What a beautiful coloured wood and yippee for new gadgets! Laney that is one stunning pen. My uncle started out doing a bit of wood turning in his neighbours garage just as a bit of fun and the first thing he ever made was a lamp for my Mum. That was 15 years ago. He now makes bespoke handmade kitchens for a living! Its amazing what a wee hobby can turn into. This pen is amazing, I look forward to seeing more of your turning projects. Lee x

I work with a few Tree removing companies here in town, they bring the logs they remove to my property and drop them off, I then take them to the sawmill to be turned into lumber. :) Its a great way to get wood.

I wish my students could make that pen. Anything gun related is looked at like it is going to inspire violence at schools. I show how to make a top and a yo-yo using the pen mandrel. Keep turning, it is addictive.

That was a great looking pen, Laney! Pen turning was one of my favorite things to do when I was in wood shop in school. I really want to get a lathe so that I can do them again. I'd very much like a video on the pen press. Looking forward to the next turning project!

Great looking pen for your first. some turning advice you didn't ask for but I'll give it anyways. Blue shop towels are great for rubbing on finish and CA doesn't react with the fibers so it is great if you go the next level and use ca finish. downside is the dye in shop towels will stain your lighter color woods. If you like the Carbide I would recommend a Hunter tool, they have a bevel so learning to use it will help with your skew work. Welcome to the vortex of Wood-turning.

Pen prices range from $35 to over $100 when you buy the pen kits, they give you some insight as to what you could sell the finished pen for depending on the type of wood or material you use to make the pen.

Congrats! You will find that where you live, if you make friends with Tree Trimmers, they can provide you with all sorts of woods. No need to buy wood to make pens. Just cut up lims and crotch wood let air dry for a while than build a mini kiln with nothing more than a light bulb. You will have an endless supply of Dry wood locally grown.

Great Video ! and a 1st job well done. I've been turning since 2007, creating better than 400+ writing instruments and my 1st one didn't look near that good. I gave it to my son. I started out selling the pens for 25.00 each and the highest price pen I sold for $475.00 back in 2010 the wood was Chestnut Oak from an 80 year old Tobacco stick from Bath County, KY. I wish you the best of luck with your endeavors.

it does not matter if the hole is not concentric, because when you slide it on to the mandrel you are then making it concentric by turning the outside. hope that makes sense, but think about it.
