Two 500 Gallon Tanks in One Living Room!

I was in Orlando last week and was fortunate to spend a few minutes at Mario's house. He builds big, beautiful acrylic tanks and stands and there are two huge ones in his living room! He also has a pretty cool project going on out in his garage so be sure to watch until the end.

I prefer the discus tank it's so peaceful and the tiny tetras make a great addition! The other tank is a little too chaotic

The discus tank is beautiful. Discus always gave a calming effect to a room. The African tank, on the other hand, is pure chaos! Africans are extremely busy. They dig burrows and move things around, etc. But there are so many fish...what were you thinking?

My goodness.. If I had a tank one of those size, I would die of happiness lol and so would my fish! The biggest tank I own is a 55 gallon lol.

I am retired, on a limited income, live on a second floor apartment, and would just love a 55 gallon tank. Mine is only 20 gallons and I am restocking it after a disastrous loss a while back, and choosing carefully what I put in. I have loved aquariums since in my teens.

The second tank actually isn't overcrowded. If you look close you'll see that the fish are mostly all near the front of the tank and bunched up on one end. There's a lot of space behind them. And remember, five hundred gallons is huge. Even if there are fifty fish they still have ten gallons each.

For a 500g tank plus whatever the sump hold. It could house between 150-200 cichlids easy and be considered African cichlid standard stocking. Beside tank side filtration system play a major role too I would prefer smaller tank with better filter system. He under stock that tank because he already has enough space number of cichlid that the aggression is low, plus he want it to be as maintenance friendly as possible.

Discus tank is really nice,peaceful and those tetras are really hard to keep. Ciclid tank is too crowded.

Beautiful Wow I like the Discos fish tank. What a dream tank to have really this is the way to go. I'm down from 9 tanks 6 to have a cleaner live plants like that would be wonderful.

I have Mbuna cichlids. You have to have lots. It thins out aggression but they are brutal territorial fish. I litterally had a dozen yellow labs and they kept killing each other. Down to 2 males and they quarrel. Blue Cobalts are not as bad.

Hey folks most of the fish in those tanks are cichlids. Discus are cichlids also from they are from South America.

At first when i saw the discus tank i was like "wow, this dude knows what he doing" and then I saw the malawi tank. Malawi with clown loach? How can that that be ok? Ive learned that is wrong, if we care about the fish. So can we mix all sorts of fish or not?

There’s actually more folks doing exactly this than you’d think. It would be an issue with wild caught loaches more so than these highly adaptable captive bred fish we have available to the hobby nowadays.

Those fish are absolutely stunning! Especially the blue ones. I've always liked the discus fish but never owned them. Mario your the man! That's quite a collection of African cichlids you have there! I didn't see any chipokee or uratus cichlids. Hope they didn't go extinct! I had a 55 gallon & 30 gallon tanks. One cichlid & fresh water. Wish I could move somewhere else to own a tank or two like yours! The water here is terrible for aquarium hobbies! Mining causes too much lime build up on Everything! Absolutely stunning tanks & fish Mario!

The first Tank was beautiful because it doesn't have much fishes. Discus was looking so beautiful and just can't forget those small blue fishes ( I really don't know their name but was beautiful). Amazing andd so impresive.......

Awesome tanks. Thanks Steve. Noticed a big bottle of Prime. You need to get him onto Safe. Mario should get a year out of a kilo (which conditions 1 million litres!)

Tony Canniffe I'll have to second that. SAFE is the best. Its just prime concentrate, ends up being WAY more economical, even in the short term. I use it on my 120 and 250grams of the stuff has lasted me almost 5 years of fishkeeping. Only downside is it stinks and you can't pre mix a batch of safe if you want to store it for any amount of time, the half life is about a day once it gets wet. Keep it dry and it'll last you for years. -Not sponsored I just love the product-

7catstied2gether I have nearly finished my 4litre bottle of Prime. It was around $120 Aussie dollars. 1kg Safe was $55 and does about 4x the volume. I have about 20 tanks, so I go through it.

Just wanted to pass a tip along for all my fellow fishophiles. If you have really large driftwood to boil and clean, get a commercial sized stock pot. Those suckers go up to 200 qts and you could cook a kid in there!

Mario, I think your tank is beautiful, I hope someday to have a tank that big! my only question is about the flowrate in the tank. I was led to believe that for discus there should be less movement in the water. That discus don't like fast-moving water, and normally don't come from rivers that are fast flowing. Have you done any research in this area? Thank you again for showing your fantastic aquarium! Also Mario, I wanted to ask you if you were aware of or have tried the Hanns frozen discuss food, my discus love it and I think it's much better than beef hart. Anyway you are one lucky fish keeper! I cannot wait to see the 800 gallon set up and running, that's an amazing thank!

Where about in Florida we’re in pompano beach south Florida……tanks are beautiful now I just upgraded my 15 Gallon for a 75 Gallon and I felt huge…………looking at these tanks feel like I’m back in a 15G
