Frank Ocean - channel ORANGE / channel-orange
open.spotify.com/album/392p3s...
Channel Orange (stylized as channel ORANGE) is the debut studio album by American R&B singer-songwriter Frank Ocean. It was released on July 10, 2012, by Def Jam Recordings. After releasing his mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra the previous year, Ocean began writing new songs with Malay, a producer and songwriter who then assisted him with recording Channel Orange at EastWest Studios in Hollywood. Rather than rely on samples as he had with his mixtape, Ocean wanted to approach sound and song structure differently on the album. Other producers who worked on the album included Om'Mas Keith and Pharrell Williams. Its recording also featured guest appearances from Odd Future rappers Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, the Creator, vocalist/songwriter André 3000, and guitarist John Mayer.
Noted by writers as musically unconventional, Channel Orange draws on electro-funk, pop-soul, jazz-funk, and psychedelic styles, as well as nonmusical sounds such as film dialogue and ambient noise that function as interludes. Vocally, Ocean uses a free-form flow as well as alternating falsetto and tenor registers throughout the album. His songwriting explores themes of unrequited love, decadence, class, and drugs through the use of surrealistic imagery, conversational devices, and descriptive narratives depicting dark characters. He titled the album as a reference to the neurological phenomenon grapheme-color synesthesia, through which he had perceived the color orange during the summer he first fell in love.
To prevent Channel Orange from leaking onto the Internet, Ocean and Def Jam released the album digitally one week earlier than its publicly announced date. It was promoted with five singles, including Ocean's highest charting single "Thinkin Bout You" (number 32 on the US Billboard Hot 100) and a supporting concert tour in July 2012. Channel Orange debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 and sold 131,000 copies in its first week, eventually selling 621,000 copies in the US by September 2014. Critically, it was the best-reviewed album of 2012 and the year's top-ranked album in numerous critics' lists, including the American Pazz & Jop and the British HMV Poll of Polls. At the 2013 Grammy Awards, Channel Orange was nominated for Album of the Year and won Best Urban Contemporary Album. Since then, it has featured in several professional lists ranking the best albums from the 2010s as well as all time.

Sorry if this is completely irrelevant, but some months back when you and your dad were going through Kanye I got hooked. Been following ever since, and Channel Orange is probably my most played album in 2011-2015, so this one means a lot. The thing is, you two have such a great relationship, it is foreign to me, because my father is a narcissist. Watching you two having fun and interacting made me accept what he is, and that he is incapable of ever having something like you two share, with anyone. I thank you for that, because it made me move on. Watching you guys jam out over Channel Orange is a beautiful way to mark the occasion. Rock on and cherish each-other! :)

Also, John Mayer played the amazing guitar solo at the end of the song, in case you didn’t know :) thanks for doing this, though, hope you get to Nostalgia, Ultra as well, that would be fun as Kevin will obviously know some of the samples. the reason i love frank is cus i know he’s just makin shit that he thinks is cool. he’s not writing verses that sound like every other rapper, cus we all know if frank wanted to he could rap. instead he’s singing and adding all of these cool effects and letting them speak for themselves and he’s doing it w some form of consistency, so it kinda ends up forming it’s own universe. he’s unique and no one has still to this day ever really done what he does on a large scale. all hail king ocean

If you guys want to dive a lot deeper into this album and Blonde, the Dissect podcast did a full season dissecting each track of both albums. It covers the music, production and especially the lyrical meaning of each track in a lot of depth. Frank usually has a deeper meaning and subject that he is getting at below the surface and that podcast does a great job of helping make sense. You'll somehow appreciate Frank way more than you did before listening to that

I love this album. It's so consistent especially the lyrics and production. Also, it has so many classics (Pink Matter, Thinkin Bout You, SRK, Pyramids, Bad Religion). Also underrated songs (Pilot Jones and Monks). Frank a fucking goat one of the greatest artists and albums of this generation. Pls make more music Frank I need it 😫.

@@BanakaiGames it depends from person to person's personal preferences. Personally, I think this is the best album from Frank because it has the best replay value for me but yeah, all of his albums are not far from one another because all of them are good.

Wow Class of 2012! I had just graduated from high school and shortly after, this album dropped mid summer. Damn, brings back such great memories with my classmates playing this album in heavy rotation before we all went our separate ways. Listening to Channel Orange, always brings me a huge feeling of adolescence and coming of age. My overall favorite track was “Sweet Life” and I always thought “Monks” was the deep cut imo, since a lot of my peers tend to overlook it…lol. Nonetheless another great review! Thanks for taking me back down memory lane.

I feel you Papa Tables: I finished my first track last year that I was satisfied with after almost a decade of making music. And guess what? An incredible day, I was buzzing - but then finishing tracks became the norm, and the next challenge arose: finishing a song that was better than the first one. Truly a never-ending process, so, in the end... just finish a track, get that fucking dopamine rush, and keep fucking moving!

If you guys want another album from 2012 that influenced a new generation of artists & hasn't aged a day then Lana's Born to Die is the one. The combo of triphop and baroque pop is 10/10.

I listen to this album so much, each of the tracks hold so many different memories for me. Like listening to ivy in the snow for the first time and feeling absolutely and utterly magical. Or listening to Lost as the plane took off and I left the country that I had been living in for the United States. Or Sweet Life and walking through the sun soaked halls of school and feeling happy.

When you talked about Sci-fi music, I thought man, y'all should listen to Janelle Monae's early work when she was an Archandroid called Cindy Mayweather. Her alter ego. Inspired by Metropolis, the 1930s movie that is widely acclaimed as the first sci-fi movie. All 3 albums were epic. Metropolis, The Archandroid and Electric Lady. Beautiful and mind boggling!

When I showed my friend Lost, he told me, word for word, "I don't like what he's talking about, but I can't deny that he's an amazing singer and the song is mixed very well." He had no choice but to respect tf out of it because of how good it is.

That "Muted" sound you talk about is actually the high end missing. It's what MOST rnb producers do in order to allow the percussion and vocals to stand out. it's a lesson that takes years to really master .
