The fact that Jerry went all the way to the mafia to ask about housing in Tuscany, then got too scared to deny the offer he got, even though he wasn't really going to rent, and then convinced Kramer to come with him, is hilarious in and off itself 😹

Honestly, it sounded to me like he wanted Kramer to come along to split the bill of 2 million Lear. My theory is that he didn’t choose George because he was either too chicken shit, had plans, or he didn’t have enough money to split. The guy says 2 million lira is 1700 american dollars. So when Jerry paid the cab driver he paid 75000 lira which is equivalent to $63.77 according to that established exchange rate. So he did get ripped off, Kramer was right. Also in 1995 when this was aired, $63.77 would be the equivalent of $105.46 today. So it would need to be a pretty long ride, but not unheard of, since sometimes unworldly travelers might just take a super long cab ride from the airport instead of taking the time to figure out trains etc.

I think that’s the joke, because then they can have George sounding totally rational and level-headed when he asks Jerry why he even cares - when in reality, George is usually the super-petty one who would absolutely care about something like that.

I love how George's "Mr Maestro" at 1.29 is just a couple of words, but it tells you everything you need to know about George's character and that he's been taken in completely by the Maestro's act. The writing/performances on Seinfeld really are on a completely different level to most sitcoms.
