I love watching these videos of you learning how to ride, because it reminds me of seven years ago when I taught my wife how to ride. She was equal parts terrified and excited at first, but the fear wanes and the excitement takes over. A little bit of fear is healthy though, because it can be dangerous so you never want to get too complacent.

As I have mentioned in your previous video, I am using your videos for tips and pointers for teaching my son to ride. He is at the same stage and going through the same process. These videos are well edited, really well thought out, and very helpful for me in teaching him to ride. I will make him watch them too. We also have a similar course for beginners called the Bronze course (then silver then gold). I also don’t feel comfortable for my son to take that course (practical on road course) until he is comfortable in traffic etc. I think you’re nailing it for methods to learn.

I'm at the same level you are. I've done some training with an instructor but now I'm on my own, so this is great. For braking, it's a little bit of front brake, then back brake, then more front. As you come to a stop, take off the front brake. This gives a gentler stop. Also, you don't do it all the time, but don't put your feet down too soon when you stop. It can unbalance you and that's how I fell off. It's so helpful to watch someone else doing it. Thank you.

Thanks for posting, Rea. Watching your first 2 videos on the Rebel 300 convinced my wife that maybe the bike would be the right size for her as well. She has not been disappointed! It has been a great combination of low seat height, fairly light weight, great technology (compared to the 2007 Nighthawk she's coming from), and cool looks. Thanks for being an encouragement to new riders, and especially to women riders out there!

These are great practices!. I know there's no traffic around you but if you pretend that there is and if you go through the motions of looking in your mirrors, indicating, and then checking over your left shoulder if you're pulling out to the left or turning left or looking over your right shoulder if you're turning right then you'll just get into the correct habits and when you're on the road it will become more natural. I've seen a couple of KZfaqrs using a couple of tennis balls cut in half as markers on the ground. Something for you to aim out when you're making a stop or your turn. Or for you to fit between when you're doing your u-turn. So impressed that you've looked at other videos and you're practising smart moves.

Took me about 1 month of riding in my neighborhood and taking the msf course before I took my bike on the road. That was two years ago, night and day difference it’s so fun you will see

Just a suggestion on your friction zone practice - start and (especially) stop in a more open space. Should you accidentally mess up stopping while heading right at a wall, it can be unnecessarily “interesting”. 😉 Look forward to seeing more of your journey. 😎

Rea learning the "friction zone" is vital to biking. When you get more confident, you can use the clutch to slow down your motorcycling so you're not putting a lot of pressure on your brakes. You are doing great! practicing starting, slowing down and stopping! Awesome! 😎

It's good that you are posting how to learn to ride. We need more MC riders. Wind and rain or hail are nothing when you have experience.

Motorcycle covers - there's a type that have strong elastic at the bottom, a bit like a tracksuit pant waistband but it's on the bottom of the cover where the tires are. I've used one of those. Also if you're parking the motorcycle have a think about the angle if that's an option for you in the wind. Maybe the angle can help with gravity to stop the bike from tipping over? And maybe there's a place you can park it where it gets more shelter by a wall or something? For security I used to use a ground anchor, It's a piece of steel shaped a little bit like your hand if you are holding a can of drink. A metal tube with a bolt that goes into the ground. I would pass my chain through it and have it quite snug. Just thinking that something like this could secure your bike from theft as well as from the wind. If the wind tried to blow it over and it was reasonably snug to the ground anchor on the side stand side then it should stop the bike from being tipped over to the other side. Maybe :-) You're absolutely right about riding in the rain. It's more trickier. Especially because if you do pull the front brake or you go over something slippy then the wheels can slide out from underneath you an instant. When I was doing training many years ago I was taught that in the dry we have about 75% breaking from the front and 25% of the rear. And when it's raining we have about 25% of the front and 25% of the rear. So we have to be more gentle with the front brake, look ahead more, give more time. If you have metal drain covers in the road, in Britain and Europe we have 2 ft square metal covers in the road. When it's wet and you ride over one of these while leaning then the bike can slide so something else to be aware of.

Excellent persistence. Way to use your permit for practice time.

Just a little tip here. Try to not put your feet down until you have come to a complete stop. Although it is a small chance, you can hurt your ankles if you are not fully stopped before you put your feet down. Work on getting comfortable with balancing the bike until you can do that. One part of the riding test here in NC is the "stop and go" where you have to do a Stop Sign stop and go without putting your feet down. You will get the hang of it after a while, but it is really easy to do.

Keep going! Gets easier every day. I just practiced in a parking lot, once you can do figure-eights and shift up then down to a stop with ease. You're doing good. Practice slow-racing, and leaning the bike not your body at low speeds!

It might sound dumb but when I was a kid learning I would sit on my motorcycle and just try to balance on it sitting still as long as I could without touching my feet to the ground, it help me learn slow speed balancing

I’m sure you know this by now, but for any newer riders watching these videos: ALWAYS keep your foot on the back brake while at a stoplight/stop sign/waiting to turn left, etc. it will help more than you could imagine if (in the unfortunate event) you get hit by another vehicle!!! I cringe when I see people just chilling with both feet planted on the ground in traffic.

