Turning Red really got so much hate for no reason, it's IMPORTENT for young girls to get exposed to periods and puberty! If my parents hadn't explained it, I would've thought I was dying 😭! I really liked the art style and animation, and the diversity of characters is great. It's really funny and I was happy that we didn't have another girl lead who has to save the world (obviously that's cool but way overused) I'm glad that she can just be a teen and live a normal life 😭

I love that you mentioned Miriam having green as her main color, I'm a wannabe character designer and psychologist (who specializes in color and emotion) HOW DID I NOT NOTICE?! That's a cool detail, the designers are genius! It blew mind how thought out everything was! Like about 4town, the fact that FOUR is in the name just pushes the fact that Ming hates them. (Four is seen as an unlucky number in Mei's culture)

Fun fact: Mei & Miriam were also supposed to be lesbians and like each other. And if that theory about Miriam originally being a trans girl is true, then that’s two whole attempts of the director trying and wanting LGBTQ representation in the movie. Both of which were denied by Disney for “reasons”.

I don’t see the problem with a blasian bully, it shows that no matter your race or sexuality you are still a person and people can be shitty. If we put them on pedestals it makes it look like we are all amazing people who can’t be cruel to others.

True, the character on my profile(the bully from "Luca") is such an effeminate, ego, thin, clean, coward and "in love" with himself boy. He is the last option for a bully profile (hollywood american standards i mean ofc), because there, bullies are tough, strong and masculine presenting, things he isn't at all. I wonder how disney thumbs-uppe'd the design, and behavior, because disney we all know is conservative and it's hard to see them having so much screen time. But yeah, again he has a bully/villain profile, such as Ursula or scar, drag queen and effeminate men allusions respectively. He seems to even have somewhat gay vibes behavior(only my opinion tho), and i love it because means that even people like this can be a-holes and not them all being peaceful angels. And tbh, i had two lgbtq+ classmates who would annoy me. One being the main bully, a bisexual girl, and the other, a closeted gay guy (i knew he was gay last highschool yr bc got exposed, poor baby). The boy wasn't a bully as it, but he'd sometimes join the shit-talking. And getting scolded by me afterwards. Once i thought in slapping him across the face bc insulted me for free. Lucky he, my friend was between us in that moment, so i had to control myself. He was weaker than me, even me being a girl, i was taller and bigger than him. I could have reduced him easily. He got lucky ngl XDDD He also insulted a chubby girl yrs ago about her physical appearence, and he received a kick in the nuts. I loved it. Lol. That lady was a boss bish, she was so cool. Now i probably understand that he was mean bc was closeted and hating how the boy classmates were rude about gays in general when talking, pissing him off in secret because he was one too. Also his cousing(girl) was a shitty lady, hated by the whole grade, because she was so rude and selfish lmao

I also had students under my charge such effeminate kiddos like him ending gays or bi men. Crying to me because i was being "judgemental" 🙃 XD it was hilarious to see them "defending" the character when 2 lines above they wished him barbaric stuff bc he was the antagonist and hated him djkakd the hypocrisy Plus it's ovious its done jokingly, i would never do that towards a real person and assume more than i should about them ngl lol Seems that pixels now have sentiments?... XD also are the same ones who can literally wish the no life to certain character they hate but go moralist bc "i said sth". I saw it too with Tyler, the blasian kid, he'd be also shit talked because his boybands tastes in homophobic ways by some part of the public but the same ones would get mad and call you homophobic, if u dared to say sth like "he could be lgbt+ who knows". the only thing that made me uncomfortable in the movie had nothing to do with the movie really, and it's kind of silly. throughout the movie they call her mei mei a lot(and I think even mei mei bug once) and that just so happens to be what my mom calls me so I was being yelled at most of the movie which triggered my fight or flight xD. besides that, I really loved the movie and especially liked the scene between mei and the younger version of her mom.

Thank you for sharing your opinion on Turning Red! Hopefully Disney does get better at representation since kids do need to be exposed to things that aren't just what is considered as normal. As a disabled person myself, I would love for a movie to accurately portray what life is like (And how corners and stairs and the bane of my existence lol) and how we're still people who can do things, we just have different ways of doing them. If you are in the market for animated movies that does this pretty well, the How To Train Your Dragon franchise is pretty great about it, showing prosthetics being normalized just feels amazing (except for the main character sleeping with their prosthetic on, that made me cringe even though I don't use one myself). And Turning Red wise, I loved it, it showed pretty good representation for Asian people (I think, I'm not Asian myself so I can't speak on their behalf) which is a pretty big thing for Disney (and then Priya being bi, but I don't really want to celebrate that since it's a small thing and Disney should do better instead of giving the bare minimum).

Being a young prepubescent girl growing up in the early 2000s in North America with an overprotective mother granted I am not Asian but a lot of this still ring true to me and oh my goodness my only criticism is that it sometimes made me cringe reminding me of my own childhood back then. Nice to see a movie about a girl.....who acts......you know.....like a GIRL.

The panda is such a great concept because it can be a stand in allegory for almost anything. Personally, I ended up connecting with it as neurodivergence running in a family. Some of the afab family members before me seem to have struggled with symptoms of autism, but I'm the first to face it head on and be diagnosed.

I'm a little confused about the black representation thing, considering how much diversity was in the film. Does Canada have a lot more black people than Asian? Especially with the friend group, having three of the four be non white, and the white one not being the main character seems pretty good. If I'm wrong feel free to correct me, I don't know a ton about this subject.

I think it's less to do with what's realistic (this is an idealised, fictional story) and more the historic feeling of just wanting to be included in something without that inclusion having negative connotations. It's not always a bad thing to include something or someone just for the sake of it.

I really like this insight into what the red panda is. In addition I also relate it to the shame girls are made to feel for just being themselves and pushing back against that shame. Remember, the red panda went from being a source of the women's strength to becoming a source of embarrassment.

I haven’t really liked much of what Pixar has made recently, like Turning Red or Elemental. But I also don’t hate them, though I do miss having proper villains and don’t love the constant generational trauma stories. I just don’t think I am the target audience, which makes it difficult for me to connect with the more recent stories. Diversity is great, but I think it has led to them losing some audiences .

I want to say Tyler is just working those Prince Androgynous vibes. Cause he's been popular since the 80s, Where prince is able to cook Charlie Murphy pancakes and beat him in basketball in a suede suit and Loafers(?). idk I'm hugely unaware of the artist formerly known as Prince's catalog but he's not the first artist to dress effeminately and he won't be the last.

A lot of the discussion surrounding this movie loves to focus on the puberty aspect. I love that it's community brings up the issues and experiences that comes with periods and hormones. It's really important. However, I'm here to say that periods needs to be de-feminized. As someone who loves listening to people talk about media I'm invested in, it's distressing that I am constantly being unintentionally misgendered because of something I never wanted to happen. I can avoid this or hand wave it usually, but it's jarring to see it in places I seek comfort in.

I, don't like this movie. Not because "wah, it talked about periods, periods are gwoss 😭". I thought my period was, because of something else. Because I had no idea what it was I don't like it, because (to me) it comes across as saying "periods are super kewl! Everybody in your school will like you, and you shouldn't stop them!" And, as some one who had horrible periods in school, and identifies as agender... I, strongly disagree with that idea
