Congratulations and best of luck with the podcast! You're a natural Kara, and lucky for the rest of us that you share your knowledge and common sense 🙂 Your last point about the electricians reminded me of something similar from years ago when I did graphic art (1980s, cut/paste stuff, before computers). I did work for a restaurant: main menu, then supplements for holidays in the same style. An owner came to pick up the latest one, and said "You know, I was thinking. I might do this myself" then had the #%@$ to ask me how to do it. I told her sure, but she'd need to buy 3 different Letraset sheets ($9 each) for the 3 different fonts they wanted--more if she ran out of a specific letter (s), $12 for the fancy Art Nouveau decorative elements she chose, $15 for the borders, then rubber cement, x-acto knife, T-square etc etc. (I charged them $25 for the main menu, then $10 for each supplemental one). She groaned, then paid me and left. LOL, I loved it.

I find pricing hard as an antique seller. If I calculated a decent amount per hour for hunting, cleaning/repairing, researching the item's history, staging and taking photos and writing product descriptions (for antique and vintage sellers basically every single item is unique!) I am afraid it would not be affordable for the customer in the end..
@KaraBuntin
@KaraBuntin Жыл бұрын
It's interesting you would bring that up. I just did a video for Thursday that talks about the pricing thing being something specifically difficult for vintage sellers. It does get tricky.
@tinaindina7032
@tinaindina7032 Жыл бұрын
It is difficult. I'm also selling vintage. A couple of times in a year I do a tracking of my use of time on cleaning, photographing, listing, packing, convos and so on. It varies a lot from a few hours a week to two full days (I do have a "normal" job too). I find it interesting as my perception of the time I use is much different from the facts. And the time I use on listing the items....it's the biggest time consumer. Exited to see what Kara has to say on the topic on Thursday.

Omg I am so excited you have a podcast now!!! I really enjoyed this and hope you do more. The audio sounded great and you have the perfect voice for podcasting. Have you considered using stitcher or cross posting your KZfaq videos to something like Spotify/Apple Music? Spotify let’s you post videos now too! That’s usually where I listen to most of my podcasts that also get posted on KZfaq as well. Sometimes its just easier to have it on a music platform though because I can listen while I walk and not drain my data more. So happy though I have another thing to listen too, a lot of the podcasts I listened to stopped or became too inconsistent and I’d love to hear more from you in this format. I really loved learning more about your business background and it’s so true that people assume what we do is this magical fun thing. People hear logo production artist and they light up and think I make Disney movies or something lol. Like I do like what I do, but it has its moments. People assume I can make everything and poof it comes out in a second or I get stupid requests and have to defend why it can’t or shouldn’t be done… the most common at my job is requests for trademarked images or logos… my boss has even okayed stuff like that and I just throw up my hands and say okay you know what if the company gets sued it’s not my damn problem anymore. I know with a home based business you still have to deal with idiots sometimes, but I’d like to deal with them a lot less and have a right to say no to something.

When family and friends ask me if they should have an Etsy shop to sell things they make, I usually discourage them. Most of the ones who ask about it aren't going to have patience for taking photos, editing photos, writing descriptions, figuring out SEO and all the "fun" that goes into having a shop, and I know it won't be a good experience for them

Yes! Don’t expect family and friends to purchase from you- at all or consistently. On chapter 2- there are some that went above and beyond on supporting my business and way more that just say they do and want free items or never purchase anything. For some I couldn’t even give it away 🤦🏻‍♀️ - just not my customer, but have eventually found them.

This format fits you so well!! Question, have you ever done pricing for digital? It seems like everyone charges pennies, and so many expect digitals to be cheap because they are "passive income" but in truth, it isn't. So much more work goes into digital products other than designing, just like with physical products. It's a business. Just because digital designers don't keep physical inventory doesn't make the item any less valuable. I've been told I'm greedy and full of too much pride when it comes to my prices. What are your thoughts on pricing digital items?

I have to say, that charging my worth was a very difficult lesson for me to learn. My shop is now a year old, and I no longer price compare when determining my prices. I used to try to be the lowest price on Etsy. No longer! Not after the experience I have, as you explained, and the higher quality materials that I use compared to other sellers! I know what I'm worth, and guess what? Sales skyrocketed! Thanks for your channel!!!
