I loved that Tyler became their friend in the end. He felt like he couldn't be himself so he was jealous of Mei for being so confident. That is why he lashed out at her. When he finally was accepted and could be himself. He made actual friends. Little details like that makes this movie great.

It was definitely a projection. I love that those girls accepted him regardless of how he behaved in the past. Second chances are rarely given, I love that they gave him his.

Yeah I really disliked him, but after realizing that probably no one would have come to his party without Mei hit me. The kids weren't even having fun unless the panda was there. Made me realize he probably doesn't have any REAL friends, is insecure and secretly admires Mei. Notice how he was alone at the concert, too. I'm glad they kinda took him in.

If Inside Out is meant to explore the unhealthy juggling of emotions while expanding upon the gradual loss of preteen innocence, then Turning Red might as well be a full uncensored version of that. It is an advent of puberty, a menstruation metaphor and a sweet but antic allegory for uncomfortable life changes all at once…..and it’s bloody brilliant.

Some things that came to my mind after watching this: Yes, four is a very unlucky number in China. Grandma was doomed to losing card games because her panda was locked into a 4*Town charm. Red is a lucky color in China. Green is opposite red on the color wheel...notice the older women all wore shades of green because it was the opposite color of their red pandas. Breaking a jade ornament is very bad luck in China...so it's significant that Mei's grandmother and aunts were willing to break their jade ornaments to release their pandas. Priya already had deodorant and pads (as well as a figure), so she already had her period. That's a subtle notice that 13-year-old girls already have classmates having their periods, so it's a bad idea for parents to wait that long before having that discussion.

Sandra Oh killed me in that scene. One reaction channel I watched put it best: this movie, like most Pixar movies, lets you think you’re done crying and wipe your tears. Then they throw another emotional gut punch at you and get you started all over again. Not fair, but I’m addicted 😂

A lot of the self harm and self blame moments hurt me so much and I think many ppl glossed over how worrying her behaviour was. I cried every time she cried, I could completely understand her frustrations even when it was supposed to be a funny moment her freak outs were very real to her and that was relatable. It does help that I’m a child of a Chinese immigrant too but I was not high achieving and I did not have a warm relationship with my mother growing up. my strict household made my personality very muted which is where the whole holding back ur emotions come from for me (except crying, I cry incredibly easily, nothing helped in managing my tears and my parents hated that). I’m 19 now and only recently have I learnt to have my own voice and am still finding my personality. Mei’s personality really reminded me of my older sister tho hahaha

It's really sad that this never got the Oscar for best animated feature. That aside, this is one of the best animated movies I have ever seen. So ridiculously good, it's untrue. I am always reminded just how good when I see KZfaq reactors getting emotional watching it. As I understand it, this hit many Asian viewers like a train. So many quotable lines, so many memorable scenes, some very poignant and heartbreaking moments. The final quarter in the bamboo forest with her Mom as a girl and later transitioning from a girl into an adult was sheer genius. A beautiful movie and I really hope Turning Red 2 will be in the works soon. 🙂

9:44 It only happened a few times but I'm glad that I'm not the only one who was bothered by that. In a weird good way though since dealing with emotion can lead to bad coping habits. It gives vibes to a really unhealthy self harm habit that could develop if someone was struggling with their emotions which of I've heard people doing. Not saying this would make anyone do it but it feels like a small reference in where you hear people start. Love this movie though. 17:16 We see earlier a few stray cats hang around the shrine so its not far fetched they probably have kittens there. Since their ancestor loved animals they probably do to so I can see them leaving out food for the cat strays and the kittens.
@allisontodd5778
@allisontodd5778 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think that, with how this movie portrays it, it won't be something that encourages people to start with that habit. But it is most definitely a self-harm habit that some people struggle with, myself included.

Yeah - when the Aunties arrived - the cats that were resting by the gate, before they entered, sensed them, grabbed their kittens & ran. So there were probably kitten litters readily available for box of kittens test.

@@allisontodd5778 I think they were pointing out how much internal conflict Mei has at such a young age. I don’t like to see it in movies, not because I’m worried kids will emulate the behavior, but because I’ve done that before and it makes me sad to see a character go through it too.

