Paul Lynde was an American icon...I remember watching 'Hollywood Squares' as a kid flopped down in front of the 300 lb. 19" Zenith TV in my pj's and mom drinking a glass of wine on the couch...and we both could not wait for that center square to be called...everything out of that guy's mouth was gold...and can you imagine what he would say to that last statement??!! Oh my gosh, he was so funny. I also remember seeing him in reruns as Uncle Arthur on Bewitched. I couldn't imagine anyone else playing him. He was perfect for the part:)
@chunkymunkey91823 жыл бұрын
I kinda wonder if the part of Uncle Arthur was actually supposed to be a funny character or if they just actually wanted Paul Lynde to actually be on the show...either way, the made an excellent choice to put him on bewitched. If the character was actually supposed to be funny like that, they made the perfect choice :D
@sunshinebannister10502 жыл бұрын
Did you know that was where Paul got his start? In the first season Samantha had him as her driving instructor. He later came back as Uncle Arthur. He was hysterical as he always is and I think the part was written in for him to stay on as her uncle. If you haven't seen it, you should. It is in black and white. RIP Paul, we love you❣️😁🥰💖🌹☮️🇺🇲🤗🦋
@robsemail Жыл бұрын
@@sunshinebannister1050 his start on TV, yes I believe you’re right. But it was very much not his start in show business. He’d already had major success on Broadway in the original production of ‘Bye Bye Birdie’. Dick Van Dyke was in the cast of the same production, and he also soon became well known to TV audiences.

I was a dental assistant once in a office where a lot of gays came in for treatment. and like some people they would always say how could I work in people's mouth, oh how it hurts to have you in my mouth etc. growing up with Paul, these lines would come in my head and a lot of them more funny ones regarding how they have sex. my boss would watch my face and when we were out of room, the staff would listen to my lines. I had to thank Paul and my brothers for learning how to laugh about lives among humans.

The way I understood it was that Lynde was often supplied with a list of "gag" answers, but he wasn't told which questions they went with. So when you saw those "wheels turning," he was sifting through the answers, trying to find the right one for the question he'd been asked -- and he probably ended up as surprised (and amused) as the audience. Again, this is what I've read, but I can't swear that it's true. But the "Squares" contestants were definitely primed, at least in many cases.

Paul Lynde was a great entertainer who knew just how to "push the envelope" just a little without offending. He was gay and everyone pretty much knew it -especially if you were a Hollywood insider. But he wasn't a "political" gay like a lot of entertainers are today. He wasn't in-yo'-face about gay issues and politics, so even the older generatiion folks admired him --- as I did. A great actor and comedian who added his own brand of humor and schtick to movies and television of that bygone era.

Hollywood Squares, The Newlywed Game and Match Game were based on louche humour, the double-entendre and “wink-wink”. They certainly drew in the viewers. Did people complain? I’m sure some did, but they were reminded that they could turn the channel or turn off the boob-tube completely. But shocked reactions of “Oh my God, did he just say that!”? I don’t recall any.
