Hey Man, this was a very Good Down To Earth Video for the "simple guy". I only play as a recreational player. I'm 71 YO, retired, who resurrected playing Drums after 50 Years [1969]. I've learned lots on the WEB - all about Drum Heads & Tuning, stuff I knew nothing about way back When. This video shows how much Micing the drums affects the delivered Sound. The Miced up Snare sounds is good to me. I like that POP with just a little overtone. From watching this I see now How Much the Mic affects the sound. I've been using a HD Dry Batter head on my Brass and Maple Snares. I have them both Cranked up high on both sides. That gets me close to what I like to hear. I will tell you a "weird" thing I experienced. I placed my DW Design Series Brass 14 X 6.5 Snare on my 16 inch Floor tom to get it out of the way. I played the Maple snare during a playing session, and during a Fill, I hit the DW snare on top of the Tom. Bingo - that delivered the sound I was looking for!! Ludwig Supraphonic like - Jon Bonham sound. When I took the Snare off the tom, it was not the same. The same result when putting it in the Snare stand. One poster on a drum forum said that I was actually playing 2 Drums at the same time (I have G2 coated heads on the Toms). Another poster said that I may have Invented a New Style Snare Stand. Any idea of what's going on ? BTW, no matter how tune the Snare, I cannot get to that same sound compared to be on the Floor Tom?

Oooo that's an interesting finding bro 🤔 Have you given muffling a go for that snare? (putting a wallet on top, or duct tape, or moongels). With metal snares, which tend to have lots of ringing overtones, a thicker head like you've put on can help a lot, but sometimes creating the right amount of muffling can work wonders too 👍

I now you tune your snares by ear/feel, but generally would you say (for medium and high tunings on the batter ) that your bottom snare usually ends up being lower than the top head?
@Daddynixterdrums
@Daddynixterdrums Жыл бұрын
I am dead shocked that you use one of my fav snare heads… and yet you don’t crank the living 💩 out of it lol. For me, I like a lot more crack and more sensitivity/response. So I love the p77 CRANKED for a dry focused and responsive crack. But that’s just me 🤷🏽‍♂️

So Where do you have the screw and throw off switch when you’re putting the snares back on? Do you have that screw tight, loose, somewhere midway? is the switch up or down? or does that really even matter in your opinion when it comes to trying to get the best sound out of your snare?

This was awesome. I had no idea that the throw off switch could be used to get a desired sound. I thought it was just used to hold the snare gate to the head. So what do you recommend if one of the toms vibrates when the snare is struck because of similar frequencies?
@JRODSULLIVAN
@JRODSULLIVAN 2 жыл бұрын
I suggest leaving the drums as they are if you have them tuned how you want. If it is noticeable in the mix, I’ll just add a gate to that particular tom.
