On 2/27/2010, we were awoken at 6 a.m. to the sound of the civil defense sirens. We turned on the TV and were told that a tsunami warning was in effect. The waves were expected to reach the Hawaiian Islands just after 11 a.m. It was a beautiful, calm morning. We made sure we had water and food, in case the power went out, then we just waited. The evacuation area was just across the canal from us, in Waikiki. Most buildings evacuated vertically, so the traffic was light. At around noon, we started to see the surge of the tsunami. It isn't big enough to see on the video; but if you look carefully, you can see the brown water making its way up the canal. Each surge took about 10 to 15 minutes. We could see the exposed reef just off shore, when the water receded. The most interesting sight was the boats. All the Honolulu harbors were evacuated. The last image shows the hundreds of boats anchored off shore. I learned a lot about how a tsunami works; and I'm grateful that this was a non-event. Absolutely one for the memory books!
