22 year old A.I puts on a show against the visiting Lakers who have 19 year old Kobe Bryant coming off the bench.
An exciting action packed game which I taped off TV back in November 1997. This was Michael Jordan's last year in the league and I set the VCR that night thinking these 2 young guys (Iverson and Bryant) would be the ones to watch after MJ leaves and this would be a game to save. The tape lasted 12 years, and several house moves (across 3 countries!) before turning up in my 'Box of crap!' along with a stack of SLAM magazines and a Powerbook Duo (!!)
Anyway edited highlights for you right here. Enjoy! My favorite bit was Chick Hearn seemingly not having a clue who Will Smith was!!

probably the two most durable guards in the history of the game. took a beating every single night and still played their hearts out.

This is old school. Jon Barry with a full head of hair? Most people now only know him as the crappy NBA on ABC analyst. Not having AI around for the past couple of seasons makes you forget just how quick he was. Great upload

Agreed. Without his size, special treatment from the offense, and volume shooting Kobe would never have been a leading scorer. Iverson was practically forced to be a volume shooter and still shot 45% from the field and dished out 8 assists per game while he did.

Also take note of this. Kobe was chosen for the all-star game in this season, this was the same seaon that he only started 1 game, averaged 15.4 ppg, 3.1rpg, and just 2.5apg. Iverson started all of the 80 games that he played, averaged 22ppg, 6.2apg, 2.6 rpg, and even 2.2 stls. Ray Allen started all 82 games, averaged 19.5ppg, 4.3apg, and 4.9apg. For some reason Kobe played bench minutes and averaged bench numbers and was chosen as an all-star over two players doing more than him.

blacktee31 it’s a fan vote. Kobe got lots of votes from the fans, he was very popular. Especially when he played very well in a blowout loss to Chicago that year earlier in the season and it garnered lots of attention since he was one of the many marketed as the next Jordan. The Lakers moved him along somewhat slowly due to his lack of college experience and having a talented backcourt already

Thats the problem with players like iverson. Laziness,just because theyre good it doesnt mean they need to stop working on their game. Iverson was way better than kobe back then,youre definitely right,but when kobe realized that he wanted to be the best player he could be.. iverson was stuck on his level and kobe went on to be one of the greatest players to ever play the game maybe 2nd best. Theyre miles away from each other now

It just doesnt make any sense, both of them were playing all-star minutes and putting up all-star numbers but a bench warmer(at the time) was chosen to play in the all-star game. Why? Because he was on the LA lakers and got more exposure as a rookie than two players that were more deserving.

In other words the fans see more of one so they cant very well know how exciting or talented the other is. Irving and Cole is a bad analogy though since Irving gets a little bit more exposure. I think Walker would be a better example.

It is, you missed my point. Kobe was getting more exposure for playing for a team like the. LA is the team that is showcased the most and gets a lot of spots on tv, especially being 3rd in the confrence. There were much more deserving players who were just as exciting as Kobe that didnt make the cut, if a sophmore is in then the coaches should be looking at the other young talent playing at a higher level than the more popular one. It would be like Norris Cole getting votes before Irving

@dparkertex I think its better man honestly. Lakers vs Boston era goin on then everyone else. Miami's big three. Madison Square Garden is back and Rockin. Both Texas teams are winning. There is a stud on almost every team now. The point guards in the leauge are fucking dunking on centers. Kobe is going for number 6 that is a good storyline through the playoffs. I mean the leauge is back.

@Disposable5 . okay lets be honest, everybody says everybody is the best player in the league when they either have one great game, great week , great month , or great year. kobe's percentages were only higher cuz he got quality shots cuz he had SHAQ. iverson had role players. to be successful you need another star. look at any championship team and youll see there 2 stars. and to end this convo, everybody has their own opinion. i say iverson was better back then ,u say kobe, both great ballers

@m3sexyballer 12 жыл бұрын
@Disposable5 i really do actually. btw if kobe was better than iverson, thats why kobe never got his 1st mvp til 08, iverson got his in 01 (one of the years kobe was better than him), and iverson averaged over 2 steals in like every season or every season, how the hell did he not play defense?? over 2 on his whole damn career. kobe played shit defense back then. and kobes percentage went down cuz he had to take more shots cuz the lakers were weak! same thign ai did his whole career.

@MrDmm1990 all star mvps dont have shit to do with the real mvp. & i know mj won 3, i was using an example. i knw kobe has like 4. but no one cares. its all about league mvps. championships. maybe scoring titles. if you wanna count all star shit, then they really care about appearances. the only time they talk about a.s mvps is when a.s weekend approaches.same with finals mvp, they really juss care about if you won or not. thats why before kobe won another 2. theyd be like "well kobe a 3x champ
