Do I have too much of a good thing?
Only one way to find out! I turned minimalist in this makeup experiment, packing only the bare "necessities" in my makeup bag as I traveled for a couple of months. Did I like the experience? Do I want to downsize and simplify my makeup? Or did I miss the rest of my maximalist collection while I was gone? How did this minimalist experiment change my attitude towards my cosmetics? And what will that mean for the future of my collection?

How does one develop a sense of style? And how can we do it sustainably - both financially and environmentally? By enjoying and creatively using what we already have. By streamlining those things with thoughtful declutters. By developing awareness of how we use our stuff to encourage wiser decisions about the cosmetics, clothing and any other items we purchase. Sounds simple, but it's easier said than done. I've certainly been stumbling my way through it - let's stumble in style together!

I am a "minimalist" in some categories: foundation, primer, setting spray, concealer (and even with eyeshadows my collection is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than it used to be). However, I have an abundance of eyeliners and blushes, which to me are my flourish products: I can do the exact same style of eye look every day and whether I have a matching or contrasting color in the waterline makes a HUGE difference. That's how I keep things fun for me, even as I'm attempting to cut down on makeup purchases

THIS!!! I think you hit on a great point here, Morgan. We can be minimalists AND maximalists at the same time, tweaking the amount we have in various categories based on how they serve us.

I only got into makeup in the last year or so….and I am OLD. Now, I have waaaaaay too much of it and would be able to enjoy it more if it were slimmed down. My next challenge is to figure out what to keep and how to dispose of the makeup that I’m not keeping. That seems easy, but it’s really not. I like all of it - that’s why I bought it. It’s just toooo much stuff. So…that’s why I watch you! Thank you for the inspiration!

I think a lot of us are in a similar boat - too much of a good thing. I'm still trying to slim my collection down, even now. It's great that we can all support each other on our journeys. If you have gently used makeup you would like to donate, Project Beauty Share might be a good option - they donate it to non-profit organizations. It's lovely to hear from you, Allison!

To me a minimalist collection means having only one option, maybe a couple for color cosmetics, for each category. Specially foundation, concealer, brows, etc. I would consider your travel make up definitely minimalist 😅 It is a tricky balance satisfying the creative mind and the overwhelming amount of choice sometimes, but that's something we learn by challenging ourselves like you did during your travels 🥰

Woohoo! I'm glad I managed it... despite the fact that I cheated a little bit in the eyeshadow department. ;-) You're right. It can be tricky balancing choice with creativity. Some of the best ideas come from limitation. But I still think I'm going to stick with my maximalist collection anyway. At least as long as I enjoy it this much. 😂

That esum make up bag looks so useful - I like the harder sides, feels a lot safer than the less structured bags out there! It can be difficult to balance a love of makeup with a reasonable collection, and I really like the focus on getting joy out of using and experiencing the collection as it currently exists, versus getting joy out of just adding to the collection over and over!
@TheStyleStumbler
@TheStyleStumbler 2 ай бұрын
It really is! I've had so much makeup smooshed and broken over the years that I really value the more structured bag. I'm still learning what a reasonable collection is, but I think I'm getting closer now that I'm finding the balance between the joy of gratitude vs the joy of newness.

I love this video!! I see my makeup time exactly the same way you do. It’s my self care time. It’s enjoyable for me! I’d actually rather not wear makeup than rush and slap a few things on haphazardly. I’m fine not wearing makeup. If I put makeup on, I’m going to enjoy the experience. I haven’t always been in this phase. I’ve been a person who never wears makeup (med school) , someone who owns one blush, one powder, one mascara (college, practicing medicine, and when my kids were young)….and now I’ve got multiples of every step and makeup is self care and a hobby I really enjoy. All of the phases are good and have their place for me. I’m sure I’ll be somewhere else 10 years from now!

That's great! It sounds like we're both currently in the same phase. I'd also rather not wear makeup at all than have to rush through the process. It's definitely an evolution though. I didn't wear makeup at all for the first 23 years of my life, and when I began I was happy with my just the most basic items. Now I'm a fiend. But who knows? Maybe we'll both become minimalists again in the future. ;-)

I think you did great! I am a minimalist who is also a makeup lover. I think the sweet spot between too much and too little is a very personal divide. It’s when I am overwhelmed with choices versus feeling like not enough choice. For me that’s worked out balancing joy and overwhelm. Choice is only fun when it’s true favourites which means being ready to let go of things that aren’t perfect for me.

