Very big shame that his original model is missing. Let's hope we can find him someday to complete the Star Tugs Fleet!

Top Hat: the Gordon the Express Engine of TUGS

It's interesting how observational and quick-thinking Top Hat is in several episodes: High Tide - After Lord Stinker points out Zebedee's high load, Top Hat realises that an accident is imminent and quickly reverses out. He also comes up with the idea to use the steel rig to keep the bridge from collapsing after noticing how it is wedged underneath. He also quickly catches on to what Lord Stinker wants to do in order to save the goods train. High Winds - After spotting Zebedee sneaking off with a coal barge, he recalls that he was the only one meant to be carrying out deliveries, and decides to check with Captain Starr about it. I like the implication that this may have been how Hercules came across Zebedee and Johnny Cuba. Warrior - After seeing Ten Cents in trouble with Izzy Gomez, Top Hat comes up with the idea to use Lord Stinker to get under the tramper's hulk, due to being too tall himself.

Top Hat is a very fine chap. Shows he's not just some upper class twit. He's my favorite Star Tug partly because of his ties to the railway.

Along with Ten Cents, Top Hat's character development is very well done. Had season 2 gone ahead I think we would've gotten more of his character.

Still is a shame his full on character arc was lost due to the episode being cut down to 15 minutes. If you view "High Tide" coming before "Munitions" the rest of the stars continue to grow more and more sick of him with them being much more hostile talking about him in "Munitions" rather than in "High Tide". With the next episode coming right after "Munitions" being "Quarantine" (a mixture of "O.J.'s Bad Day" and "Quarantine"), some plot points are notable missing that are present in the adapted story book. Top Hat is the one in vouching for O.J. not to be scraped and in the process, paying off a fantastic redemption arc that was built up before.

I love Top Hat. Much like Gordon, he may seem like a grumpy, arrogant, pompous and conceited jerk. But when you get to know him, he has a heart of pure gold and has improved dramatically since the start of the series like Gordon.

Very nice summation! I'm glad that the 15-minute version of Regatta is referenced, as what he says in that scene is completely different to the 20-minute version, where he's only thinking about himself.

Top Hat would've probably been even funnier in season 2, if it got made.

Top Hat was a great choice for this one :) Yeah, he really did grow a lot, but, no matter which version of Top Hat he is, he's still a remarkable character :)

6:34 I think Munitions DOES come before Regatta. There's many clues: 1. Bluenose is a bit kinder in Regatta. When Big Mac says they're busy, he says he understands. That wouldn't have gone over well in Munitions. That and Bluenose has the better introduction in Munitions (the 30 minute cut of Jinxed probably had the planned debut). 2. Grampus saving Ten Cents gives the Stars more incentive to save Grampus, and was probably why Captain Star bought him. 3. Regatta takes place in the summer with Quarantine (4th of July, heat wave), yet Munitions is before Quarantine, as a deleted scene shows Top Hat and Warrior with a burnt Kraka-Toa.

5:31 Top Hat not only praises Billy Shoepack. Also in "Trapped", Top Hat also says a VERY FUNNY line, "OOH I SAY HELLO!!!"

I like that even tho he did Change a lot. He still feels true to his character. He’s still the snooty upper class railways tug we all love. Just a nicer one.

I’m so glad I got to make a mock up of Top Hat in ERTL a few weeks ago. Top Hat is one of my favourite characters and I’d be interested in seeing what they would have done with him if the show continued seeing as he had grown a lot throughout the show’s sole existing season. This guy is both the Gordon and the James of Bigg City Port. Now as for my next ERTL Tugs edit, I’m debating on whether to do Oj or Zorran. I’ll probably put up a poll for this tomorrow or during the week, but as for you, which one do you think I should do first?

There is one detail that puts High Tide before Munitions. In the 20 minute cut, there's this exchange between Captain Star, Big Mac and Sunshine: Captain Star: Sunshine, go to the canal. Pick up Mighty Mo. They’ve finished the work on the bridge. Take him home. Sunshine: Alright, aye, good. I like Mighty Mo! Captain Star: Big Mac! Thanks for winning us the steel contract. Big Mac: That’s okay, Sir. Captain Star: You pick up the last girder barge, then back here. Both "mending the bridge" and "winning the steel contract". So.. if Top Hat's character arc really was that consistent... why didn't he help put out the munitions fire?
