirt that comes out. The silicone spray trick is to make sure the spray is not oil based + sillicone spray, you just want pure silicone spray. Works a treat, as you saw, and no oily residue. I'd recommend filling all the existing cracks in the seat whilst you are at it, because when you get round to dying the leather, your new patch will look brand spanking new and smooth and shiny and then the rest will be slightly duller and cracked, so it will catch your eye. And I got carried away with the dye as it really make old leather look new, so I ended up dyeing the whole seat. It doesn't take much more effort as you just buff it on and leave it. So I'm pretty sure you will want to dye the whole seat when you get round to it.

the thing with those arch protector and other paint work your doing, i hate to say it but your getting the car painted professionally. they are going to strip it all off anyway, you should of just left them off until after the car was painted, i wouldn't worry putting any trims back on or patching paint it you are getting painted as its all wasted effort, i hate to say it Vince but its the truth, but love the channel i have been watching for years and years and what makes your channel great is showing the good and the bad so keep it up

I have a feeling that if this car does get a full paint job it will be a cheap "blow-over" job and everything will just be masked up including the arch trims.

@@st200olI agree . A proper job could be well into 5 figures and although according to Google his net worth is over a million pounds I’d be surprised if he’d pay that. Especially as we don’t have any knowledge of the state of the engine. I have the impression the interest in the Rolls is waning and now just used as a cash cow.

Surely those wheel arch protectors would have been better off applied AFTER the car has been painted? They will have to come off when it does...

To get a more realistic leather texture, I believe there are texture sheets that you iron over the new vinyl patch. The iron remelts the top surface and leaves the textured surface as you peel it off. I love all the videos that you do, thanks for that!

Also when trying to clean the leather, get yourself a finger nail brush, or a dedicated leather brush and agitate the leather cleaner to ensure you get into the grain of the leather.

You want a piece of kitchen roll for touching up. Just pull a piece off, and twist the end to make a 'paint brush'.......its a great method for touching up stone chips etc

Nice work, Vince :) I use laundry detergent and water on the seatbelts all the time as mine are not replaceable, because I have a limited edition concept junk, only 22 of those cars were ever made. Works every time. Then I leave them pulled out so they can dry easily.

Nice fixes, certainly the driver's seat look now much better than with those holes. Some other 80's cars had those stone guards on the rear wheel arch as well, for example VW Golf, Talbot Horizon and Mazda 323 1981-1985. In my 1982 323, they were removed already when the car was 10 years old, probably because of rust, but the part they would've covered, were painted matt black to simulate them, so at first glance from 10m away it looked original :D

The back seat cushions would have been a bit plumper when new so the pipping will have lined up , as its got flatter they will have spread out .

At 21:42 into this particular video, you remove the rear seatbelt covers, located on the rear parcel shelf just behind the headrest...... many thanks Vince, for showing us how to remove them, had no idea it was so easy, One of mine looked like it was broken, but I was weary of messing around with it and making things worse. I’ve just seen your video I carefully removed it, and put it back again job done. 👍.

Hi Vince, it's nice to see you back on the RR, I have been watching your work and your can-do philosophy. I seem to remember you are going to get it painted professionally, if so I think you might find the rubber guards you have painstakingly put on will probably have to be taken off for spraying along with some other trims as well, regarding the seats you can get a special leather repair paint, or a good set of seat covers...not criticizing you cos it's a big learning curve but just trying to be constructive and save you unnecessary work time and money... Keep the episodes coming can't wait for D day....( driving day)

Gloves mate, you've got gloves. Oh, you forgot them home, did ya? 😀 BTW if you remove the side of the front seat, would it be possible to put some more padding "from inside" of the seat? From the side where the springs that stretch the leather are. Other than that, nice clean up Mr. Monk ;-) (the rear belt covers are a nice place to put some more names on!)

