If you are a dancer, I'm hoping this gives you some advice on what to work on. And if you are not a dancer, I hope this helps you appreciate this beautiful art form even more!

Hi I'm Kathryn!
I am a former soloist with the New York City Ballet and Miami City Ballet. When I was a young student, I was always looking for insights into the ballet world and how to improve my dancing as well as beauty and lifestyle tips. Now that I am a professional, it is my turn to share.
On my channel I make ballet, beauty, and lifestyle videos for everyone of all ages. My goal is help dancers improve and achieve their dreams as well as open up the ballet world to non dancers. I've seen people say that Nela is "boring" to watch because she's too perfect/controlled, but I think those people are ignorant of what makes ballet so magical. She is one of the most incredible dancers to ever exist in ballet, and I appreciate this video so much because it shows the tiny moments that she creates that all add up to astronomically "expensive" dancing.

I've seen the same thing, I have to agree that these people are ignorant. The nuances she places within her craft too, they're overlooked by some as they only want to see a perfect technique and nothing more. She is the most complete dancer and one of the greatest ever. Luckily, there are MANY who do appreciate her, especially those within the dance world who can clearly see her worth.

@@kathryn_morgan Great to make this into a series 😍🙏 Would you'd be willing to do a deconstruction of Aegina's variation (Spartacus) performed by Svetlana Zakharova from her time with the Bolshoi? Or any other ballerina you think performs this variation the best? I think the part for Aegis in Spartacus is quite a hard one to pull off because of it's explosiveness, combined with the character portrayal and technique required. What do you think? 😊

I have always thought that Nela is the most brilliant dancer, but you have helped me understand the nuances of how she achieves that greatness, plus ‘VaDream’ is just that! It would be wonderful to see Nela’s Kitri, plus Osipova’s Giselle, and Zenaida’s Tart Adage. Thank you so much.

Just loving the attention you have given to Marianela! Thank you! Amidst so many of her talented Russian contemporaries, she has always stood out for these reasons you've listed. The details of every transition step are given equal importance as much as every stunning balance or pirouette. As one star-struck fan commented on an aging Fonteyn years ago- "oh queen, please live forever", I feel similarly about Núñez. Not that she doesn't have a lot of dancing left to give! Just grateful we have so much of her in video.

Amazing... Nela and Vadim as always, stunning 😁 What I love about Vadim also is that even when he's partnering Nela, he is still acting, he's still in the story... So many times I've seen guys just turn in to a block of wood when behind the ballerina... And his interpretation also astounds me... He's actually playing the innocent 16 year old he's supposed to be... So many guys play him as a confident mature Prince... But that's the whole point, that is still young and naive...

Truly. Young and naive and he KNOWS he is not ready to take on kingship. Vadim has the modesty himself -- despite all the excellences of technique and physique an style he commands, the modesty is his own, and it shines in his characterization. He is generous and eager, but he does not push himself on us....

LOVE this idea for a series!!! I saw "Kathryn" and "Marianela" and clicked immediately. I also love how positive this was. The internet is so full of people taking down other people and I love that you were specifically discussing how excellent all her choices were (which of course isn't hard with Nela but I feel like some people always find something to criticize). Pls continue this series!! Also re: Vadim's jumps, I saw these two do Don Quixote live and he did a jump in second in his variation and the whole audience gasped, it was incredible

Marianela is just divine to watch, it's an extreme privilege and honour to be able to witness her magic from the ROH and I say it all the time, but we're lucky that she chose to have her career over here with us. I'll say when I saw her perform this again last March, she reached a level that was beyond even her best, something magical happened.

@@kathryn_morgan She really is, she sets a high bar and then sails over it. Her technique and lines and turnout are so perfect and solid that it just gives her this leeway to add in so much detail. @@SarahHope883 It's unbelievable, but she does keep getting better. She picks up more nuance and pauses in the music. Was you there last March too? Wasn't it on another level? I was speechless and then everyone on the ballet forum was too. No words for that white swan and then the she blew it away with the black!

