Older generation Atlas Six Axle Loco needs a bit of TLC before I install a DCC decoder.

You weren't kidding on how easy it is to work on an atlas! I thought blue boxes were easy maybe I need to find some atlas engines now lol

I find that Atlas locomotives are almost as reliable as Kato’s, pretty easy to work on especially the N scale models. Great tune up, Dave!

Hey Dave, I am working on a Atlas F7, same generation as your SD24. Mine does not have a can motor in it. This has the square frame with open sides. Tried to hook up a decoder to it and the motor got really hot. So, I trashed that motor and for right now stuck a Bachmann motor in it. Runs pretty well. Keep up the good work! Scale Trains on the way.

Well, thanks to you, I know how to do maintenance on my own Atlas Yellow Box stuff, even if it _is_ a bit finnicky to work on. One I had picked up recently needed a coupler replacement, though I shouldn't need pliers to pop the pins that hold them in place. Hmph, I guess the days before proper coupler boxes and embedded roadbed track really _were_ barbarous.

I love your Scotts accent my father was of Scotts descent and when speaking to older members of the family that is the accent I remember.

Atlas locomotives of this era (SD24, GP38/GP40, FP7, SD35) were made by Roco of Austria and the motor was, at the time one of the best then available.

I enjoy my Atlas engines. That being said, the plastic they use gets brittle over time. I do not have any of the older locos without that same black clip not being broken. I usually remove the brown "wiring" towers. A single 3D printed shelf will most likely work better. I have removed the motor on one and replaced it with a smaller KATO motor and have been quite happy. My big fear is breaking the truck as it appears to be the same plastic as the towers. As for the black retaining clip on the trucks, in todays day and age it might be easy to render a 3D printed replacement which may be less brittle over time and if not, reprinting will most likely still be an option. The truck however will be much more complicated (and grainy) as a 3D print with current tech level. As for the red gears, they appear to hold up well.

It has allot of gears and will never be a silent runner, but I suspect the fly wheels are out of balance and that is causing the loud humming. You need to run it in your hand and see if it is vibrating to be sure. Great video, Jersey Bill

If the plastic is delrin, you will not be able to super glue, Elmer's glue or any other kinda glue the pieces together. Delrin is rugged but you almost always have to use epoxy on delrin plastic. Cheers from eastern TN

I think the hole in the truck case is there for adding a bit of oil.

Too noisy, need to take that all apart and inspect everything, including the driveshaft and motor. My guess is adding a decoder is not gonna help.
