Turning On House Sprinklers for Summer Season
In this video, I document turning on my home in-ground sprinkler system to get it ready for Spring and Summer irrigation of my lawn. Sprinkler companies often send flyers in late Winter offering to turn on homeowner's in-ground sprinklers for about the same price they charge to blow-out in-ground irrigation systems. For me, the process seems too easy to pay anyone to do as it's literally just a matter of turning off some water valves then turning them on again in a sequence that basically follows the flow of water from its source to the home irrigation system.
Like any DIY work, if you don't feel confident in your ability to perform certain tasks or your irrigation system is more complex or quirky, by all means call a professional. I choose to do as many tasks myself because I'm usually looking for ways to save money and I also like learning how things work. That doesn't mean I don't make mistakes as you'll see in this video, I'm always learning from my mistakes. I hope you find this video helpful if you do decide to turn-on your own lawn and garden irrigation system. Please subscribe, like and comment to let me know how your experience goes doing this same task on your own. Thanks for watching and check-out my other video mentioned below on blowing-out my in-ground sprinkler system in the Fall.

Nice job! I installed my in-ground sprinkler system using the exact same parts, picked up from Menards for about ~$100.00 almost 15+ years ago now and it's still going strong to this day with good maintenance as you've shown. The only thing I've had to replace was the rubber seal around one of the larger pop-up heads, which as I'm sure you know is about a 5 minute job and no more leaking seal. The sprinkler installation company wanted ~$7000.00 to install it all, and then as you've mentioned, annual maintenance in the fall to blow out the lines and in the spring to set things back up.

Man, that’s fantastic to hear you did it yourself for such savings! Well done, brother! I completely understand on the leaky heads, too. My system must be just about same age as your’s and I’ve dissected heads to replace the seals but last couple times replaced the entire head assembly due to time/convenience and price was pretty reasonable to get all new parts. Thanks for watching and positive comment my friend. I wish you a great Summer!

You should do a video on cleaning and any adjustments of the sprinkler heads that might be necessary. Normally they don't need adjusting, but every so often I've adjusted a couple of mine due to bushes etc. that have grown over the years so that the pattern is best suited for the yard etc.

Excellent idea! It’s funny you mention it since I think this will be an epic season for me in terms of finally having to move many...I mean MANY...heads that are now almost entirely behind Black Hills Spruce trees I planted as tiny saplings over a decade ago that have grown too large for me to simply adjust spray arc and angles. I feel like every year I’m the only guy in my neighborhood who gets sopping wet and dirty up to my elbows obsessively adjusting my spray heads only to have the worst lawn in the area 🤣😆. I will take your suggestion and try to document my sprinkler head battles and post a video about that. Thanks again for watching and the dialog here! Peace, brother!

Question. When you open up the exit valve on the backflow without the zones open, or the drain valves open in the boxes, doesn't the water actually pressurize the air in the underground pipes as the water pushes against the air? I know that pressurized air would just then vent once the zones are turned on, but just curious if I understand what is happening. Actually wondering if that pressure hurts the sprinkler valves then and if it isn't better to have the drain valve cracked in the sprinkler box.

What you describe sounds right to me. I'm not an expert or professional but simply emulating what I've seen past "professionals" doing when I used to pay to have this process done for me. I am careful turning on the supply valves slowly so as not to "shock" the zone actuation assemblies letting the water charge those lines and only fully open the valve after hearing water has stopped flowing. I agree air in the system is being squeezed and pressurized but I don't have access to my deeply-buried underground valves so I can't open drain valves if there are any. I have nine zones and can open only one zone valve at a time. My underground valves are "grouped" together in four different clusters so I'd only be protecting one of the four clusters of valve assemblies opening one zone leaving the other three clusters of valves spread around my front, back and side yards with built-up air pressure pressing against those groups of valve assemblies. Ultimately, I've done this method for over fifteen years and still have my original zone valve assemblies. I'll try to remember to review my control box manual to see if it discusses this topic and you might do the same for your's. Let us know if you find anything recommending what you suggest as I'd prefer to do it properly if we can find a creditable source. Good luck and thanks for bringing up the topic as that's what's great about KZfaq is this exchange of knowledge and experience!