@@Emmareads15 I never got to see her last year but I saw her do Odette/Odile in Liam Scarlet’s swan lake in 2018 and have been following her career at RB since she debuted as the lilac fairy in sleeping beauty. No idea what year that was but she was absolutely divine. I was still in primary school I think.

This is such a great idea for a series! I'm a non-dancer that really enjoys the art of ballet. Marianela is one of my favorites, such an incredible technician but also such a beautiful artist. I like her a lot because I feel she stays in the charaacter the best when executing the really difficult movements. Sometimes you can see the thinking and effort on even pro dancers' faces when the moves get tough, but Marianela disguises the effort so well and keeps character so beautifully. Can't wait for more!

"I like that ... her armpit's not in her ear" is not a sentence I ever expected to hear! 28:50 Nela and Vadim are so wonderful! Thank you for also critiquing Vadim. I absolutely love how helpful your deconstructing explanation is, and I would love to see more! As a non-dancer, sometimes I wish there would be a side-by-side comparison of a legendary principal dancer with another dancer who is not performing the elements all that well. However, I don't want to embarrass anybody! Is there such a thing as before and after videos? Eg "Here is a variation I did when I was 12. Now I'm 18 and look how much better I have become." I would also love a more detailed explanation, if possible, regarding artistry. Is it mostly facial expressions? Did you as a student get acting lessons like they do at Vaganova or Paris? This was actually really helpful to see examples of using your head to tell the story and have a moment, but still staying strong and straight in your torso and chest. Teachers always talk about this but seeing real world examples is so valuable

I have to be honest. I know Nunez is loved by many but was never one of my favourite ballet dancers (Beautiful dancer, just my opinion) But, after this video, I have such a new found appreciation for her. So detailed. So beautiful. Bravo ❤

This is stunning. I too, have always been a huge fan of Marianela, not just for her enormous talent and personality but for her innate acting ability. This breaking-down of the 'line' is something that we non-dancers never notice. Kathryn has obviously made an in-depth study of this and the beauty is that, although doubtless aimed at dancers (and how my goodness how they will be helped by it) it definitely increases the pleasure of us, the audience. I will watch out for all the points mentioned - the straight up line - explained so beautifully we can all see it - and all the other technical aspects described - with a new interest. Thank you so much.

I take a class in Denver called Technique Thru Turns and this is basically that class; finding the axis and controlling the plie in everything from tendus to tours. If you can find that axis and plie, all the other steps, including pointe work, becomes a lot easier. Thanks for the fabulous breakdown!

Omg, this was so exciting to watch! A fun one for a future video might be Natalia Osipova’s act one Giselle. I would also be very interested to hear your commentary on some of the greats from the Balanchine world, but I realize copyright and stuff might make that hard or impossible.

Nela is just legendary (and Vadim as well). I saw her live for the first in January: she performed grand pas classique and it was one of the most amazing things I've seen in my entire life, my heartbeat still speeds up every time I think about it. If you wanted to deconstruct Nela's Rose Adagio we wouldn't complain by any means, just throwing the idea out there

I think it would be lovely to find pieces where, not just the specific dancer is analyzed, but maybe aspects like breath placement, partner acknowledgment, and port de bras are the focus? I think many non-dancers forget that those aspects need to be considered as well. In this clip, I really love Nunez's looks to Rothbart occasionally (My partner and I were listening to your podcast the other day and were laughing about the "dramatic pause" after the fouettés. It just kills the tension and drama of the story for us, haha.)

I loved this! I've been hoping for a "reacting to dancers" series such as this for a very long time. Nela is incredible, but what made me hope for something like this for ballet videos in general is that you have an extremely kind yet precise way of describing what you see regardless of dancer level which makes videos like this a joy to see and listen to even for non-dancers such as myself. As a psychologist I believe that what works in education long term comes from a place of appreciation, empathy, and genuine interest, which I think you as a teacher and dancer embody. It makes me super happy for your students, knowing that they're in a psychologically safe environment.