While I’m far from being a minimalist, my goal is to get there one day. I’m only buying things that are a must buy but no longer impulse buying. I’m currently focusing on using up all my product and creating a weekly basket of products to rediscover and to see if I still like them. Through this process, is how I’m actually making the decision to declutter or to keep it and enjoy it. I definitely don’t follow the rule of tossing products based on a company’s so called use by date. I only toss it if it’s visibly gone bad or caused a breakout, otherwise, I’m trying to get my money’s worth 😁

I loved this video! I feel similarly about my makeup application time. As a mom of young kiddos, it’s one of the few things that I do that is simply just for me and just for the joy of it. I’m fine not wearing it, and I’d rather skip it entirely than rush and panic my way through a routine. One thing that is helpful in minimizing a (definitely) maximalist collection over here is really experimenting. I wore a gorgeous eye look from good quality shadows two days in a row, and it was such a luxurious feeling that it helped me part with lovely but definitely inferior eye shadows right afterward. If I have quality things, why keep the ones that will not perform as well? It’s been a slow journey for me, bc I *think* that I love it all. But I only have so much time for expiration dates and only one face, so prioritizing what I truly love is essential!
@TheStyleStumbler
@TheStyleStumbler 2 ай бұрын
Thank you! I completely agree. Sometimes taking a few moments to indulge in something just for ourselves can be so refreshing. And I'm with you: I'd rather go without wearing makeup than have to rush through the process. It sounds like you and I might be on a similar journey. I spent my "panning for gold" series comparing similar items in my collection, keeping only the ones that worked best for me. Because if I only have one face, I'd rather just use the product that works best for me instead of keeping second-rate versions of it. It's been a slow journey for me for the same reason! 😂

The sounds of your demonstrating the makeup bag are so satisfying. I see a lot of gold nuggets and tried and true favorites in your minimalist kit. And its good that you have ways for them to be flexible. You really light up talking about eyeshodw. Obivously a favorite joy bringer of yours.🤩😍 There is something to the phrase "integrated smudger" that makes me think more things should have one. You need a shirt or a sign that reads "Swatch goblin does palette hopping for cardio" 😂🤣😂 I think you hit on something really important in this video withe minimalist vs. maximalist discussion. I think too many people have this simplified idea that being a maximalist just means having a lot of stuff, whereas a minimalist doesn't. The quanititative argument certainly has merit both as far as shelf space and cost outlay, but there is also a qualitative arguemnt to be made that you touched on wonderfully. You have learned how to get more and better use out of and appreciation for what you have, which to me points to a perspective free of any isms. Also through your no-buy and your adiagio beauty projects, you have changed your thinking habits as to use and purchasing of what make up is in your collection, so the utlity increases. I can never be accused of being a minimalist, I like stuff too much. But I will say that things I have learned, partly from following you, have helped me have a greater appreciation for how I collect what I do. Sheer quantity is no longer a thing I worry about. I want the gold nuggets I can truly appreciate. I feel like you've discovered that as well. I think having an understanding of how we collect provides a better viewpoint to view what we have and gets a way from the binary choices and simplistic spectrums and instead creates a space where we can enjoy and engage with our stuff in a way that brings simplicity. And that's about as philisophical as I want ot get without a pipe or leather elbow patches.😆
@TheStyleStumbler

I may or may not play that makeup bag like a drum sometimes. ;-) Yeah, who knew that colored dirt could bring so much joy? It's the simple things in life. 😂 I might have to make that shirt. 😂 You're right. As much as humans like to simplify things, make them black and white, everything's always a grey area. Including minimalism and maximalism. As someone who has glimpses into your collection, you seem to do a wonderful job curating it. You are so right: the greater our understanding of how we interact with our collections, the more levels there are in which we can enjoy engaging with the things we choose. BRING OUT THE PIPE! BRING OUT THE ELBOW PATCHES!

I'm am constantly on the hunt for several things a pipe, elbow patches, and a pith helmet among them. 😂

It's so interesting to see the results of your minimalist experiment. I am not surprised by your conclusion of being a makeup maximalist but not because I think of you as someone who just likes having a lot of stuff, but because of your distinctly detailed love and appreciation for the different nuances within makeup. Your "Makeup Monster" gets joy from experiencing different textures, finishes, and options (even if they are "dirt-coloured dirt" and varying shades of beige ;) ). And that is a beautiful thing! I can definitely relate to wanting to simplify your life in response to feeling overwhelmed. The deep dive you have done into your collection and adagio beauty journey have culminated into such a beautiful and approachable mindset towards makeup. Thank you for always inspiring us!

I think maximalists should try this once just to get to know their make-up habits and products better. I was forced to be a minimalist after moving and wasn’t able to unpack and set up the rest of my collection for months. For 4 months I was confined to one make-up bag I packed for the move. It helped me understand what I really enjoyed about putting on my make-up, which products/finishes/functions I really liked and what I did/didn’t miss at all. It changed my make-up life and helped me embrace maximalism in certain areas and minimalism in others. Thank you for sharing this concept with us. Also, your audio quality is like audiobook level. i'm nowhere near being a minimalist makeup user, but my behavior towards buying and wearing makeup changed since the pandemic, as it happened to many people. i think that having to stay at home, wearing masks and prioritizing what to spend money on changed our mentality on consummerism. makeup isn't essential and it's expensive! also, my makeup style changed as well. i loved a full face with a heavy base, thick eyeliner, thick brows, blinding highlighter lol now my makeup style is so basic and i think it flatters me more! i realized i "loved" certain things because they were the trend at the time, not because they flattered me. even though i spend a lot less time putting on makeup, it's like you said, it's my most treasured moment of my day. it's me time, i get to be with myself, being my best girly self lol

