Simple fix on a TS-940S. A much shorter video than normal (for me). Diagnosing using schematics and symptoms before wreaking havoc. Another example of connections being the most common failure mode.

Great video!!! I sure wish back when I was in school I would of taken up electronics. Working on my Kenwood TS-440S I am learning some about a few things. If it wasn’t for guys like you my 440 would probably be in a landfill somewhere. Got almost all the bands working but still can’t get 12 thru 10 Meters to work. But I hope to get it fixed. 73 Juddie WD8WV

I really like your way of trouble shooting. I also find that most repairs are found with the eye. We have a lot in common. I am a retired machinist, have my own shop and repair radios with my limited test gear. My benches look like yours also! HI HI AB1ZI

Thanks Carl! Sounds like we do have a lot in common. Welcome to the fray. I try to leave little to chance in electronic service. I delight in accurately troubleshooting from the symptoms alone, often over the phone! The only way to do that is understanding circuit function thoroughly. Not always the easiest with today's service literature. Get some stuff on your channel!

Faulty ground.... would have expected that in a strange electrical issue on a car, but not that radio. Could be due to my zero experience with working on radios, beside taking old military surpluses ones apart when I was a kid... dad would bring me one home once or twice a year to break into and explore.

There should NOT have been a ground fault. Normal engineering practice would dictate that a ground wire and continuous trace on board would have provided a circuit path to ground even if mechanical means failed, as it did in this case. Using mounting screws for ground return in a sub-assembly like this, for some, but not all circuits, was extremely lazy. Good exercise in diagnosing schematic vs. physical differences though. I miss printed service manuals, no easy place to note this mechanical difference.

Are you still doing repair videos? I've really learned a lot from your TS-940S videos. I have two in my shack, neater of them work. I have found problems with drawings not matching the board layout. I'll say this about the Ts-940S, if you can fix one of these radios you can fix any radio. Trouble shooting this beast is a night mare. I hope to see more from you soon.

I am still doing videos when I have time in shop. But COVID, and an unusually busy year, has prevented my project time severely. My current 940 project will be to add a real AM modulator (not Balanced Modulator) in the driver stages of my 940. So look for that. If you found errors in your manual you should watch part 2 of my FT1000 series. Thanks for watching and stay well.

Sorry to ask a stupid question, but what is VOX? I’m sure this is something I’m supposed to know.

Someone "Liked" this reply? Really? Hmm. I thought I should perhaps explain my answer in more detail. Obviously I do occasionally take in a radio for repair. I have a small circle of friends for whom I will do repairs, generally free of charge. Sometimes they have to wait a long time to get their gear back. I'm talking months, even years. Paying customers just can't wait that long. Also, if I made repair a commercial venture I really couldn't charge what I feel my time is worth. So, sorry, I no longer repair radios for side work. Too many activities, too few hours in the day.