Nela is one of my favorite dancers! She might be one of the only non-Russian ballerinas that can capture my attention and captivate me in the same way as the Russian dancers. There is something so magical about her. She is my favorite Kitri and she is my favorite Gamzatti (second favorite Aurora, only to Ekaterina Krysanova, but favorite Lilac Fairy). I love when she partners with Vadim Muntagirov! I saw a video of him partnering with Oksana Skorik when they were still learning at Perm Ballet School in Russia in '08. I was like "woah!" I love her smile and everything about her dancing. She just has that it factor. You just want to watch her. It's more than her flawless technique but she just IS that character. You are the bystander in the palace room. You are there--she brings you there. I was watching a video of her dancing the Swan Lake Pas de Deux (in rehearsal, it's the one that goes with the Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux) and it was divine! Yes, I saw the Grand Pas Classique video too! Same thing, even in rehearsal, she performs! I see many suggestions for Natalia Osipova next (which I would loooove to see you react to her Giselle, La Bayadere, Laurencia--there are so many clips of her that are amazing) but if you plan on analyzing Russian ballerinas, would you add Olesya Novikova (suggesting Raymonda or Giselle) and Evgenia Obraztsova (suggesting Coppelia or Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux) to the queue?!

Im a non-dancer, but classically trained musician. I’ve been a fan of your performance commentary series, because a dancer’s thought process mid performance is so subtly similar and different from an instrumentalist’s interpretation. These kinds of deep dives are so cool, thanks for making the world of dance so accessible for people who might otherwise not have this level of insight into it.

One of my favorite thing about Marianela (there's so many!!) is that because she is so in control of her body, she is able to syncopate her timing in a way that has the eye just clinging to her every movement. She suspends little balances for just a half a second longer and it's absolutely captivating. One example is in that passe that you say "...yesss" to right at 18:26, she holds on and shows off the foot and the balance for just a half a second extra and it's so wonderful. She pushes timing even more in the Grand Pas Classique variation than in this one, and it lets her show off her lines and also builds out the character and gives her dancing such polish, such "expensiveness" like you said

Love this, and love that it will be a new series! I'd actually really like to see commentary on some corps and soloist clips - talking about how some of the more complex scenes come together on stage (and getting to see commentary on different soloists within one video, too). Royal Ballet currently has some short clips from Swan Lake and Diamonds, and it would be great to hear some Giselle Act 2 deconstruction! Royal Ballet and Paris Opera both have clips up. And I know it's harder to get good clips of Balanchine dancers that aren't like 30 seconds long, but if possible I'd love an analysis of Sara Mearns. At least right now, there's a full Walpurgisnacht variation up.

Ugh this was so lovely to watch. And great to hear your commentary on Vadim as well. Would love you to do Sleeping Beauty Rose Adage too. Also would love to see a side by side comparison of two dancers doing the same solo so we can appreciate how different dancers incorporate their unique strengths into their dancing and portray the character differently.

Excelent video, Katie!! Nella is my favorite dancer ever too! She's the perfect combination of pure technique and artistry! Maybe you can analyze some of the ROH rehearsals , I think it will be interesting see the corrections and the way that each dancer aplies it!

from UK: Nela is extraordinary. She has a unique lightness, as though airborne, not grounded. She has the most wonderful feet. She and Vadim are a match made in heaven, they both have lovely natures; friendly, kind, always smiling and so much humour! I do not understand why the Royal Ballet have not made her a Prima Ballerina. Thank you for this insightful video.

Marianela is the most exquisit ballerina. She is also my favourite. Not only she is queen of clean, perfect match with Vadim, what a pair, but her interpretetions on any role are apparently subtle although so felted at the same time. I hope you could do Tamara Rojo some time.

Perfection - Black Swan! You're dead by the end of that variation and Marianela doesn't even flinch. Wow! I love how in the coda she throws a few looks at Rothbart as confirming her triumph over Siegfried. Absolutely the Queen of details, technically and artistically. Thanks Kathryn!

How fun! I remember talking with you about Nela at the LPBC Spring Gala. 😃She's someone I try to channel in my own (amateur) dancing and performing. Her control and technique always leaves me in awe.

I would love to heart you talk about techniques from other parts od the world Kathy; for example the Latin way of dance ballet as well as the russian. The Vaganova exams analysis would be a bless.