Yes! Those few moments of being our best girly selves are so valuable. And that's a good point - that we often like things because they're trendy, but don't often consider if they actually suit us. Hi Carol! It's always fun to meet another makeup maximalist. 🥳 Do you have a favorite cosmetic category? It was really challenging for me to learn how to let go of makeup, too, so I can relate. Even though I've been "putter decluttering" for the past two years, it's still hard. Just in case it helps: I haven't regretted giving anything away. I think the key for me is that I was always able to justify letting certain items go because I discovered that I owned something else that did the same job, only better.

@@TheStyleStumbler Knowing that you were able to, gives me hope. I don’t mind having a larger size collection but do aspire to have everything accesible and better organized, and that every items brings me joy. Since i have more makeup that fits in my drawers it is difficult to find things. I think my favorite things are concealers, foundations (i truly don’t know why) and eyeshadow palettes. I haven’t bought an eyeshadow palette in forever since i have too many, but have 3 or 4 on my wishlist of things i know i don’t need but want eventually in my collection. I do think that i have gotten better knowing my style and buying stuff that work for me and will use a lot, but what i don’t know is how to declutter or downsize my collection. It is not sentimental or anything, i just feel that since i bought it, maybe some day i will use it or fall in love with it. Need to do a better job decluttering.

@@carolmsepulvedasoto3607 You have no idea how much I can relate to that. Even though I've been (very) slowly downsizing my collection over the past two years, I still don't have a way to perfectly organize everything. If I only had a few products they would be: Lancome Ultra Wear Foundation, Givenchy Prism libre Powder, Mac Peach Blossom lipstick, Mac Pro Long wear concealer, Mac blush New Romance, Essence lash princess mascara, Catrice Slim matic brow pencil, Hourglass bronzer luminous bronze light and my all time favorite eye shadow palette Dior Soft Cashmere. Edit: and lipliner Mac Whirl or Bobbi Brown Pale Mauve.

Oooo - that is such a great list of items! And they sound like they'd look beautiful together. Some of my favorites are in there (the Givenchy powder, MAC Whirl, and Hourglass).

I really appreciate your approach to beauty, and also your great willingness to question your relationship to it. Certainly what’s minimalist/maximalist or too much/not enough varies from person to person. I think the sweet spot is having enough that you’re satisfied with your choices but not having so much that you can’t enjoy every item as much as you’d like. I have found that the vast majority of beauTubers (was that what you called it?) and surely more than a fair few of us mere beauty consumers have sometimes lost sight of the using and enjoying of it within reason versus the rush of… well, buying it, right? You can love eyeshadow, the colors, the glitter and shine, the packaging, the application and artistry, but still and all, there is always a point of TOO MUCH. Side note: why do you think cost per use/wear isn’t a thing in makeup like it is with clothing?

Thanks so much for keeping me company on this journey Angela. You're right - we each have to define "too much" and "not enough" for ourselves. And I'm learning that, although I can be quite "extra" when it comes to things like makeup, I'm quite the minimalist in other areas. A couple of years ago I was definitely among the beautyTubers/normal consumers who lost sight of the balance between the joy of having vs the joy of getting. I'm still working on it, but it's getting easier. Where do you think you fall on that spectrum? As for cost per use: I don't know why that kind of thinking is more prevalent with regard to clothing than cosmetics. I wonder if it's because using our clothing is more obvious? (Laundry, wear/tear). Or maybe because clothing is a necessity that everyone wears, so that broader societal perspective across all classes created more organic ties to the economics of the wardrobe? Hmmm... that's a great question. As a side note, @TooMuchTash was the one who first got me thinking about cost per use with her videos. Her perspective was my gateway to a more grounded approach to my makeup.

@@TheStyleStumbler thanks for such a thoughtful response. Personally, it’s been a journey for me too, and I think more than anything, the thing that’s really moved the needle for me is simply the awareness of “Oh, I’m in a shopping mindset right now” and interrogating that instead of buying the thing. Speaking of content creators in this vein, Shawna Ripari has referred to that as “non-judgmental noticing,” and it’s a much more gentle and actually effective approach to viewing my purchasing habits. And you know what, sometimes I do let myself buy the thing, but now I take the time to make sure the joy goes beyond the buying: I use the product right away, I use it again and again, even if I don’t immediately like it or know how to make it work, I use it different ways, I put it in project pans-in a way, it feels like I’m committing to my purchases, instead of being ok with it simply being in my collection, hardly used, or using the option of decluttering as a crutch. I feel like there’s more to respond to but I’m pushing up against my arbitrary word quota 😅

@@angelaa.9915 Awareness has been the key for me, too. Shawna definitely had a nugget of wisdom with her "non-judgemental noticing." There is no place for shame in growth. Thanks for a thoughtful response, too! ♥
