Don't let free motion quilting scare you. Watch as I overcome the scariness of quilting on your home machine. You can do it too if you're willing to take a chance. Come on - let's do some free motion quilting.

I am still working on my daughter's birthday quilt and I have reached the stage of the process where I need to quilt it. I am an amateur free motion quilter in the learning stages so I thought I would share my tips on free motion quilting. Because I am a newbie, the things I've learned are fresh in my mind and I hope it will help anyone who is thinking about free motion quilting but is afraid to try.
I am using a geometric design and have discovered I can't quilt a straight line anymore than I can cut material straight. :-) It is a learning experience. Just think of free motion quilting as painting with thread. I think it is even called thread painting.
Thank you for watching. If you want to see more videos like this one, subscribe and click the bell to be notified when I share a new video. If you like this video, give it a thumbs up and share it with your friends.
Have a great day and enjoy some chocolate.
Thanks,
April

It never occured to me to work with the machine oriented thus. Makes a lot of sense.. When you think about actual quilting machines! I venture to think it helps get your head into a different place too. Thank yiu.

Good morning and thank you for this video! Totally cool idea to move the machine that way to quilt! I don't have the space to try that but I will try to do the triangle design!

Hello April,, I love your tips and tutorials on quilts and how to see how much fun anyone can have. I am a new quilter and I have made several rag quilts just by watching you and I have also just finished a fat quarter quilt.. I thought it was for a single bed but it turned out to be a size for a baby crib..LOL but that is ok.. I was just wondering when you were doing the free motion sewing.. I have a brother quilting machine with the extended table is this a good idea for quilting?? also I was just wondering where would i find any information on how many fat quarters to use for a single, double, queen size quilt?? another question is I love the way you finish the quilts with borders.. btw .. I am from Ontario Canada and love watching your teaching techniques.. I am going to be showing and helping a friend to start to quilt in April and I will definitely show her the rag quilts the easy way,,, Thanks for all you do... and I sure do eat some chocolate and love your show... keep up the great inspirational ideas.. and thanks for all you do!!! Sincerely Sharon from Canada( outside of parry sound ont)

Hi Sharon I think your brother quilting machine sounds like it can do the job just fine--as far as the fat quarters and sizes you can look it up online Or there is a book that is everything about quilting I’ll have to look it up I know my local quilt store sells it The busy lady quilt shop in mt Washington ky

Hi! How do you free motion a 2 piece quilt that does not have batting. Do I use regular stitching or put on my open quilt foot
@aprilscraftroom
@aprilscraftroom 2 жыл бұрын
If you are truly free motion quilting it, I would use the open tow quilt foot. But you will probably have to have the tension set like you do piecing because it won't be as thick. April

I have never tried quilting with the machine positioned this way so I’ll give it a try. I have a Jazz II with a 12” throat so it should be ok. Do you turn the machine back every time you have to thread and adjust tension etc?
@aprilscraftroom
@aprilscraftroom 3 жыл бұрын
Let me know how it works with the Jazz II. I do not turn it. I have learned to do it sideways. LOL. thank you for watching.

I tried it your way and I’m so glad I did. I have a Jazz II, with a 18”x24” Sew Steady extension. Turning the machine gave me unlimited space on both sides, and an extra 6-7” of the extension to go with the 12” throat space. This helps so much to move the quilt sandwich around. Thank you!

Do you have this basted down at all or maybe the spray adhesive? Thx
@aprilscraftroom
@aprilscraftroom 2 жыл бұрын
Yes - I use basting spray. At the time I did this video I used June Tailor Quilt Basting Spray. I've since changed to Odif 505 spray because it seems to gum up my needle less. Thank you for watching and commenting. Here is an affiliate link: amzn.to/3EYkvoC April

Pat Sloan says it is helpful to practice on a Panel, like a large flower or the Eifel Tower panel, Angela Walters did samples also on the large flower panel.

Where do u buy the extension table for machine?
@aprilscraftroom
@aprilscraftroom 3 жыл бұрын
I purchased the extension table for my Juki when I bought the machine at my Local Quilting Store. Sew Steady is well known for their extension tables and they are available for most machines and in a variety of sizes. You can google Sew Steady and find different retailers. I hope this helps and thank you for watching. April