You filled the hole , when the best practice would have been to cut a larger piece of leather to glue behind the opening and then use a much thinner flexible fill. Less is better for flexibility and will not shrink as much. Consider using a fine glazing putty after the initial body filler to blend the repair with the surrounding panel. I guarantee you will see a ghost of your existing work as it is now.

I've not seen all the RR videos, mainly started watching because of the electrical/electronics fixes cos I'm an electrical maintenance engineer myself so this is right up my street. Watched quite a few of the car videos now and just wanted to ask, when it's done and MOT is sorted are you going to keep it or sell it on and start another car project? To speed up slow retracting seat belts. Disolve a solution of BIOLOGICAL washing powder in a bucket of warm water. Leave the belts to soak for a few hours. The dirt in the weave will be eaten by the enzymes in the washing powder. Dry them off with a hair dryer or in natural sunlight. Any wispy threads along the edges can be remover by simply running a dual bladed saftey razor along the belts length.

For the seat belt pull the belt all the way out and clamp it with a spring clamp to stop it retracting then you can use foaming carpet/upholstery cleaner to get the belt really clean as it soaks in and lifts the grime wiping it clean with a cloth without getting the belt soaking wet as the foaming upholstery cleaner evaporates. Then a light spray of silicon spray and wipe off the excess. Glad the silicon spray trick worked for you though. For cleaning leather I like to use a brush as it allows you to get right into the grain, colour lock sell one and it's only a fiver. Their cleaner also foams quite a bit which helps release the dirt.

Vince! I beg of you, stop with the bodge fixes! The rear wheel arch rubbers are now ruined by smearing paint on them! You should have left them off for now and fitted when repainting. Now smearing paint on them makes them ruined for re-use if and when repaint happens. The drivers seat bolster - you did a decent repair on the hole in the leather - quit trying to fill the low spot with more leather repair. Take the seat back off, the seat cover is not glued to the underlying foam, you should be able to put some more foam in there without much effort or money. I'm a huge fan of your efforts, but the recent bodge fixes on the Rolls are really breaking my heart!

For the seatbelt, also try cleaning the top guide that the belt runs through. You will find it has a heap of junk built up in it which causes the belt to retract slowly, probably more so than the belt itself being dirty.

That paint will crack within 3 months and just breakdown. The best thing would be to start over with black. Love the videos mate

Vince the seat belt you should have cleaned with 2 micro fibber towel , one damp with a bit of car shampoo, you scrub it and clean the excess with a clean micro fibber cloth.

most hair shampoos and conditioners contain silicone... (does away with head lice - when just 'infected') and yes that makes your hair unstick - same goes for seatbelts.

Does you coolant temp gauge move when the car warms up? It looked like it hadn’t on the previous video. I believe the thermostats in these cars have lead metal “failsafes” that melt in an overheating situation and can cause that issue.

Try a little magic eraser soaked in diluted all purpose cleaner on that leather. Trust me, you'll be shocked. You don't want to do it all the time, but for filthy seats, it's incredible.

in the video prior to this one i was shouting at the screen NO dont do it, go and get the back or grey one ,it really is a shame you didnt just get the black or grey sealant, now any gaps near the edge will collect rain or water behind it , and could possible rust again . metal & Rubber and sealant expand and contract at different rates .. long term may not be successful but hear is hoping

Your seat damage isn't going to fill with Scratch Balm/light filler. That product has only colour and a light filler added to leather conditioning Balm so that it adds the colour and just a little substance to the actual Scratched leather surface where colour has been scratched off. If you have deeper damage than just scratches (your indentations) you will need a leather filler. Treat it like car body and spread it on like filler but it's really very important to dry it fully..I mean dry it till its very dry before you start to sand it off.

In the last video you removed both vent plugs from battery. In my car one is always plugged and other one goes to a small tube which runs underneath the car so when battery charges it can vent underneath the car and if it boiles itself and leak, it will not rust out the battery tray. I have no idea if your car has that but if it does it would be good to connect that.

I will double check, but on this car I don't remember seeing any holes for it to vent and certainly no pipes/tubes. Thanks for letting me know 👍👍
