Took a hike down the Tunnel Brook Trail this past weekend. It was a great trail with some nice pond views and some genuinely easy White Mountains walking. As I finished the mileage of the trail so quick I debated going up over Mt Moosilauke but decided against doing so due to snow / ice possibility and my lack of any traction. In hindsight, I am extremely glad I skipped.
I ended up hiking back to my car by about 7:30-8am and felt off. I was very cold and just did not feel normal. At first, i thought maybe it was just because I got up at 3:45am and my body was just thrown off. I got home, showered, and still felt freezing. Decided to go to bed very early and woke up in the middle of the night, dripping sweat and coughing. Tested positive for covid on Monday morning. I have been essentially sleeping and doing absolutely nothing since last Sunday but am finally feeling better.
If I had made my way up the mountain and couldnt make it through the possible snow, it could have gotten bad for me very quickly. In hindsight, I am extremely happy I turned around when I did.

During the pandemic I was leaving trail and summit names out of many of my videos due to issues with massive overcrowding on the trail, as well as, issues in regards to what I would consider uneducated or irresponsible hiker behavior. The most notable of which was trash, and human waste / toilet paper I was finding directly on, or just off, trail. I kept some of the trail and location names in this video. If you are using this video for planning purposes, please use the trail responsibly and try to follow leave no trace principles. It only takes one person not doing so to ruin it for everyone. If you are a newer hiker please watch this video before heading out on trail: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ms6Uaqhl162tp3U.html Here is an article about the issue with trash and human waste specifically in the Whites www.nhpr.org/post/trouble-trails-forest-service-grapples-crowds-trash-and-human-waste#stream/0 Another article about Max Patch (an iconic part of the Appalachian Trail) and the issues occurring there www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2020/09/23/max-patch-residents-campers-creating-safety-hazards-mountain/5858936002/ Here you can learn about leave no trace (LNT) principles lnt.org/why/7-principles/ www.nps.gov/articles/leave-no-trace-seven-principles.htm

Chris I wish you would go back to not naming trails, etc. As a long term hiker/backpacker I feel half the fun/adventure was researching and then encountering unknown conditions.

Ended up extremely happy I skipped the hike up Moosilauke. Im not saying it was a sign from the mountains but... actually, thats exactly what i am saying. Ended up feeling off when I got back to my car. Was very cold and had the chills. Started the drive home and still felt weird. Got home and just remained freezing. Went to bed early, woke up the next morning drenched in sweat, coughing, the works. Ended up testing positive for Covid that morning. Have been sitting around literally all week sleeping and recovering. Essentially back in action now though but very glad I did not attempt my way up that mountain in hindsight

Hello: Great Video. My wife and are moving to NH end of June. We just bought a house and me just being recently retired am looking forward to the backpacking trips in this beautiful state. While up there last week, house hunting, we had a day to drive around and found so many trails for day hikes and overnighters. Next year I plan on doing the AT. I have maps of the Whites and Southern NH and am looking for trails that are not overly busy with people. It really makes me mad when I see so much trash. We are moving from South Dakota, where for the last 23 years there have hiked and backpacked most of the trails. Time to get back to actual trees, not having to carry 3 liters of water every time, because of lack of streams and the hot dry weather. Thanks for your videos.

Nice Tom! I highly recommend the White Mountains Guidebook and maps. The maps specifically are I use on the regular still. The guthook/farout guides app too comes in handy for water source info. Almost the entire area of the Whites are available on the app for purchase as well as some stuff in Maine which wont be too far from you either

@@ChrisGoesOutdoors I received the White Mountains Guidebook and maps for Christmas last year. At my retirement party, my department gave me a picture of the 48 4,000 footers and map guide book to with it. As I complete the climbs, I get to scratch off the mountain top of each mountain. Can't wait to start those. I also have farout ready to go. Thanks for the help and advice, I am so looking forward to get out and enjoy NH.

I did the Tunnel Brook-Benton-Carriage Road-Glencliff loop in November, and loved it. As you mentioned the terrain on Tunnel Brook was uniquely cool. I know the stats make it sound steep, but the Benton Trail never felt that way to me. I’d highly recommend visiting it again sometime.

It hit me like that too, feeling off one day then the full body slam. Take it slow, the full recovery can take a few weeks. Get some sun, I did 20 minutes a day when it wasn’t cloudy a couple Aprils ago. I’d hang the hammock and underquilt, go out there in just shorts and make some vitamin D.

Chris, you don’t need to hit a summit to have a great hike. Everyone is doing Moosilauke. I live in Connecticut and have three videos on it myself. Tunnel Brook looks very cool. I like your off the beaten path videos the most. I just got over COVID myself after two years of masking, vaccination and a booster shot. It finally got me. My symptoms were very mild, honestly sounds like you got it worse than I did. Speedy recovery and take care. John

It was a very cool trail. Better than expected. Glad to be back up and running. I cant even imagine getting up or near the summit, starting to feel like crap and then possibly having to turn around due to conditions, or powering over while still feeling worse and worse. Would have made for a very rough Sunday haha

Michael: If you do go anytime soon, full tent recommended, unless you like feeding the black flies! I hiked up Mt. Cardigan a week ago (on May 10), which is 25 miles south of Moosilauke as the black flies fly. And fly they did! They were pretty thick and unpleasant whenever I stopped. Chris: Great video (again!). Thank you for all that you share.
