Admitting we need help, need practice and experience is a sign of maturity and self actualization. Sierra did a fantastic job and Chris was so level headed and practical. Billy, cracking open that beer should be a sign to Sierra that you trust her with your life. Amazing video......Best work you all have done has been the last several videos.

The best thing you can do for your learning journey is to leave Billy on the dock and take a couple of non-sailing but capable friends out with you. Teach them everything you (think) you learned, and try to answer all their questions. At the end you'll have a list of things you had to say "I don't know" to that you'll want to look up, and you'll also be way more confident in the things you did know.

My father taught me how to sail, he was self taught, and I've sailed my whole life. When we took ASA-101, 103, and 104 12 years ago, that is when we actually "learned" how to sail. Yes, we could each handle a sailboat but it's amazing how much we didn't know.

My wife and I have been taking ASA classes together the last couple of years along with practicing sailing our 23.5' boat as we prepare to sail off into the sunset in retirement. It's been great to be able to take turns as captain, as everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. Your honest little clips of frustration you included at the front of this video might be really insightful for folks just starting their journeys who might only see the "good days" on sailing channels. Great content, as always!

Sierra, Just because your leeward telltale is flapping/waving doesn't mean you HAVE TO bear downwind (or away) a little or change course to 'fix' the telltale, You can of course ease the sail out a little till the telltales behave correctly without changing course, the beauty of this is that the sail will be more efficient (flap less $) but you boat will gain speed while maintaining the same heading!!! YAY! Some times you will notice that the bottom telltale will be just fine while the upper ones my still wave around. this tells you that the clew attachment point needs adjusting up at the corner so that the sheet controlling that sail pulls the sail down more than back. Also you should try to run the track out as far wide as you can to allow the sail to be 'flatter' rather than rounder for greater speed. If you have a heavy swell or big chop on the sea then have the sails 'rounder' which will give the boat less speed but better power/drive through the water against the chop. Think of an aircrafts wing (which essentially is what a sail is - just upright). Big heavy planes like Jumbo's and A380's need wings with LOTS of curvature. Fighter jets that go fast and carry far less weight need only slim sharper wings and accordingly have less drag and hence go faster. Hope this helps you understand what is going on with your sails. Good luck to you both with your new SW. Congrats by the way. Are you the proud owner of hull #1 of the 1370? Or are you after Nick and Terysa? Fair 💨 and following 🌊in your new adventures.

After just the 5 minute intro: Sierra, you are a star! Can you say "vicarious?" I know many are living through your adventures. Congrat's to Sierra for finishing that refresher. I did an 11-day 'bare boat skipper' course 2 years ago. Like Sierra, I already knew how to sail, but I learned tons more on that course...much more than what she learned in 2 days or course, like getting a radio license, reading buoys and flags, engine inspection, etc.

Delos has a rule I'm surprised you missed. Nobody goes forward to reef or adjust a sail when they are alone on watch. Always wake someone else up so there is help if you fall overboard or have any unexpected problems. You fall overboard while everyone else is sleeping, and the boat sails away from you and disappears. This is almost always fatal.
@pred7949
@pred7949 Жыл бұрын
i assume out of their perspective, the need and danger aspect of having to move forward on their upcoming catamaran would be much less than that of delos' ketch monohull, but you are still making a very valid point
@monicapuccetti3310
@monicapuccetti3310 Жыл бұрын
On a Seawind there is almost no reason to go forward, almost all sail adjustments (baring snuffing a spinnaker) can be done from the cockpit. This is what she meant by adjusting sails while he’s sleeping, on our 1160 we can put in reefs, change angle, furl, tack, gybe, etc all from the cockpit and singlehanded.

First off let me say I love this because neither you or Billy come from the sailing background. I know when the Gone with the Wynns bought their boat and we’re going out to sail it was ridiculous. I called the good old boys network lineage sailing Nazis came out. They were like you can’t sail, oh you’re not allowed to buy a boat and become a sailor you are raised in it! What are you doing? Who do you think you are? Well, what they think is their people with money, and they can become sailors too, and you can’t stop them just like me! It was ridiculous. Please don’t ever turn into those people.. I am also going to learn how to sail, so I really appreciated this video. My plan was to watch instructional videos, exactly like this one you have created. Then learn all the words and the definitions from KZfaq videos annd online. Next my husband and I have two Hobie Mirage Passport 10.5 with kick drive. So next I’m going to buy a sail for it and go out into the Port Royal sound. if I have to get in because it’s not working out the best I can just foot pedal it in! Then next I’m going to go to the yacht and sailing club by our house and learn on a bigger little boat. Then in the end I’m going to do exactly what you’re doing Sierra. I will go to a personal company and become a captain. So that’s my plan you’ve inspired me! Also, I agree with the captain I’ll love Key West. I had no idea until a few weeks ago that you can purchase a marina slip down in the Keys!!!!

Then, teaching others strengthens your own understanding & skills in the process. I was taught to call out to crew: "Ready about..." when your preparing to tack or jibe - etc.

Yes, I was taught the same thing for tacking into the wind. You say to the crew, "Ready about" then just before you tack as you move the tiller to leeward you say "Hard to lee". For Jibing you say, "Ready about" then "Jibe Ho!".

@@emilybh6255 Indeed. Having learned to sail, as a teenager, on 14ft Lido/Capri boats, alerting 'unsuspecting crew' of soon-coming low-boom action is ESSENTIAL for keeping all heads safe from injury... or, even getting knocked overboard; in which case, knowing your MOB drill comes in handy. Maybe some First-Aid training, too.

