We've been looking for a car trailer for what feels like years - and everything up here is 3k and above for worn out, rusted, no-title-having trailers. So I figured, why not pick up and old frame and make one myself! In this episode we handle all the basic fabrication related stuff to get everything ready for paint!

Need a part 2. I wanna see some horizontal gusset/steps on the angle iron for the fender. (Use the old camper step.)

It’s covered in snow at the moment, but I have some stuff showing up for it this week. Hoping to get the j channel on, and build the ramp mounts, plus the new taillights.

I got a 1973 20ft camper I'm thinking about making into a trailer like this, however my rims are rusted completely through and lugs and nuts are so rusted and corroded, they won't come off. Its also a channeled frame. But for $450, I don't think its too bad?

Should be able to make it work! With it being a channel frame you may want to build a “platform” on top of the channels to help stiffen it all up

The axles are almost dead center of the trailer if remember correctly

What are car trailers going price wise used?

It fluctuates quite a bit (at least up here in NY) when I picked this up car trailers were 4-5k. Even for 3k, you were getting a pretty beat trailer. Since then, trailers are now around 2k for a crappy one and 3-4k for a reasonable one.

Coming soon! Time is being split between three other projects (two of which are full fab motor swaps.) We still have to dove the rear of this and then get it wired - it doesn’t fit in the garage so it’s abit chilly to work on 😂 oh and I keep forgetting to buy another bottle of argon

That’s the silliest thing I ever heard ( and that’s put nicely) the trailer is like not even a full 3 feet off the ground what’s gonna happen if you jump off it? Worried it might cause arthritis in your 60’s? 😂😂

Every ex camper frame is gonna have different axles & different axle spacing. So lug pattern and fender length could be different. The 2x2 angle I got from my shop for scrap price. Then a wiring harness depends on frame length as well.

The problem for old camper frames for car haulers is they are normally too light duty and narrow. They make decent flatbed though

I work in the structural steel industry, you’re not wrong with ratings. However, generally box frames are the best (this is a 2x4 box frame.) If you stiffen it like I have it does a better job of distributing the load. I’ll have to look more, but I imagine the axles and springs are good for a 3-4.5k load (would make sense for a camper this size.) Since I only plan on hauling cars with it, I think it’ll do the job.
