We will turn a jerk-free cam with a homebuild copy turning attachment for any lathe. This cam is very roughly similar to cams of famous Honda CB 750 Four.

Simply unbelievable. This channel is a treasure trove! I’m curious that if you can apply the same turning techniques from cam turning to piston turning…… perhaps a video about turning a piston in the lathe. I know pistons are “barrel taper” shaped.

Just a little help on the camshaft profile of a cam lobe. If it's going into an engine with a roller type lifer/follower/tappet the roller lobes can be flat across width wise. BUT for a engine with a hydraulic or mechanical solid lifter push rod or flat tappet design, the cam lobes have to be profiled with a crown in the middle or center of the lobes. This is done on purpose for the proper abilities to cause the tappet or lifter to actually rotate in their bores. This was found to have a much better life span of a flat tappet or camshaft lobe by constantly turning the lifter/tappet in the bore by using a crowned lobe. It makes sense to have the tappet or lifter spinning for the reduction of friction wear on the same exact point every time it opens. It will only turn a little bit at a time, and maybe take many rotations to make it a full revolution around the bore. But it's definitely a game changer in the advancement of flat tappet camshaft designs and is proven to show much better durability and longer life without wearing down either end nearly as quickly. BUT for a roller application, the crown defeats the purpose, you don't want your lifter or tappet spinning, that's why they are locked in place to keep the roller wheels from moving off center, so just a little FYI on camshaft profiles I wanted to share with you. It's pretty cool to see it done on a lathe, over here US they are done by a grinder so you have a lot more control over the shape of the profiles and it's a lot quicker too. It's always something to consider doing, I own a metal lathe and have messed around with cutting my own lobes before, but usually end up finishing the end product with a grinding wheel and thin belt sander to get the desired effects. Very cool build though making the follower/copier to make your own lobes though!

Incredible job! I thought you might have a problem with the size of the follower compared to the cutting tool, could you make something like a tool post grinder but with with a milling cutter the same diameter of the follower to cut the blanks instead of a single point tool? Did you manually calculate the angles and depths of cut for the master cam, or is there some software that can do this?
@prof-rieg2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, I've considered using a kind of milling cutter but this would be milling not turning. Anyway,cthis should work. In fact, I've calculated the depths and angles for milling the master cam, and the data was taken from the well-known (in Germany and Austria) book of Ludwig Apfelbeck.

MfG Micha
