As someone who played the Zelda oracle games on my gameboy color (which had little booklets explaining some stuff) before I Iearned english, this game really captures that unique sense of discovery as you're basically also are learning a language as part of the puzxzles. I imagine it's especially fresh for native english speakers, as they would never have had that experience naturally.

I specifically remember learning the word "Key" among others by asking my parents while playing in the backseat of our car, I'd just ask the meaning of random words I saw a lot and couldn't place.

I remember my dad downloaded me a fuckton of games on the R4 cardrige for the Nintendo DS. Most of those games were only available in English and I was 6yo at most, so I had to learn by understanding the visual clues. I remember not even knowing how to save the game and had to start my pokemon diamond playthrough from scratch a few times, fully believing you had to complete the game in one go. I kept the Nintendo on and on charge for a few days after the 4th reset, and it took me almost a week to realize it couldn't be how it was supposed to work and maybe I should have asked my parents for a translation of at least the menu

The way chat is constantly amazed by simple 1+1 is so annoying too. He sees a tuning fork, says, I saw a house with a music symbol on the map and they're all mind blown he put two music related things together. Are they all dumb or just parasocial and worshiping Oliver like a genius. So confusing.
@schmidtleo_01
@schmidtleo_01 29 күн бұрын
@@Erin-000 I think that's honestly a byproduct of stream chats. People always seem excessively awestruck by the tiniest things (though Oliver's playthrough has clearly been very impressive so far) and, on the other hand, excessively intolerant at the slightest oversight or missed detail. I just think the social mechanism of stream chats makes it so that every reaction is exacerbated.

The deluxe edition of the game comes with a physical copy of the book! And I believe there’s a hardcover of the booklet you can buy on its own. (But you really should only buy it after you’ve completed the game because collecting the book pages is a great part of the first playthrough).

@pramitpratimdas8198
@pramitpratimdas8198 Ай бұрын
wait is it really a knowledge based game, as in you can finish a new game in one sitting if you have the knowledge? I had heard that Tunic was like a zelda/souls inspired metroidvania, kinda like Hollow Knight
@AluRooftop
@AluRooftop Ай бұрын
@@pramitpratimdas8198 Nah it's still VERY inspired in zelda and souls, but at it's heart it's an informational puzzle game where you can just skip 95% of the game and go straight to the ending if you know how to but [MINOR SPOILERS] (about the scope of the game) It's sorta not even the point of the game since a normal playthrough "ends" without you discovering SO MUCH. There's explicit "post game content" (which you can do before actually finishing but still) and there's even crazy ARG shit beyond that which as far as i know hasn't been fully solved yet.
@pramitpratimdas8198
@pramitpratimdas8198 Ай бұрын
@@AluRooftop well dark souls require knowledge for progression as well but I wouldn't call it a purely knowledge based progression - that would be something like Outer wilds or Obra dinn. It's a severely underpopulated genre
@AluRooftop
@AluRooftop Ай бұрын
@@pramitpratimdas8198 It's cause it's SUPER SCARY to design progression tracks around revealing/hiding info from the player. Not only is it hard to make satisfying (not feel arbitrary or that you just stubled into discovering stuff), but also if it fails it's bound to fail spectacularly (i love the witness but god is it a bad game). On top of that the whole internet culture around games makes it super scary to make games that are vulnerable to spoilers. Unless there's a classic roguelike renaissance (like noita) i'm pretty sure we can only expect more nieche artsy games or narative-driven adventures with this sort of stuff. Tunic really is an anomaly with how much -base mechanics- it hides for the booklet progression.

Oh helllll yeah! I'm so excited you're playing this game. It really is an excellent game for you. I've decided recently that this is my new favorite game of all time, barely beating out Breath of the Wild. The music is phenomenal, the visuals are either phenomenally ethereal, beautiful, or cute at any point, the combat is great, the puzzles are amazing. Truly Fez-level at some points. Maybe even beyond. Interesting that you're doing this as a stream, as this game is very easily spoiled, but you almost never look at chat, so I guess it works! I don't know how you can stand playing with low health for so long - I always get crazy anxiety whenever I'm at low life in this game, and end up sprinting straight back to the nearest bonfire. haha I'm so glad to see you enjoying this game though, and I can't wait to see you piece together its mysteries. You probably already know this, but please don't look things up except as an ABSOLUTE last resort. But if you get to the point where it's either look something up or just quit the game entirely, I'd rather you still be able to experience the game - so please don't give up on it if you ever feel like you've hit a wall with something! (Some people will probably complain at you about it - but your enjoyment is more important than their obsession with purism.)
