It's like an Explorer and Panerai had a baby. For $2800 is a good price for this watch, even used Explorers cost a lot more.

This was a fantastic review James. I really like the straight shot of the watch with the bullet point details. I have tried this and the Black Bay Blue both with the bracelet and my preference is the Black Bay. But that's just one watch lovers humble opinion. Keep up the great content!

I own this watch and love it. It has much more presents in person. I don't understand this talk of it being overpriced for an Eta based movement. Omega and IWC have watches costing two to three times what this costs with a base Eta movements. My ranger runs within 2 seconds per day, which is better than the the Rolex Sub I owned.

Thats the thing i love about tudor, you get the great casing from rolex and a robust and serviceable ETA with the tudor quality control. I think it s a classy and a well priced machine, it will last a lifetime and its not a fortune to service, like some in house movements

I saw it in the flesh today and have to agree it is a very nice watch in the flesh. Unlike normal Tudor watches the case is nice and slim.

Excellent video sir,..just purchased this watch found on eBay for an awesome price. Came with a leather strap and the cam NATO which I really prefer. It’s light very well made. Have no issue with the ETA 2824. Some may look down on it, But when Tudor does their magic with it it’s an entire new ball game. I had had other watches with this movement but it’s not the same. Doesn’t wind the same keep time the same. My particular watch comes close to cosc believe it or not. Bottom line, it’s a fun watch rugged that I didn’t break the bank to get. To those Who noses are in the air I also own a Rolex oyster perpetual ‘09..

Nice overview James, my opinion is this is just about the nicest traditional field watch you can buy, the current Explorer or IWC MK are less interesting. Love the painted dial on the Rangers, and all the details you discussed.

COMMON ERROR 2:15 into the video) 28,800 beats/hour = 8 HERTZ, not 4. Hertz denotes a WAVE-cycle, in this case the cycle of the SOUND - the «tic» or «tac». There is ONE such sound-cycle for each ONE pallet-fork sway against the balance wheel’s jewel to one side. It says «tic» going one way, which is one «beat» in the sum of 28,800 beats, and as it sways back the other way there is another, when it says «tac». So the «tic-tac» is a TWO SOUND CYCLE event, times 4 is 8. Each second there are 8 such SOUND-CYCLES. Argue with me or ignore me, but you are mistaken, along with the rest of the watch-talkers who have the same misconception. A ‘Hertz’ is ‘SOUND-FREQUENCY’, the frequency of SOUND, not swinging metal objects. A ‘Hertz’ is the pressure cycle of a sound-wave as it moves through its amplitude twice in one cycle, in one second. So, the watch blogging members of the general public have agreed to use the fancy term ‘Hertz’ about the mechanical ‘back-and-forth-sway’ of the feather spring equipped balance wheel that is coupled to the escape-obstacle with its locking- and impulse-jewels, all of which give off ‘tics’ each time the escape wheel is being blocked and has to wait for the balance spring to bounce back the other way. 4 times a second does it bounce back-and-forth in a second to produce the 8 tics or ‘beats’. The ‘Hertz’ word in our blog-operated lingo-slang belongs to the sphere of SOUND, just like it does in all other domains of language use. The frequency of the TICS form a VIBRATION, which is sound of the second order. The sound of the ‘tic’, one tic, has a pitch, a frequency. A BURST of such tics forms a vibration, and vibrations too have a frequency. So, imagine the FREQUENCY of the tics being audible as a ‘SOUND-TRAIN’. THAT too is a sound-frequency that can be heard, and the term «Hertz» applies here as well. Hence, a 28,800 per hour train of tics is a second order sound with the frequency of 8 «HERTZ», not 4. The term belongs to the sphere of pressure-cycles, by definition.

2:15 NOT 4 but 8 «Herz». You don’t know what a «Herz» is. It isn’t ‘the number of back-and-forth-cycles of the balance-wheel per second’ dummy, it is ‘the number of SOUND-WAVE-cycles per second coming from the INPUT-stones touching the balance-wheel’, WHICH IS TWICE the number of the balance-wheel’s mechanical ‘back-and-forth-swings’ aka ‘cycles’. You and everyone else talking the same watch-lingo have the concept of the «Herz» wrong because you never learned what it is. It speaks about the frequency of a wave cycle, in this case that of a particular sound-wave.

The most common frequency for modern mechanical wristwatch movements is 4 Hz, or 28,800 vph. A watch ticking at 4Hz makes 4 oscillations per second, or 8 semi-oscillations (or vibrations) per second. There are 60 seconds in a minute, so this watch would tick at 480 semi-oscillations (or vibrations) per minute. Multiplying the 480 vibrations per minute by the 60 minutes in an hour yields the 28,800 vph figure. Since this watch ticks 8 times per second, a chronograph in a 28,800 vph watch can time events to the nearest 1/8 of a second.
@MikeBisney9 жыл бұрын
Very simple watch, that is hard to accomplish. Reminds me of the Rolex explorer.

James Stacey, remember to mention, next time, that Hamilton is CRAP water-resistance-wise, with no screwing on the crown, you just pull it out to fill the watch with water, NOTHING LIKE THIS TUDOR.

