A train enthusiast has devoted 30 years of his life to his model railroad, which could be worth more than $3m. Howard Zane, 77 spends most of his time in the basement of his home in Columbia, Maryland working on his 3,000 square foot masterpiece that he made from scratch. His fascination began at the age of three when his father gave him a train set.
Videographer / director: Ruaridh Connellan
Producer: Nora Hakramaj, Nick Johnson
Editor: Sonia Estal, Kyle Waters

ABSOLUTELY! We ALL should be so lucky Since I've returned to the hobby in 2011 (took a 'break' from it in 1975 not long after I turned 17 to chase girls), that's been a concern. My ex-wife wouldn't have had a problem with it, nor did my last girlfriend who was fascinated by the layout at my club, but the next woman.....I wonder....

Saatanan Saatana Yup. Oh btw, religious people that aren't able to question their faith and acknowledge the fact that they have no evidence, and that if they would be born in arabia they would be muslims but still believe the same thing, are a product of evolution. In times we used to survive in tribes, if one was born skeptic, it would've been either put to death, either expelled, either ignored by all the other individuals of the tribe. So, a moron with a low iq and no critical thinking would've had an evolutionary advantage. Therefore, religious people evolved to be religious. That's ironic, isn't it? So, through random genetic mutations we became atheists :| Amen... :|

I understand your sentiment; but I don't see it that way. This artist simply found his main interest in art at age 3; not unlike a painter or illustrator, many professional athletes, dancers, or others. He just happens to work in 3D like a sculpter, architect, fashion designer, etc. 'Toy' model trains make us think childhood, but it would indeed be rare for a child to be able to create art like he does, amass a small financial fortune, be married three times, own homes, cars, etc. He is an artist, and a very impressive one. This is not a hobby; this is/and has been, his singular lifelong pursuit in: childhood, work, and retiremtent. His life has mostly been consumed in his art and his biggest passion is clearly art--the visual, images, scenery, atmosphere, expression, re-creation, historical...

Whenever I see someone that is into something like this, I think of the song "Whatever gets you through the night, is alright..." and that is what is is all about, you need something to focus on that you enjoy to get you through life. And as long as it doesn't negatively impact others, go for it. The cherry on top is when you have a partner that understands and allows you to follow your dreams.....it doesn't get any better.

People act like the money spent on a hobby is ridiculous but often overlook the fact we spend way too much money on new cars and addictions. His third wife made a good point it keeps him out of the pubs. She always knew where he was. Trains, electric trucking and ham radio kept me home as a kid too.

Just absolutely stunning, what a layout & I love the minute attention to detail. The way he has finished the layout up the back wall with the greenery & trees is the best finish I have ever seen it blends so well back into the wall it gives you a feeling that it just continues on. He is also running my personal favorite steam engines, I think they look way better than a modern railway setup & they dont look odd or out of place when they run slow up a grade, it gives you the time to wonder at all the moving parts & imagine it all in the real world. Anyway I could ramble on for hours over this brief look at what in my opinion is better than Wonderland in Germany. Well done Mate it is a credit to you & your highly skilled passion. Best Regards, Steve.

That last shot was the coolest of all. It was like being a passenger, on the train... maybe a small boy, with his head out the window. Watching in wonderment, as the train goes into the dark tunnel. Wondering, what he'll see inside? As the walls feel close, the only thing he sees is his own shadow. Made by the lights inside the car, on the tunnel wall. Ahead, the Engine's light floods the darkness and the clattering of steel wheels on a steel rails, bounce off the walls. Closing his eyes, he imagines the Singing Brakeman, strumming his guitar. Suddenly the voice of Jimmie Rodgers, fills the air as he sings..."Ridin' on an eastbound freight train, speeding through the night. Hobo Bill, the railroad Bum..." Ah! Just once again? To take a long train ride in a Pullman Car, from the 1950's that's lavish looking and gets Room Service. Being pulled by a Period Steam Engine. What a dream! That's what these trains represent.

I’ve been lucky enough to see this incredible layout several times with the first time being about 30 years ago before each of the 2 large additions he made to the basement. Since he added on to the basement he also added on to the upper part of the house each time too. The layout as I last saw it was about 4 times the size of the original. If you ever do get to see it yourself keep your eyes open for all the “hidden humor” that Howard built into many different scenes.