Two thumbs up! As a former ski tour guide I have encouraged many a past girlfriend to spend a few days each season either with a private coach or in an all-women camp/class. It is a very rare couple that can learn any skill from each other without emotional distress. Not to plug another YT channel, but Desiree of Project Atticus went through the same thing a couple of years ago. We should all help our first mates to learn and grow, especially when we are dependent on each other for safety and survival.

In a marriage you rely on your spouse to compensate for your weaknesses. Learning from someone other than your spouse identifies your weaknesses but forces you to overcome them rather than relying on someone else. Back in the day my former spouse and I did white water canoeing. She could see the rocks but couldn’t steer to avoid them, I could steer but most of the time it was too late to avoid hitting the rock. We solved the problem by buying kayaks and taking lessons. 😂

Tula Crew, thanks for a great video! As a US Coast Guard Auxiliary coxswain and instructor, I appreciate good educational content on boating skills and safety. The video does have some incorrect information about the Navigation Rules at 7:23 and 15:40, though. The ONLY situation in which a vessel has the right-of-way is power-driven vessels that are downbound with a following current on certain waters as addressed in Rule 9 and Rule 14. In all other situations, no right-of-way exists. Rather, there is a stand-on vessel and a give-way vessel. A stand-on vessel does not have the right to follow the rules into a collision without liability. Rule 17(a)(ii) permits a stand-on vessel to take action to avoid collision as soon as it becomes apparent that the give-way vessel is not taking appropriate action, and Rule 17(b) REQUIRES stand-on vessels to take action to avoid collision if action by the give-way vessel alone would not avoid a collision.

Man overboard is about the most important thing you can practice on the boat. Lots of people have heard that, and "know" it, but don't practice it anyway. Make it a game, every time you go out sailing, practice a man overboard drill. And practice like it'll happen. Designate someone as the person overboard and have them sit quietly while you run the drill. That means if there will be only two of you on board, practicing MOB should be a solo affair. You'll find out quickly just how hard it is to stop the boat and to retrieve a motionless object when you have no one to help you. Also, practice MOB with all different sail configurations. If you'll have a spin up, for example, practice a MOB starting with the spin up; its a totally different/extra set of skills and a lot harder. Same idea with the weather. MOB's happen in nice, calm weather when people are complacent, or they happen in heavy weather when conditions get challenging. You have to be ready to deal with both. Finally, its your boat and no godly authority is going to come down and smite you for doing it "wrong". Sailing courses teach you to recover under sail, and you should absolutely practice that and know how. But you are also on a big catamaran with a lot of forces in the sails and perfectly functional engines. It is completely valid to start the engines and use them as extra control in an emergency situation. Free the sheets, let the sails all luff, and motor up from downwind is perfectly valid and can give you more/easier control over the boat with less limitation on approach angles and timing; its not the best approach in every situation but it should be one more tool in the bag. MOB isn't a happy subject, but its an important one. Happy sailing!
@Tomm9y
@Tomm9y Жыл бұрын
Practice is key, and spend time understanding the theory, sailing, rules, navigation, weather, etc. is so important. I would recommend racing a suitably sized dinghy too. Go racing on bigger boats starting on short races but over time sail on longer races and overnight. It improves your skills and on longer passages you should get to plan navigation, weather forcasting, route choices. If you follow sailing Sweet Ruca, who haved raced hard for years, they have a J46 and know how to sail comfortably or fast, how to evaluate risk, how to protect the boat from damage by judging the forecast and conditions. Sailing courses and qualification are great, time on the water in various boats, learning from good sailors, keeping safe are important too.

I took an ASA course in the San Juans and it was amazing. It's strange how you can be on a boat helping sail and fully understand what is going on but when the instructor says okay now it's your turn to do it, you tighten up a bit. Docking is hands down the scariest part especially on a monohull. Another great video guys! And OMG next is Vietnam!!!!

Sierra And Billy, thanks for sharing your sailing lessons. Smart to learn from others as well as our own experiences. I struggled a bit before making this comment, however I feel it is my duty as a sailor. You should know that the information you were given for your instructions on tacking relative to apparent wind was incorrect. ie " if your apparent wind is 45 degrees, and after your tack it is 45 on the other tack, the boat did not make a 90 degree turn. It was closer to 105-110 degree turn. It is your true wind angle, not apparent that will determine how many degrees your tack, or jibe will be. In your case during your lesson your true wind angle was about 55 to 60 degrees. Your wind instrument could tell you. Remember, once you start moving the apparent wind will move forward creating a closer angle. In light air with fast boats this changes quite a bit. If the instructions provided in the sailing lessons video were used significant miss calculations will accur. In your case you had to fall off from your 90 degree expected coarse change, trim the sails in a bit, or live with the sails luffing a bit. Please consider exploring this on line or any good sailing/racing book. You can make the calculations using vectors ( lines on paper that represent speed and relative angle) quite easily. Thanks for you channel, and sharing all that you do. PS I live on my 65' ketch Pacific High with my girl Cheryl Snyder, who was a solo sailor who you met in Manatee Pocket while refurbishing your lagoon.

That was awesome thanks for sharing. Great refresher. I too get insecure helming and haven’t docked since day 1….need to change that 😊

Great job sailing the canoe. The fact that you earned that boat by building it is huge. That was a long commitment and then the race on top of it. Dynamite footage BTW!! NOW, please show us a quick look at the 1160, we have waited long enough. Also,, you guys are probably at the top of your game in all things,plus being one of my most watched sailing channels. Your sailing, boat work, and being friends along with La Vagabond, Delos, M & J, RAN, Athena and Atticus and the O'kelleys, (do they sail anymore? Just joking.) are my favorites, hands down!!
We Ran Out of Fuel on a 100-mile [windless] Passage. (all my fault)