Ugh. That hour hand is like a sore thumb. The side profile of the case looks awesome but head on it just looks weird. I personally think this watch is a swing and a miss on Tudors part.

Sir that kind of money . Eta 2824 same as hamilton khaki watch for less than $1000.00 I don't know if I personally buy Tudor . I would think for almost $3000 you have a better movement but that's just my opinion...

Very overpriced for an ETA movement. It would be better if it was under 40mm. For a tool watch I would prefer the Sinn or Damasko, much better value and much better bang for your buck.
@DerpEye9 жыл бұрын
It's a nice watch but....cmon, ETA 2824? Not even a 2892, seriously? A Glycine Airman costs 50% less and has a better movement and about the same overall quality.. I'd rather add 500$ and buy a second hand 114270
@michaelhoward30317 жыл бұрын
Question: how much of Rolex's actual "case", and shock resistance, and durability, etc is in this watch? Is it 100% rolex quality case a nd100% typical 2824 movement? I know this is pretty well debated but it would be good to put an end to the debate and have a damn answer about it. There's no point paying the tudor price if it's not rolex case quality. Do they go through the same 26 drop tests and other checks, etc? Or are we just kidding ourselves and Rolex is just trying to profit from having a "cousin" company? I don't want to buy a tudor thinking it's a rolex and have it not be. What do we actually KNOW about this, apart from speculation and assumptions?
@maxmeier5326 жыл бұрын
The name Tudor is blessing and curse at the same time. It is like a Rolex only cheaper. It's almost a Rolex, but the cheap version, which defies the idea of Rolex, cause all that is about is the prestige, be it justified or not. If it werent for liking a specific design you would probably be better off, getting another brand, that isnt known to be the bargain version of the expensive sister brand. And as some have stated in that price range plus/minus 500 bucks, you can have a great variety.
@z00h8 жыл бұрын
There's so much hype for Tudor at the moment. As with any hype it will drop off one day. Especially with Swiss watch manufacturers hitting a bit of a wall at the moment (Aug 2016) and since this is an entry level Swiss watch it will drop like a motherfucker. Unlike Rolex which should hold it's value. I might pick up blue Pelagos once they hit the 1k mark.

Looks like a damn Timex and all the new Tudors are super bulky and thick. They should have given it a snow flake hand!
@RobbieKhan9 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't go that far! I have a Pelagos and in pictures and videos it looks thick/big but in reality it wears and feels very light and small. I used to have other 42mm watches and a 39mm Longines diver but due to the way this wears it just sits nicer in many ways on the wrist. |Snowflake on a ranger would not fit in with the aesthetic either really, that sort of hand is dedicated to the usual dive watches you see them on. Having said that, I wouldn't buy a Ranger, it's too generic in design and nothing is stand-out about it. Stowa/Laco and even a few German brands offer similar designs with a few of them having USPs for far less money. As you say, it does remind you of a Timex from afar. At least with a watch like the Black Bay or Pelagos you can instantly see where the money is going.

I dont want to be rude but i dont know why i think of mickey mouse when i see this watch, maybe because of the curved text "self winding" on the dial look like a smiley mouth and the numerals are to big!

Thorough review, but seriously: 1) ETA2824 for USD 2800? 2) Painted dial, not even an embossed logo? 3) 41mm, no bezel? That's borderline gross. 4) No end-links for the bracelet? There's so much to critize here. Why doesn't AB2W ever focus on the negative aspects of a release? Seriously: how many people will buy this watch and think: "finally. A keeper!" Tudor droppet the ball on this one. Could, and should, have been a great re-relase, but in the end they ended up with a boy scout watch on steroids. Glad I already own a 114270...
@watchmestress41828 жыл бұрын
1) there are Eta based watches that sell for a lot more than this. IWC for instance. 2)The painted dial is how vintage watches were made hence the heritage reference. 3) The ranger like the explorer is a field watch. Field watches don't have bezels, divers do 4) The end link is also a throw back to vintage bracelets. 5) This is not a Rolex Sub., it wasn't ever intended to be. So if you want a bezel, a Rolex movement and the satisfaction of pay twice a s much to look down on other people buy a Sub.

$2000-2500 is overpriced for an ETA 2824 movement watch. Plenty of watches around 500-700$ with that movement. Oris, Hamilton. Who cares that the case was made in a rolex factory... it's NOT a rolex.
@5RustyBin7 жыл бұрын
er yeah - that's why its a lot cheaper than a Rolex. You could also say "who cares that your submariner is a Rolex - its NOT a FPJourne". Rolex aint all that. The Tudor is only £1400 for a year old one, plenty people will think that's good value.
@asparis1451499 жыл бұрын
It is a very nice watch, but "a beautiful case for the price point"? Seriously? It's a $300 movement, so you're paying $26 hundred for the case and a painted dial. At that price it would be appropriate for the price point only if it was solid gold. Compare to any number of (for instance) Longines pieces with the same movements at less than half the price. Google "Veblen goods."