Keep learning! Practice your motorcycle "skills" even when driving a car.

Please stop taking off with your right foot down on the ground and also use your back brake to come to a stop not your front brake. You are going to get your self in trouble. Try learning to take off like this instead. Put your right foot on the brake, put your left foot on the ground. Push the foot brake so you don't move do not use the front brake there is NO need to. Let your clutch out till you get into the friction zone and the bike engine starts to die down. (NOT enough to stall the bike tho.) NOW add a tiny bit of throttle and then let the clutch out 1 more millimeter to a true friction point and then hold it there. Then simply let your foot off the back brake do not let the clutch out any more hold it exactly where it is until your left foot is on the peg and you are moving under engine power then and only then let the clutch all the way out. When coming to a stop use your right foot on the back brake and only put your left foot down to hold the bike up as you come to the stop.. As a Motorcycle instructor who has taught thousands of people over the last 11 years and who has ridden for the last 30 it is great to see your passion and enjoyment in learning to ride, but there will be consequences and bad ones to the way you are teaching yourself. As Alexis said definitely practice in a more open area. One slip of the hand with the way you are currently teaching your self and into the wall you go and that's the end of the practice for at least a day. The only time I ever use my front brake is either when I am going down a hill and the back brake isn't slowing me down enough or during an emergency brake. These people telling you to use both haven't learned to brake earlier they power up to an intersection and then have to heave on both brakes to stop.... Dangerous and brain dead... Sigh If you let your throttle off early (say 40meters maybe a bit more or less depending on the situation) and roll then all you have to do is gently add brake in as the engine will help you slow down as well and then apply more pressure till you are ready to stop at lights or intersections or if you feel you are going to stop to early then let your foot up off the brake and roll a bit more.... The back brake gives you so much more control than the front brake. I do applaud you for not wanting to go on the road at this stage until you have done your course... Good choice.. Also if someone says lets go practice by doing a long ride somewhere... Don't do it. It will not teach you the skills for in town riding it will only teach you how to get to a high speed and basically go in a straight line..... Rant off... LOL

Practice just leaving it in first gear, stopping with just your rear brake and leave the rear brake foot up. When you're almost stopped just use the rear brake, it'll keep your front wheel from wobbling and tipping you over. Otherwise when you're going that slow right before you stop the front will grab and you'll tip ( the voice of experience LoL)

You should really consider taking the BRC2 course. You can skip BRC1 as it spends half the time teaching you how to drive a manual on a motorcycle. BRC2 starts after that on the beginner steps AND you are on your own bike. I am becoming a MSF Coach this summer, cant wait!

You mentioned watching DDTFM. He's great and gives really good safety advice. I watch him often. A couple of other people to watch on YT for slow speed maneuvers is a couple of channels called Be The Boss Of Your Motorcycle & Ride Like A Pro Jerry Palladino. Give those channels a look see to learn clutch control plan to never drop your bike at speeds slower than 20 mph.

Hardcovers are simply the better way to go. Also getting little bungee cords and making sure it is fastened down to the bike is always best, I would say if you end up being in a very windy place try to get a bike stand or something with more surface area that should help tons.

I just got me a new rebel and have been doing the same thing.

I am in uk we get bad weather too. Oxford covers are good. But they all balloon out, you need to lash them down if you use them. My be better to put motor cycle in a garage. Where its nice and warm.

Things I wish I was told when learning to ride. 1. Never ever put a load on the handlebars. Brake with your back and knees holding you up. 2. A car ALWAYS stops faster in an emergency than a motorcycle. 3. Simply look where you want to go. 4. Everyone else are idiots.

Last few feet of a stop should be rear brake only. If you practice that good habit you'll eliminate the cause of many a slow speed bike drop. Stopping using the front brake, if the forks are turned even a bit, will make the bike want to fall over. Keep it up! Exciting times.

What gear are you at when you do this.

You need to learn how to ride on a dirt, trail type bike before going to the streets I race flattrack bikes and have many years exsperience. It hurts a whole lot less when you fall off in the dirt and you learn alot faster. useing the front brake without the rear can get you in trouble. People in cars and trucks will run you over. Want you to get more training so you can be as safe and comfortable and confident as possible Hope you have fun and stay safe. The street is more dangerous than any kind of racing. Did you know itt is good to know how to crash?

Rear brake - just noticing that when you're doing your little practise moves that I don't think you're using the rear brake at all or much? I was taught that it can be quite useful when going slow to help give a little bit more control which doesn't upset the bike. Because it's working on the rear it won't make the front bounce or affect it as much as squeezing the front brake does which can make the forks dive a little bit. Great idea to practice in the car park. Keep going!

I started on a motocross track at 63 to learn riding properly roads are dangerous

Please get yourself some proper motorcycle riding pants. Expect to pay at least $200. Make sure they have knee and hip padding (D30 or something comparable) and make sure the seams are reinforced and there is Kevlar in the pant's construction. Safe riding!