This movie presents a metaphor for coming of age, and puberty, and you are right in your assessment of that. This movie brings something that's natural and happens to everybody when they become a tween. It would also make for good discussion opener between parents and their kids about these topics after watching this movie, they have to know and understand a little more what will happen as their bodies change in to adulthood before those changes begin to happen, so they are better prepared and can come to their parents with questions about things and not feel awkward or embarrassed about it, but not forcing it on to them, you have to show your support and letting them come to you when they need it if they're not sure about something. I do believe parents shouldn't handle things like Ming did in this movie, like don't embarrass your child in front of everyone in public about it like with Mei being embarrassed in front of her school about her pads, but being discreet about how you handle it, there's a proper way of handling that by going to the front office desk and handing the box of pads to someone there who will give them discreetly in private, and it's also important that parents don't be too overbearing and give them some space when they need it.

After watching this movie, I felt like Mei's mom didn't apologize enough to her daughter. I get the generational trauma thing, but what she did in the timeframe of this movie has not been compensated nearly enough by amends. She publically humiliated her several times (her drawings, the freaking pads after saying a couple of scenes prior that "nobody will notice a thingt", she felt like the victim when Mei made the decision FOR HER LIFE that she wanted to keep the panda...) Most of these weren't even addressed. The worst is that she KNOWS what an unbearable mother is! That is so frustrating. Notwithstanding, it's a great movie and a great reaction!

I think this movie was definitely aimed at people who were Millennials in the early 2000s who have their own children just entering the teen years now. The writer/director has said that it is an emotional autobiography. My daughter was a young teen in the early 2000s, so I get this movie and adore it. I've watched it six or seven times. And I'm 70 years old.

The scene where Mei's Mom takes Mei's fan art to the Daisy Mart reminded me very much of the English comedy of embarrassment such as David Brent from The Office and Alan Partridge from I'm Alan Partridge, which both contain scenes of 'looking through your fingers' scenes of excruciating embarrassment. The bit at the School where Ming produces the sanitary towel from her handbag reminded me a lot of those two series.

I've been watching the reactions of women and girls on KZfaq about Turning Red. I would have thought the mother bringing the pads to school and pulling them out in front of everyone would be the most cringe moment. But I've noticed that it's the scene where the mother storms into the Daisy Mart to confront Deven with the drawings to be what made the females watching it have a look of almost horrified panic on their faces, even though it was only an animation. That appears to be the penultimate nightmare for a girl in her early teens.

I watched this movie with my little one who liked it, had a lot of questions, but didn’t love it (aka asks to watch it repeatedly until I can’t take it anymore or a new movie captures her interest). I liked it, but as a forty something year old dude didn’t relate to it much. It really reminded me of “Brave”, which I liked better, but understand “Turning Red” might share a similar theme, yet be much more relatable to a specific targeted audience (greater depth of meaning to the experience of modern adolescent girls discovering who they are) while “Brave” had a skosh less depth, but broader audience appeal in its message. I don’t know, it’s getting late and I’m an idiot, so the only thing I can say is it always does my heart good the hear legend actor James Hong’s voice (David Lo Pan, rules forever!!!). Another smashing reactioneering success on your part; always hitting in the feels in your posts. Your streak of awesomeness continues on!!!

This movie has so many little inclusion bits added... You have a couple of women with hijabs, the security guard with the turban, there is someone in the concert in a wheelchair, the "OMG" girl in the bathroom wears an insulin patch on her arm, Tyler that's been rumoured as being LGBT and acting the way he does to kind of hide it... Just little bits everywhere showing diversity of all kinds. Just such a cute movie, and relatable for so many people, not just teenage girls or asian people. Also, I like how they did the eyes. So often in western animation, asians are drawn with such stereotypical eyes that it feels like it's being mocked at. This movie you can see asian traits, but not exaggerated to be a mockery. One of my friends who is chinese noticed this too and she loved all the attention to this and other details to get things right.

Yes! I noticed that as well! Especially all the different Asian aunts. They definitely made them distinctive without making it look hokey or cheesy. But I also loved when the girls have their little love fits their eyes looks like anime. It was a great way to include it without it being too much or over the top and changing the animation style too much. I noticed the insulin patch and the security guard with the turban. I missed the wheelchair. How great it must be to be a kid watching a movie and see something in there that mirrors your own life.

That was the year that the American team performed the impossible feat of defeating the USSR team. So...maybe the teacher's accent isn't Russian but Ukranian or another former satellite of what had been the USSR in 1980?
