Romanian food tour time!!. Romanian food is up there with the best but rarely gets a mention! Today we run through one of the most stunning towns we've seen in Romania (Sighișoara) and get to try a list of all the best local Romanian food, our list definitely became one of Must try Romanian food.
Trying to not be slowed down by the jaw-droppingly beautiful town, we try a delicious and traditional donut called a Papanasi (Papanași). Then head straight to lunch where we get to try Polenta for the first time as well as some more Mici (Mititei - Which we knew we loved before today) and some of the Romanian national dish or Sarmale!
We finish the day in a 500 year old cellar at 'Teos Cellar' and try a brandy with a recipe that's 300 years old! Thats older than the United States! Crazy.
We LOVED trying all these foods so thanks for watching along!

The funny thing is that you guys did everything in reverse order: Usually when about to eat you take a shot of brandy to get you warmed up and prepare to burn all the fat from the meal, we say a shot of palinca/rachiu is ment to open up the appetite, then you eat the sarmale (which are either pickled cabbage or pickled grapevine leaves) and the polenta is not ment as a standalone meal, here we eat everything on either bread or polenta (is the old traditional way) usually if we see someone just eat their meal with no bread or not even polenta is really weird, and then at the end once the sarmale countered the burn from the brandy you eat the dessert which is the papanași. Oh well guess now you will have to do it all over again:)

One portion of papanasi is made off of two papanasi. So if you order one, you get two. If you order two, you get four. :)
@JordanandEmily
@JordanandEmily Жыл бұрын
We only found this out after posting the video! Nobody has been able to give us a reason why that is though!? is it just a language thing? like Papanasi is a plural and there's another word for a single one?
@zerefcifer
@zerefcifer Жыл бұрын
@@JordanandEmily Yeah, papanasi is plural. Singular would be papanas. But the standard portion of papanasi is 2. To get only one would be half a portion. Usually, people get one portion, and they will share. 95% of all restaurants in Romania will serve 2 papanasi when you order one portion. It's just the way it is. It's not a language barrier. The same would happen if a Romanian would be ordering too. Very few will serve just one, but that one papanas would be bigger, so it's like getting two smaller ones. :) I think it's because they don't want to waste the dough or something like that. Papanasi are always made on the spot. That's why you should order them in advance, right when you sit at the table and make your first order. Some more Romanian food recommendations for you guys would be: bulz, salata de vinete, carne de la oala, fasole cu ciolan afumat. And then there are some other dishes that Romanians eat, but they are only served in Xmas time, like racitura or piftie. But just try the ones above. You'll love it.

Polenta is not eaten by itself, it simply replaces bread. It has a bland taste, so its role is to accompany the main dish, namely sarmale. Polenta can be eaten with cheese and sour cream (mămăligă cu brânză şi smântână). You can also try out "bulz de mămăligă", that is delicious as well.

Skip the big city traditional dishes, they tend to do them "stylish". Next time go to Maramures, or Bucovina and have a traditional feast there, in a random village. Actually, if you go to different regions, you will experience very different food recipes. There are specific dishes in Transilvania, specific in Oltenia, and all other historical regions. You will not find a same named dish exactly the same if you travel around the country. I reckon that you need some 1-2 months of intensive travel just to scratch the surface of our country. Thanks for visiting !

Papanasi is not regular fried or boiled donut. It is a dough with cheese, traditionally boiled, toped over with sour cream and jam. And yes, that food we eat mainly in the winter, we do it in the warmer seasons as well, but not that much. In the summer we are eating tons of bread spreads, cheese with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers and young onion, fresh and light ciorbas. Palinca is present in every season 😂

@@JordanandEmily Good question, maybe because when we make them we usually fry two of them in the pan. Also, the term itself is a plural, the singular would be "1 papanaş". The mici are quite popular in Romania and can be eated during the whole year.. whenever you feel like wanting to eat some. They are easier to be cooked compared to sarmale. You can fry them either in sunflower oil OR (the more popular way) on the GRILL. They are always served with MUSTARD + some bread and I will also add a BEER (or at least something like a Cola if you want to avoid alcohol). 😁 But sometimes it can also depend from where you try them (some people make them better.. some.. less better 😄 Guess this is why it is important to try some foods at least 2 times and from different places / different cook or restaurant). 😁

Hey guys ! Aussies are some of my favorite people ! So , 1 by 1 - Papanasi sometime are 2 to a serving , you should have asked in advance . And Cipaku is right , you started in reverse . You have to work out a hunger when you want to eat in Romania . Although we have to admit that Serbians are eating larger qty than us . A steak in Belgrade is around 400 grams ( 0.4 kg :-) ) . Polenta is not made in Romania from corn flour , this is a misconception done by many foreigners . Is made from grinded corn , which is not same thing . Grinded coffee is not coffee flour :-) That's why is yellowish . Regarding sour cream to top of sarmale , it can be too greasy sometime. I prefer 10% fat yoghurt , is "cutting "the pork meat in sarmale , but , well , I'm from Constanta , different tastes 🙂

My advice: have sarmale with Romanian bread. Mamaliga is not meant to be eaten by itself, and even we, at home, prefer to serve sarmale with plain bread and (Romanian - I couldn’t stress this more) sourcream. Another word of advice: mamaliga is best prepared at home, with lots of other stuff in it.

Polenta you don't judge it individually... it's like you'd have an oppinion about the white rice only in asian cooking. You are supposed to construct every single bite with a part of polenta and a part of the cabbage roll. Romanian can eat polenta with almost anything, even soup... In this sense it is seen more like a bread replacement, or noodles, or rice... it's carbs after all :-)

1 portion of papanasi consists of 2 pieces. So you ordered 1 portion, they just split the portion on 2 plates for you.

And speaking of sarmale , you tried in wrong region. Transylvanians will hate me , but they don't know what they do , so they will be forgiven. My grandmother was from Arges and moved to Dobrogea as a kid. She was later paid to cook sarmale for weddings , like 200-300 servings , so you imagine they did not pay her for nothing. My father is cooking sarmale by her recipe ( she passed away long time ago ) and everybody , I mean everybody , that tasted my father's sarmale said they are the best they ever have ever ate.

Polenta is not meant to be eaten alone. Its meant to be eaten together with other foods, as a replacement for bread. Alone it doesn't taste much but bread alone also doesnt taste much... together with sarmale though.... they are a unseparable. You cannot eat sarmale without polenta.... its like eating mici without mustard! A crime against humanity! 😂😂😂

The forest fruit liqueur that you drank, is not that special. Its simple plum brandy poured over a bottle half filled with forest fruits and some sugar. after 2, 3 month, fruits start to disintegrate inside, sugar its diluted, and that's all.

@@JordanandEmily Possible for the recipe for brandy. Romanians dont make hard liqueurs from cereals. NEVER. Also brandy its something else, distilled wine. What you guys drink, its called Palinca ,Tuica or Horinca. If you vizit Transilvania, Maramures or Moldova , its called diffrent. Basically its the same thing, but diffrent fruits used. From what I heard, there is a guy, very passionate about this craft, who supplies Royal House from UK with such treats.

First of all, Papanasi are not doughnuts. The dough from which they are prepared contains sweet cheese, sour cream does not mean that it is sour like a lemon, it is only slightly fermented and has natural bacteria. A PORTION of Papanasi means 2 pieces. MAMALIGA is never eaten by it self , Italians put cheese or something in it, Sarmalele are not an easy kind of food, and in most houses they are eaten with onions, hot peppers and sour cream of your choice, no, it does not resemble anything VIETNAMESE .
